Weapons Man
Life After Civilization
Two islands in the East River of New York, North Brother Island and South Brother Island, not far from the city jail complex on Riker’s Island, are uninhabited wildlife sanctuaries. South Brother has always been uninhabited, except for a short period as a rich man’s rustic cabin (long since burned down). North Brother housed Riverside Hospital from about 1885 to about 1965 — variously an infectious-disease sanatorium, veterans’ temporary housing, and a failed drug-rehab isolation site. Since then, it’s been left to deteriorate.
...DIY Wolverine Claws
We hadn’t heard of Colin Furze (his last name sounds like the plural of “fur”) before, but he’s a manic young Englishman who gets an awful lot of DIY mileage out of his small urban garage, or shed. The word “manic” is overexposed in our adjective-happy culture, but in a moment we’ll let Colin himself show you his project, and you tell us if that’s the right word for him.
...Report of the New Weapons Board, 1944
In 1944, the Army’s Ordnance branch (via the War Production Board) had mobilized the factories of industrial America to previously unimaginable levels of production, and arms flowed out of the factories and the warehouses in an iron river to the war fronts. Not just the American ones, either: vast quantities of armaments went to our British and Commonwealth allies, we fully armed the Free French, and Lend-Lease equipment was shuttled past the U-Boat threat to Russia via Murmansk, and end-run via Iran. While the Soviets also produced prodigial quantities of high-quality armaments themselves, they welcomed the Sherman tanks, White halftracks, Studebaker and GMC trucks and other hardware from America’s smokestack cities, and sent them into combat in the hands of young Russian and Soviet soldiers.
...Gun-Waving Road Rage Maniac: He’s an ATF agent, so it’s OK!
Minnesota State Patrol officers sent a road-rage maniac who brandished a pistol at another driver on his way with a “never mind” and a professional-courtesy fist bump. His name remains secret, because the ATF are secret police after all, and the State Patrol says that Minnesota Statute 13.82 guarantees law-busting Feds privacy that those without such Titles of Nobility don’t deserve.
...Even More VA stuff
Sunday Sturm und Drang
That was forecast in the weather, but is happening with life; instead of the forecast rainstorms, we have glorious, radiant sun.
...Yes, DOD’s still wasting money on “green fuel” stunts
This GAO report is flush with True Belief in the bright sunlit uplands of alternative fuels. Someday, they might even be economical!
...No, SOF Guys are not Psychopaths
Look, some guys will do anything to sell a book. Case in point, from the Telegraph:
...White Privilege
Well, for the rest of his life, Kyle White has a rare privilege: everyone in the Army must render him a hand salute, because that’s the protocol for a Medal of Honor recipient.
