The Truth About Guns

Gun Hero of the Day: Arapahoe County Sheriff Deputy James Englert
NRA-ILA Presser:
Charlotte, NC --(Ammoland.com)- Back in March, we reported on Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper (D) signing into law the most sweeping anti-gun legislation in the history of the Centennial State, despite overwhelming opposition to the legislation. The new law bans magazines with a capacity of greater than 15 rounds, imposes a “gun tax” for a background check when purchasing a firearm, and criminalizes the private transfer of a firearm, among other things. The anti-gu
Military Arms Channel: Repaired Springfield XD-S Trigger Sucks
Springfield snatched defeat from the jaws of victory with their XDS-9. The Croatian company’s compact 9mm striker-fired handgun was the GLOCK everybody wants but Gaston’s mob don’t make. (Yet?) The XDS-9 sold like ballistic hotcakes—until Springfield recalled it. According to Springfield’s website, “One of our customers reported that his XD-S™ had fired multiple shots unexpectedly and returned this pistol to us for our inspection. Our gunsmith recreated this situation in a test pistol by modifying the components of that pistol and was able to recreate the customer’s claim. Through extensive evaluation and testing of this pistol, we developed an improved engagement among critical components of the pistol to prevent the remote possibility of this unintentional discharge.” Huh. That’s not exactly what MAC has to say on the matter. Anyway, not to
Gear Review: Eberlestock Gunslinger II
Without a doubt, the worst part of a 3-gun competition is hauling all of your crap around the range. Not only do you have to move all three guns around, but you also need to carry enough food to keep them running, all of your spare gear, a set of tools, maybe a spare sweatshirt… the weight adds up fast. And keeping all of that stuff organized is an even bigger issue. Sure there are plenty of 3-gun bags out there from Safariland and Uncle Mike’s and even Voodoo Tactical, but they’re uncomfortable and prioritize room for the guns over room for the gear. And what if you wanted to take that same bag hunting, using it to carry your stuff while hiking into the wilderness? The existing options aren’t very good. What if there was a bag that offered you more room for your gear, and that you could use not only on the range or in the hunt, but could also double as a gear bag that you could check on airplane rides? The Eberle
The Specialists
There’s a door in the middle of the trendy SoHo neighborhood of New York City. It bears no logos, no signs, and no company name above the frame – only the numbers for the street address. The company logo hangs nearby, but the generic design offers no information about what actually goes on inside. It’s so inconspicuous that you’d walk right past it if you didn’t know to look for it, but if you take a few seconds to notice the high security door and the multiple cameras pointed at it you might realize that there’s something worth seeing on the other side. Unbeknownst to the thousands of people that walk by it every day, this is the home of one of the biggest firearms collections in New York City and the people who know the most about them. This is the home of The Specialists . . .
New York City has an interesting problem
Quote of the Day: Peace on Earth Good Will to Men Edition
“There are so many American men who love their guns; so many organizations such as the NRA who enrich themselves from fanning the fears of ‘besieged’ white males and goosing up their ‘manhood’; so many industries and retail shops that make money selling firearms; and a national history of white Europeans conquering the ‘heathen Indians’ and keeping black slaves in check with plantation artilleries.” Mark Karlin, Megyn Kelly Lights the Powder Keg for a FOX Gun Guy to Shoot a Black Santa [via truth-out.org]
Question of the Day: What Are You Shooting for Christmas? (And I Don’t Mean Santa)
At the risk of alienating readers still angry about the religious furor touched off by my Random Thoughts About Fags and Gun Nuts post, I reckon that sending lead down range is an excellent way to celebrate the birth of the Christ child. Failing that, I’m sure that plenty of TTAG’s Armed Intelligentsia have taken – or will take – full advantage of the holiday break to shrug off cubicle-itis for some quality time with your firearms-fancying friends. So . . . what’dja shoot? What’dja buy? What’dja get for Christmas, gun-related?
Good News/Bad News About Ammo Prices. First The Good News…
Economics is supposed to make such clean, perfect sense. Heaven knows I spent enough time believing that back in college, studying how purely hypothetical ‘demand’ lines cross with purely speculative ‘supply’ lines to determine a perfect market price for any commodity. After keeping my eye on ammo prices for the last several years, however, I’m pretty much ready to dismiss everything that Professor Paranthap Basu taught me in Microecon 101 as total bullshit. (And don’t even get me started about airline prices) . . .
Like I said, there’s good news and bad news about ammo prices. The good news? .45 ACP FMJ only costs twice as much as the lowliest .22 Long Rifle. The bad news? The lowliest .22 Long Rifle costs half as much as .45 ACP FMJ.
Steel-cased .45 ACP can be purchased by the metr
Encomium for Kalashnikov
As a kid growing up in the pre-Perestroika ‘80s, I used to think, “The only good Commie is a dead Commie.” Today, that sounds harsher than it did then, but something about one of my state’s U.S. Congressmen and 268 others getting blown to bits by a Soviet SU-15 fighter jet – along with hundreds if not thousands of the USSR’s ICBMs aimed squarely at the US of A – rendered such ham-fisted maxims far more socially acceptable back when we all just wanted our MTV. But hey, we grow up, we become educated and experienced, and regardless of whether or not our feelings about such things change, we learn to enter into discourse in more subtle and nuanced (some would say “more civilized”) ways than youthful, jingoistic references to “dead Commies” . . .
In my case, yesterday’s news of one particul
Daily Digest: Christmas Eve Video Spectacular
Instead of trickling them out over several days, I’m going to do a one-day roundup of YouTube gun guys Christmas videos, and since the Digest doesn’t drop ’til late, I’m going to do them tonight instead of late tomorrow. To start us off, Jerry Miculek Deagles some tree ornaments. Sadly, he didn’t slow-mo this one, but hey, it’s Jerry, and a gun.
Next up, mattv2099 makes some holiday almond roca with a special ingredient. I’m sure you can guess what it is.
This one you may have already seen, but it’s pretty good, so it’s worth the rerun. Silencerco gets all fest
OMG! Women Carrying Guns in Ohio! OMG!
Click here for a wide-eyed news report on women carrying guns in Cincinnati. Fox19 investigates! “Cases like Brittany Stykes – a young pregnant mother who was gunned down in her car on a Brown County road. Her one-year-old daughter was also shot but miraculously survived. Another case is Alisha Waters – a 31-year-old woman tracked down and shot by her estranged husband and paralyzed. She is currently recovering. The recent headlines are terrifying. That’s why so many more women are arming themselves.” The script makes the pistol-packing women seem like scared little rabbits. The video, however, shows skilled, determined women getting their bal
Cook County Sheriff Wants to Dig Up Dirt on CCW Applicants
By John Boch
Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart would be a petty, tyrannical dictator if given half a chance. Fortunately for the good people of Illinois, our government doesn’t allow this – and Tom Dart isn’t a happy lil’ wanna-be authoritarian. What is all the hubbub about? Dart wants to use Illinois’ LEADS system - basically “Google” for law enforcement – to search the background of every applicant for an Illinois concealed carry license for *anything* in their background – and we mean anything – and use that information to file an objection to issuing the permit . . .
And he’s not just worried about current Cook County residents. No, he wants to r
BREAKING: GLOCK 42 Revealed?
An eagle-eyed TTAG reader spotted this image of the new GLOCK 42 .380 single stack semi-automatic posted by “Squid” at boomershooter.com‘s forum. Looks like the real deal to me. Does this signal the second (third? fourth?) incarnation of the .380 craze? Hey, don’t rule it out. Our man shootingthebul410 has plenty of good things to say about the round’s defensive capabilities. Still . . . why oh why not a compact 9mm? Make the jump for another image. [h/t BP]
Gun Tweet of the Day: Anti-Gun Surgeon General Nominee Dr. Vivek Murthy Edition
Philip Van Cleave is a tireless campaigner for gun rights. The President of the Virginia Citizens Defense League who doesn’t miss a trick. Van Cleave recently read an article at washingtontimes.com article about Obama’s Surgeon General nominee: Dr. Vivek Murthy. All the Presidents’ Men have tipped the Harvard Medical School faculty member and Affordable Care Act booster for the post despite/because of his affiliation to Doctors for America (formerly Doctors for Obama). DFA is financially sustained by the Center for American Progress, the self-prof
Postal Service Loses M1 Carbine, Declares It A ‘Prohibited’ Item
“Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds…”
You and I can’t ship firearms through the United States Postal Service, but FFLs ship long guns in the mail all the time because it’s usually cheaper than going FedEx or UPS. Sometimes the difference in shipping costs is big enough that I can save money by paying my FFL an extra $20 to run a rifle through his Bound Book and handle the USPS shipping for me. Either way, when you ship something through the USPS, you expect it to be delivered intact and on time. When you pay for insurance and your shipment disappears in transit, you expect the post office to pay the claim. When you’re an FFL and your collectible WWII-era M1 Carbine vanishes in transit and the USPS denies your insurance claim, it’s time to get on the phone and tell The Truth About Guns. Which is exactly what a Texas gun dealer did . . .

