Ice-T: “I Support the Second Amendment, But . . .”

Sat, 02/15/2014 - 16:00

Back in the summer of 2012, TTAG lauded actor Ice-T (a.k.a., Tracey Marrow) for telling Martin Bashir that the right to keep and bear arms was both common sense (personal protection) and a bulwark against tyranny. “The United States is based on guns,” Mr. Marrow told the now-former anti-gun anchor. “It’s not gonna change.” In the recently recorded interview above, T announces “I’m pro Second Amendment but I’m not anti-gun control.” Which is a lot less definitive than Mr. Marrow’s previous pronouncement. As with our NRA chin-wag with the garrulous Glenn Beck, there’s but one question to separate pro-gun from kinda sorta pro-gun: do you favor Constitutional Carry? Well do ya, punk? Sorry. Show biz.

New From Smith & Wesson: Model 69 L-Frame .44 Magnum

Sat, 02/15/2014 - 14:00

I’ve long wanted a Smith & Wesson .44 Magnum, but the considerable size and heft of their marvelous Model 29 and 629 revolvers have been among the factors that have kept me from ever owning one. S&W’s engineers have put the mighty .44 Magnum cartridge on a diet, and shoehorned it into their medium-large L frame. They had to shed one round to make it work, but the 5-round Model 69 should be an ideal wilderness sidearm for hunters and fishermen . . .

After all, this big-bore is powerful, accurate, reliable and weatherproof. It’s also a half-pou

Brady Center Statement on Ninth Circuit Decision on CA Gun Law

Sat, 02/15/2014 - 13:00

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence released the following statement after the 9th Circuit Court struck down “good cause” provisions of California’s concealed carry laws.

Washington, DC—Today in a 2-1 decision, the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco ruled San Diego County violates the Second Amendment in Peruta v. County of San Diego. The following is a statement from Jonathan Lowy, Director, Legal Action Project, Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence: ”Neither history or precedent supports this aberrant, split decision that concocts a dangerous right of people to carry hidden handguns in public places to people whom law enforcement has determined that they have no good cause or qualifications to do so. The parents of Jordan Davis and Trayvon Martin, whose children were killed by licensed concealed-car

BREAKING: Remington Bails on New York for Alabama

Sat, 02/15/2014 - 12:01

“High level sources have informed Yellowhammer News that Remington, one of the world’s largest gun manufacturers, will on Monday join Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley in announcing that they are bringing over 2,000 jobs to Alabama. The company is viewing the move into Alabama as an expansion, but it will likely impact their Ilion, NY plant as well. The New York facility currently employees around 1,200 people. It is expected to stay open, but with a reduced workforce.” Expansion, yes. But Big Green’s move to the Yellowhammer State is nothing if not an escape from New York. As Yellowhammer makes clear . . .

Remington first began considering new locations after the New York legislature passed the Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement (SAFE) Act in response to the tragic shootings in Newtown, Conn. In addition to banning magazines

UPDATE: PepsiCo Prez Behind Gabrielle Giffords’ Civilian Disarmament Gabfest [New Video]

Sat, 02/15/2014 - 10:00

The TTAG tipster who alerted us to PepsiCo’s financial support of Gabrielle Giffords’ 2013 civilian disarmament gabfest entered “pepsico” into the search bar at aspenideas.org. (Fiendishly clever, eh?) Up popped Brad Jakeman, President, Global Beverage Group, PepsiCo, Inc. I’ve screen-capped the Aussie’s bio from the site and inserted it after the jump. The full official bio [click here] reveals that Brad was the marketing maven behind Activision’s gun-intensive Call of Duty video game (“There’s a soldier in all of us”). Our tipster delved deeper and

Quote of the Day: Gun Control Arms Criminals!

Sat, 02/15/2014 - 08:00

“The unfortunate fact is that political rhetoric on gun control is likely increasing firearm purchases by those legally prohibited from owning firearms, too. The only difference is that with the private-sale loophole, these sales go entirely undetected.” – VCU Professor Thomas Baker, Current background checks stop very few firearm purchases [at washingtontimes.com]

Daily Digest: Blonde Is Beautiful Edition

Fri, 02/14/2014 - 21:00

They tell you that registration doesn’t lead to confiscation, but again, it’s a lie. The California Armed Prohibited Person System (APPS) is again under fire for mistakes and incorrect data. The story that’s making the rounds now is that of Michael Merritt, of Bakersfield, who had 18 weapons seized on November 5th for a “felony” from 1970, when he’d plead out a pot possession charge. The officers came with a printout of the charge under code 11910, which is no longer even on the books. Merritt didn’t remember pleading guilty to any felony . . .

saying “The jail time was like five weekends.” His wife told agents to come back with a warrant, and officers told her that they could do that but when they came back, Merritt was going to jail. Merritt said he had to get to work, so he let the agents take the guns. A couple weeks later, on November 21st, a

Cheap Guns in Opa-locka Florida!

Fri, 02/14/2014 - 20:00

There will be a gun turn-in event in early June in Opa-locka, Florida. While these events are commonly labeled with the propaganda term “buyback” the guns were never owned by the people attempting to buy them in the first place. The location for the event hasn’t been announced yet, but the last turn-in event on 25 January, only yielded eleven guns, seen above. This is a semi-annual event, and the numbers were much higher in 2012, with 58 turned in in June of that year, and over 100 snatched up at the December 22nd event, shortly after the Sandy Hook tragedy . . .

