Quote of the Day: Barak Obama IS . . . The Equalizer

Sat, 01/25/2014 - 08:00

“We need to keep saying to anyone out there who has ever been assaulted, you are not alone. You will never be alone. We have your back. I’ve got your back.” —President Obama before signing a Presidential Memorandum on preventing sexual assault [via facebook.com]

Daily Digest: Clicking Noise Edition

Fri, 01/24/2014 - 21:30

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (when did they stop calling it Border “Patrol?”) arrested a man on Monday afternoon headed into Mexico with “17 high-powered rifle parts,” seven “high-capacity” magazines, and about 2400 rounds of ammunition. The ammunition was packed inside the battery case of a motorized wheelchair, while the gun parts and magazines were secreted throughout the vehicle. The 17 parts were 3 lowers, 5 uppers, 4 stocks, 3 pistol grips, and 2 forearms. The man was a 52-year-old Mexican citizen and lawful permanent resident of the U.S., and was last heard telling police to “call Mr. Holder and he’ll clear this up.”

Illegal “No Weapons” Signs in Alabama Rest Stops

Fri, 01/24/2014 - 20:00

It appears that some bureaucrat in the Yellowhammer State has decided to post the state’s rest stops with signs that are toxic to the Second Amendment, not to mention Alabama law. The signs say “No weapons beyond this point.” According to Skidmark at opencarry.org, rest stops aren’t on the state’s list of prohibited places for possessing weapons. Alabama’s pre-emption law was strengthened in 2013 as part of a package of Second Amendment friendly reforms . . .

The Joy of Shooting From a Helicopter

Fri, 01/24/2014 - 19:00

“Don’t be scared of hanging out of the helicopter to get a better shot, you’ll have a harness.” the helicopter pilot over the blades whipping above us. “You mean this?” I held up a floppy black seatbelt, looking no more secure than the belts in the old Jetta I hoped to blow up. Well, here we goI shrugged my shoulders internally, and locked into go mode . . .

There wasn’t a choice of whether I would accomplish the shot or not, there was simply shooting.

It didn’t matter that this was the second time I’d been up in a helicopter in my entire life, the first being a tour over the Grand Canyon with my mom and dad when I was just a tiny Weiss. It didn’t mat

Zero Tolerance Government Functionary Of The Day: Thomas McLemore

Fri, 01/24/2014 - 17:00

A Suffolk, Virginia high school student has been suspended and is facing permanent expulsion after an empty magazine from a BB gun was found in his backpack at school. In another example of zero-intelligence policies gone amok, the mere possession of harmless (air)gun related accessories on a school campus is treated as though it were actually harmful or threatening . . .

From the hamptonroads.com:

On Monday, a parent contacted high school officials to say his son had seen a student with a gun in a locker room Friday afternoon. After learning of the incident, officials called police and removed the student from class, according to a letter from principal Thomas McLemore Jr.

A search of the student’s bookbag also was conducted, with

OMG! An “Assault Rifle”! In a Case! OMG!

Fri, 01/24/2014 - 16:00

Editor’s note: This article has been updated with additional comments and clarifications from Redondo Beach Police Department spokesman Sgt. Shawn Freeman.” That heads-up from redondo.beach.patch.com, sitting just below the headline Assault Rifle Discovery Leads to Evacuation, tells us we’re in for a classic OMG. The copy does not disappoint. “An assault rifle that caused the evacuation of several homes in South Redondo Beach on Thursday morning belonged to a member of a federal law enforcement agency under the Homeland Security umbrella, according to a spokesman for the Redondo Beach Police Department.” Did I lie? The cops evacuated “several” homes in one of America’s most expensive communities because of an “assault rifle” that was “lo

Gun Hero of the Day: Kansas Republican Vice Chairman Kelly Arnold

Fri, 01/24/2014 - 15:00

The Hyatt hotel in Witchita Kansas is a “gun-free zone.” No gats allowed. Normally, that is. For four days (ending this Sunday), the Sunflower State hotel will “allow” guests to pack heat. That’s thanks to Kansas Republican Vice Chairman Kelly Arnold, who negotiated a suspension of the chain’s no-guns-allowed policy for the duration of the state’s Republican convention. “They wanted our business more than they wanted the signs up,” Arnold told kansas.com. Arnold said the Hyatt’s gun ban was a “make it or break it” issue. “The Second Amendment is a fundamental right. This

Newspaper Chain Planned National Concealed Weapon Database

Fri, 01/24/2014 - 14:00

“A national newspaper chain with nearly 100 publications and 1.6 million readers is considering building “state-by-state databases” on concealed weapons permit holders, according to an internal e-mail,” foxnews.com reports. “The plan, laid out in an email from a top editor at North Carolina-based Civitas Media, could be similar to a controversial project a New York state newspaper carried out in 2012 which included an online map that identified gun owners in two counties by name and address. Civitas’ database project was detailed the plan in a Jan. 19 e-mail to newsrooms in 11 states, including Ohio, Illinois and Pennsylvania.” Confronted by Fox, Civitas downplayed

Hickock45 on the GLOCK 42: “Beats a Hammer”

Fri, 01/24/2014 - 13:00

At 14:38, the GLOCK 42′s slide locks back when shooting Buffalo Bore 90gr. hollow point bullets. So . . . don’t shoot the GLOCK 42 with Buffalo Bore 90gr. hollow point bullets. Or maybe Hickock45 got a bad mag. At 18:30 the Internet’s favorite gun guy compares the .380 GLOCK 42 to my EDC, the 9mm Kahr PM9. The GLOCK wins, in terms of thinness. Which is a bit misleading. When it comes to concealment, it’s the grip that makes all the diff. In terms of sales, GLOCK! Our sources tell us the 42 goes out the door as soon as it comes in. Pallets of the things. TTAG test to follow.

