The Truth About Guns

Roberts Defense Supergrade 1911 Review Update
As you can see, I’ve had something of a rear sight issue with the Roberts Defense Supergrade 1911. After fifty rounds of FMJ, the sight moved left. Before the 1911′s next outing I took an allen wrench and screwed the sight back down. (As it’s not my gun I passed on a Loctite solution.) Twenty rounds later the sight worked its way loose again. So I called the company’s customer service number this morning. Vice President Jon Paul picked up the phone and admitted RD’s had some issues with the
ATF Jumped the Gun on “Silencer”
By Dan McCue [Republished with permission from courthousenews.com]
Uncle Sam arbitrarily classified a new device as a firearm silencer without sufficient review or a decent explanation why, a federal judge’s somewhat scathing opinion states. ”In any agency review case, a reviewing court is generally obligated to uphold a reasonable agency decision that is the product of a rational agency process,” U.S. District Judge John Bates wrote Wednesday. “This is not a high bar. But in this case, ATF fails to clear it.” Innovator Enterprises Inc. brought the complaint as the creator of the “Stabilizer Brake,” a device that attaches to the muzzle of a rifle with the intent of substantially reducing the firearm recoil and redirecting noise away from the shooter toward the target, among other things . . .
Typically, such devices, sometimes called “muzzle brakes
Ninth Circuit Upholds San Francisco Gun Storage Law
You’ve heard it before, probably here — the only place a gun belongs is on your hip or locked in a safe. Good advice, that. But the city of San Francisco has elevated a good practice into a law and now, in their ruling in Jackson v. The City of San Francisco, the Ninth Circuit court of appeals has upheld its constitutionality. As the court acknowledged, “This indirectly burdens the ability to use a handgun, because it requires retrieving a weapon from a locked safe or removing a trigger lock.” . . .
But because it burdens only the “manner in which persons may exercise their Second Amendment rights,” the regulation more closely resembles a cont
Quote of the Day: New York Times “Not Clear” Edition
“On Thursday, the day the Georgia bill was passed, a fight broke out in a gray, windowless shack called Milo’s Bar in Marietta, an Atlanta suburb. As the brawl spilled into the parking lot, at least three guns were drawn. Shots were fired, and a bystander was wounded. It is not clear whether the new law would have changed anything. Milo’s already had ‘No Weapons’ signs posted. Anyone there with a gun was already violating existing law as well as the bar’s policy.” – Herbert Buchsbaum in Amid Wave of Pro-Gun Legislation, Georgia Proposes Sweeping Law [via
Daily Digest: Tax & Spend Edition
We’ll start with a story to watch out of Nebraska, that of a 20-year-old University of Nebraska Omaha student who was arrested early Saturday morning on felony charge of having weapons on school property. Campus security called police around 2 a.m. to report that a student had weapons in his dorm room. According to KETV.com, police “confiscated several magazines, ammunition and three rifles.” While that is clearly a violation of both school policy and the law, what makes this a story to watch is how it is handled. He admitted the guns were his, and from all accounts he simply had nowhere else to store them. He was not planning an attack . . .
and I’ve seen multiple articles where in the comments he was described as a nice guy who simply did a stupid thing. One of the comments at the article linked above actually describes him as a “gun nut,” and it’s meant in a
Atlantic Monthly: Gun Suicides Make Guns a Healthcare Issue
The NRA scored another victory last week when they torpedoed the nomination of 36-year-old Mr. Vivek Murthy for the post of Surgeon General. And a good thing too. As we reported back in December, the founder of Doctors for Obama is an unrepentant proponent of civilian disarmament. Murthy expressed his desire for doctors to quiz patients about gun ownership and then keep a record of their reply – creating a de facto gun registry. (Amongst other things.) The left-leaning, gun-hating media isn’t happy that their man Murthy m
BREAKING: Scott Blackwell, President of Marketing & Sales for Remington, Resigns
It was less than two years ago when Freedom Group hired Scott Blackwell as the president of marketing and sales. Since then, things haven’t exactly been going well for Big Green. From the ongoing quality control issues with their firearms to the mixed reviews that the brand new Remington R51 is seeing, Remington’s image could be better. Yesterday afternoon a confidential email from Freedom Group head honcho George Kollitides to his team announced that Scott Blackwell will be moving on and resigning from his position. The timing leaves much to the imagination, especially with the head of marketing being replaced so soon after SHOT Show and the R51 launch. Make the jump for the text of the email . . .
It is with sadness that I announce the departure of Scott Blackwell, President of Remignton Outdoor Company. Since 2006, I have relied on S
Appleseed Gets Guns in a Colorado School. For Real.
Yes, you read that right, the Appleseed Project managed to get actual guns in a Colorado middle school last week for a little history lesson. And then they took the little skulls full of mush on a field trip to a local range for some practical shooting and safety edumacation. As krdo.com reports, “‘Often firearms and schools don’t mix. There’s a big fear there. So we are pushing the safety aspect and hopefully ease some people’s fears,’ said Timothy Baird, with the Craver Middle School.” It’s a radical concept to be sure – teaching kids to respect and use firearms properly. But it’s an idea that’s so crazy it just might work . . .