I have not seen the incentives to be of

Housekeeping: A Quick Reminder/Update on TTAG’s Comments Policy

Fri, 02/14/2014 - 19:00

TTAG’s posting policy: no flaming the website, its authors or fellow commentators. I’ve noticed an increasing number of flame wars in our comments sections. In some posts, readers ripped TTAG a new one re: our editorial stance and style. In others, they called each other names. These interchanges are unacceptable. Where and when Dan, Nick, Matt or I discover them, they are – and will continue to be – deleted. TTAG’s size makes it difficult to douse all the flames. If you encounter an ad hominem or personal attack please email a link to guntruth@me.com with the word FLAME in caps in the subject field. Meanwhile, I am now officially extending this policy to the subjects of our posts. In other words . . .

PepsiCo Underwrites Gabrielle Giffords’ Civilian Disarmament Gabfest

Fri, 02/14/2014 - 16:00

An eagle-eyed TTAG reader alerted us to this 2013 Gabrielle Gifford gabfest in tony Aspen, Colorado featuring the disarmament doyenne and her ex-astronaut husband Mark Kelley (a.k.a., Americans for Final Responsible Solutions). The not-so-dynamic duo thrilled the assembled throngs with a talk called “Building a Movement to Keep Our Communities Safer.” Here’s the blurb . . .

Instapundit Celebrates Armed African Americans

Fri, 02/14/2014 - 14:00

Who knew Glenn Reynolds was such a telegenic guy? It’s great to see Instapundit taking to interlocution to spread the word about the Second Amendment in general, and African-Americans’ armed struggle for survival and equality in specific. If more African-Americans reclaimed their history of armed self-defense, if they shucked the shackles of civilian disarmament and embraced their natural, civil and Constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms, all American’s RKBA would be safer. We could begin to roll-back the gun control laws in urban enclaves. Watch this space.

Tommy Gun Trade Approved in North Carolina

Fri, 02/14/2014 - 13:00

On February 10th, the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners finally approved the Sheriff’s Department trade of two highly collectible and desirable 1928 Thompson submachine guns for 88 AR-15 type Bushmaster rifles. The vote was 6-1. The trade had engendered some lengthy debates at board meetings over the last month. Because of restrictive gun bans passed in 1934, 1968, and 1986, only a limited number of these vintage full-auto guns are available for sale to collectors. The peculiar market conditions created by federal law have driven up their price from about $1,000 to the range of $30,000 – $50,000 . . .

Evolve’s First Safety Spot Aims at ‘Dumbasses’

Fri, 02/14/2014 - 12:00

As Evolve co-founder Rebecca Bond tells it, her org isn’t about taking sides when it comes to guns. She wants to be “a third voice” in the conversation, one with a message of…safety. And that’s it. As she sees it, safety isn’t about one side or the other. It’s cause everyone – gun grabbers and responsible gun owners alike – have a vested interest in furthering. So Bond’s taking a different tack in getting Evolve’s message out there. Something a little more engaging than the snoozers the NSSF and NRA crank out. Illustrating absurdity by being absurd. Does it work for you?

Maneater of The Boundary Waters Canoe Area

Fri, 02/14/2014 - 11:00

It was in the summer of ’09 when I first heard of the remarkable events surrounding the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) in northeastern Minnesota. I have known the public servant who was involved for several decades, and I can vouch for his integrity and veracity. Out of respect for his privacy, I will not reveal his name. He has since retired from government service and now lives a modest but invigorating lifestyle in the remote reaches of the upper midwest, not far from the shores of Gitche Gumee . . .

A few minor details may have been mangled. Such is the risk in any narrative. All fault belong with the author. I am honored by being allowed to tell the story. I set down these events as they were related to me. As is common in the age of the ascendancy of the progressive media, no mention of them will be found in the local or national journals.

Incendiary Image of the Day: Marines’ “Wield the Shield” Riot Control Training

Fri, 02/14/2014 - 10:00

Yes, yes: United States Marines need to train for riot control. These days, the Few, the Proud are “peacekeepers” keeping the peace in territories prone to civil unrest. Unrest that’s occasionally sparked by the presence of U.S. Marines. Where was I? Oh right. Obviously this riot control training has nothing to do with peacekeeping on U.S. soil. That’s the job of the National Guard. I mean, the police. Unless it’s a big thing or a federal emergency of some sort. Then it’s down to the DHS. FBI? ATF? I can’t keep track. Someone non-military – in command structure if not weapons and tactics. The incendiary part of this video comes at the tail end, as the vid fades out. Is that standard practice for riot control?

New From Mission First Tactical: TORCH Backup Series Lights

Fri, 02/14/2014 - 09:00

Do you have a light rig hanging from your nightstand gun that’s roughly the size of a Pringle’s can? Are you worried that if you hear that dreaded bump in the middle of the night, you’ll have to warm up before attempting to hoist that thing around the house? Is that what’s keeping you up at night? Never fear. Mission First Tactical is out with three slim, reasonably-priced options for your home defense gun. Their TORCH Backup LED lights are available in white, white/red and red/IR for you night vision-equipped operators. MSRP for all three is $59.95 . . .

Quote of the Day: Smile When You Say That Edition

Fri, 02/14/2014 - 08:00

“The opinion of the pro-gun movement seems to be that the guy with the gun is always right, no matter what the facts of the case are; that gun possession makes you a super-citizen with enhanced rights to take life, avoid prosecution, and use lethal force in response to non-lethal force. Somehow, gun ownership increases your judgment and makes you smarter than other citizens.” Executive Director of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Josh Horwitz, The Pugilistic Double Standard of the Pro-Gun Movement [via huffingtonpost.com]