Question of the Day: Is This Film Anti-Gun?

Fri, 01/24/2014 - 12:00

The Sundance Film festival selection committee chose this short film to show to Harvey Weinstein’s friends and family. OK, maybe not Harvey. There are plenty of Tinsel Town show folk who look down their noses at Mr. Miramax, whose violent films are way too popular to be considered great art. Sundance is about cinematic art, not blood and guts. Except, of course, when it is. Same goes for guns. That said, in the right context, say, a film that treats a couple of married Texas gun owners as Diane Arbus-like freaks, guns are cool. But are Tim and Susan freaks? I’m with everydaynodaysoff.com on this one. Aside from poor trigger discipline, they seem like normal gun owners. So is this film making fun of gun owners or not? Are we really that freakish to left-leaning show folk and their liberal BFFs?

Why Outdoor Life Sucks

Fri, 01/24/2014 - 11:00

This website’s reviews don’t pull any punches. Why would we? Firearms are a matter of life or death. Equally, our name is a promise to our readers. A promise to tell the truth about guns that our dead tree competitors do not share. Most of the time you have to read between the lines of the gun mags turgid prose to see their editors’ pathological aversion to biting the advertiser hand that feeds. But not always. Sometimes you happen upon gems like this headline at

New from Guncrafter Industries: The Frag

Fri, 01/24/2014 - 10:00

Guncrafter Industries are best known for their 50GI model. That would be a 1911 that fires a bespoke .50 GI caliber round. Needless to say, the Danish-born Arkansas gunmaker can’t live on strangely-calibered high-end pistols alone. So, continuing the military motif, Mr. Zimmerman has created the Frag. No, it’s not a gun designed to shoot senior officers. Nor is it the nickname for the ill-fated muppet show. The Frag was named for the gun’s checkering, inspired by the MK2 Pineapple “fragmentation” grenade. The $3285 Frag’s matching grips compliment the

Quote of the Day: Making His Case Edition

Fri, 01/24/2014 - 08:00

“Congress didn’t use terms like ‘true buyer’ or ‘true purchaser’ or ‘actual buyer’ because they are not concerned about the ultimate recipients of firearms or what happens to a gun after it leaves the gun store.” – Richard Deitz arguing before the Supreme Court, Supreme Court takes a shot at ‘straw’ purchases [at usatoday.com]

AeroPrecision Begins Selling “Ghost Gun” AR-15 Receivers

Thu, 01/23/2014 - 21:00

There’s an old saying (especially true for gun control advocates) that it’s better for people to think you’re a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. A certain elected official neglected to heed this advice and made what might possibly be the dumbest string of statements since Carolyn McCarthy spoke about the “shoulder thing that goes up.” In response, AeroPrecision has designed and started selling a special “Ghost Gun” edition receiver, with markings such as the notation used for Democrats as the “safe” position, “.30 Caliber Clip” for “fire,&#8221

In response to the issues raised by the recently publicized opinion of the Virginia AG on trusts and machine guns, Arsenal Attorneys of Virginia has drafted a bill (VA HB 1266) for introduction by Delegate David LaRock to correct the language in the statute and make it clear that trusts are among the legal entities allowed to register machine guns, and that any previous registrations are declared valid. Good work by Arsenal and LaRock on getting on this issue quickly, before anyone gets in trouble over ambiguous language. LaRock is a freshman member of the House of Delegates, and is also a supporter of HB 878, which would require CLEOs to sign NFA paperwork within 30 days for eligible applicants. It’s worth noting that six other states (Maryland, South Dakota, Arkansas, Montana, Wisconsin, and Connecticut) have adopted the Uniform Machine Gun Act as law

Classic American Made Rifles by Cooper Firearms of Montana, Inc.

Thu, 01/23/2014 - 20:00

While at the SHOT show, I blogged about the technological bolt-action marvels from German marques such as Mauser, J.P. Sauer, Merkel, and Blaser.  While restrictive European gun laws have pushed the Germans to focus on interchangeable barrels, caliber conversions and platform versatility, high-end American gun makers remain dedicated to old school designs focused on accuracy, workmanship, and value.  So if you are looking for something that is truly “new” when it comes to bolt action hunting rifles, you probably aren’t going to find much from the domestic manufacturers.  But companies such as Cooper Firearms of Montana, Inc.  will provide you with dead-nuts accurate rifles with drop-dead gorgeous looks . . .

Founded in 1990, Cooper Firearms of Montana, Inc is a relatively new pla