I like Katniss. Maybe it’s because I’m a shooter. Maybe it’s because I grew up in the woods. Maybe its because my favorite games as a kid were often survival games. This is a very small tribute to a shooter girl who knows her way around the woods and has the skills and moxie to make it. All girls should know how to shoot. Whether its bows or guns, the skills, focus, and other life benefits are invaluable. Katniss represents the confidence shooting can bring Enjoy, and happy shooting
Florida Schools May Soon Be Safe for Pop Tarts
Good news toaster pastry fans! If you live in the Sunshine State, you may soon be able to toss a Pop Tart in your kid’s lunch bag without worrying that the little shaver will bite it into the shape of a 1911 and get himself tossed from school. In a blow for common sense and against mindless zero tolerance policies, Emily Miller reports that Florida’s senate is considering what’s being called the “Pop Tart bill” that expressly allows kids to craft their food or fingers into the shape of a firearm. Drawing pictures of revolvers and rifles will be OK, too. The bill passed the Florida House 98-17 and Governor Rick Scott’s spokesnoid issued this carefully-worded statement: “The governor supports the Second Amendment and our state’s self-defense law and will review any bill that comes to his de
Henry Repeating Arms Donates Serial #1 and Henry from 1865 to NRA Auction
BAYONNE, NJ – Henry Repeating Arms has donated a legendary Henry lever-action rifle from 1865 and serial number one of their new Original Henry rifle line to be auctioned together at the National NRA Foundation Banquet and Auction on Thursday, April 24 in Indianapolis. The auction will benefit The NRA Foundation, America’s leading charitable organization in support of the organizations and programs that ensure the legacy of hunting and the shooting sports. It will kick off the 2014 NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits.
The two-gun set includes the well-worn Model 1860 Henry, serial number 8261 manufactured in 1865, used to reverse-engineer Benjamin Tyler Henry’s classic design and develop the tooling for the new Original Henry Rifle line. Completing the pair is the Original Henry Deluxe Engraved serial number BTH0001, the first Henry produced in nearly 150
The Never-Empty Double Gun…lolwut?
One of my friends recently stumbled across this website, where the proprietors are looking to introduce a unique and interesting new firearm — a double-GLOCK SBR. The patent pending concept is to shove two plastic wunderguns into the same housing so that if one gun runs dry, you still have a second one at your disposal while you reload the first. I suppose there could be some utility there, but all I could think of was . . .
I do have one question, though.<
Norfolk Navy Shooter Disarmed Guard to Get Gun
Perhaps the security at US naval bases could use some beefing up. Despite the fact that the AP reports the Navy held “anti-terrorism and force protection exercises” at its US bases just last month, an as yet un-named civilian gained access to the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, “approached a destroyer docked at the world’s largest naval base late Monday, disarmed a petty officer on watch and fatally shot a sailor” on board the guided missile destroyer USS Mahan. The attacker was then shot dead by security guards . . .
The report at yahoo.com is a little murky as to whether or how the gunman was authorized to

Question of the Day: What’s Your Local Gun Store Like?
My local gun store [LGS ] is Sportsman’s Finest. The Farago-friendly firearms emporium caters to a high-end clientele. It’s not the place to go looking for a bargain or bulk ammo. The staff knows its guns. They can talk you through an excellent selection of new handguns, shotguns and rifles. Bonus! You don’t have to listen to a bunch of OWFG’s decrying Obama and condescending to the fairer sex. What’s your LGS like? Name names and don’t hold back.
Gun Review: CMMG Mk4 3GR
It seems like all of the major firearms manufacturers these days are going after the 3-gun market. And that’s great, since the sport is absolutely booming and the only serious manufacturers making things for 3-gun have been Noveske, Sampson Mfg and Lancer. But this year at SHOT, a handful of big-name manufacturers decided to take a shot at making a 3-gun rifle, and CMMG’s MK4 3GR was among those whose guns looked the nicest . . .
There are three things you want in a 3-gun rifle. First and foremost, it needs to be accurate. Second, it needs to be fast. And third, it needs to look really, really pretty. On paper CMMG’s rifle hits the mark on each and every requirement, but in the field there are some rough spots.
RI State Senator Josh Miller to 2A Supporter: Go F*ck Yourself
Rhode Island’s recent slate of gun control measures – including a bill to ban all semi-automatic firearms – has been condemned to development hell (i.e. they remain in Committee until such time as they don’t). Before the bills stalled, anti-gun control forces rallied at the State House. During one such event, Truth Radio host Dan Bidondi confronted RI State Senator Josh Miller. I’ve included the full clip (not magazine) of the “go f*ck yourself” comment because a little context helps. Truth be told, Bidondi never met a government conspiracy he didn’t like. I mean hate. And he looks more like a bouncer than most bouncers. And to be fair, gun rights guys are joining Josh in the gutter. Still, really?
Richard Mack to Vt. LEOs: Don’t Enforce Burlington Gun Laws
“The head of a nationwide sheriffs coalition is calling on Vermont’s law enforcement officers to defy three controversial gun control measures passed by Burlington voters three weeks ago,” foxnews.com reports. “‘Sheriffs have a constitutional duty to refuse to comply with such ordinances,’ said Richard Mack, president of the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association. ‘We’re seeing sheriffs in New York oppose the Safe Act and Gov. Cuomo. If we have sheriffs in New York doing this, how much more should we have sheriffs doing it in Vermont?’” Plenty? TTAG talked to Mr. Mack about the situation in Connecticut. First a little background on the Vermont kerfuffle . . .

Daily Digest: One Ragged Hole Edition
When you’re headed to get on a plane, carrying a gun in your luggage is never a good idea. But exactly how bad an idea it is can really depend on where you do it. The Orlando Sentinel reviewed arrest policies and 2013 arrest records for 15 airports, and found that if you’re caught with a gun in Orlando, Dallas, Chicago, or Atlanta, you’re pretty much guaranteed to be arrested. However, if it’s in Jacksonville, Phoenix, or Denver, it’s equally likely that you’ll walk free. The difference in outcomes is because arrest and prosecution is up to the local law enforcement agencies or state’s attorneys. At Orlando International, 42 of 47 gun-toters were arrested, while at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood, only 9 of 45 were. In another contrast to OI