Buckeye Firearms Foundation: 38% of Ohio Teachers Don’t Think School Security Measures Will Stop an Active Shooter
Ohio --(Ammoland.com)- Saturday, December 14, 2013 marked the one year anniversary since a coward murdered his mother, stole her gun and her car, then drove to Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, where he brutally murdered his mother, six school employees and 20 innocent children before committing suicide. Buckeye Firearms Foundation recently surveyed school employees to find out what has changed in the year since the Newtown killings . . .
As we have already reported, our survey found that nearly two dozen Ohio schools have authorized individuals such as teachers, administrators and parents to carry firearms in schools. There has been enormous progress toward protecting our kids from mass killings at schools, but not
Gear Review: MEK OWB Patterend Kydex Pancake Holster
I’m a recent convert to the “outside the waistband” style of holster for daily carry. It’s just more comfortable to me, and gives me a quicker draw when I need it. MEK Holsters is a new holster manufacturer in Texas that makes some pretty interesting looking holsters, and they sent me one for my Glock 19 to test and see if I like it. And at first glance, everything is all unicorns and rainbows . . .

Irresponsible Gun Owners of the Day: Unidentified Fresno County, CA Shooters
And always be sure of what’s behind your target. A Fresno County sheriff’s deputy is lucky to have avoided serious injury last weekend. He was responding to a report of shots fired in a semi-rural area near Squaw Creek when a bullet hit him in the leg. Luckily for him (and for our amazingly-stupid IGOTD) the bullet struck the EDC knife in the officer’s pocket . . .
The lucky cop is only out a pocket knife and a pair of trousers and has a gnarly bruise, but several people were detained for investigation after a police helicopter spotted them a distance downhill with guns and ammunition. Make the jump over to The Truth About Knives for the rest of the story, as well as other documented instances of knives saving lives by blocking bullets.
CT Gun Owners Force Investigation into IGOTD Officer Juan Santiago
If you’re new to these parts IGOTD stands for Irresponsible Gun Owner of The Day. TTAG’s IGOTD series provides examples of careless gun handling to remind readers to follow basic gun safety rules. Bridgeport Police Department Officer Juan Santiago earned that honor when he “borrowed” a gun from a friend (?) at Bagel King and triggered a negligent discharge. Many of the commentators underneath our post bitched about the fact that Santiago would get a slap on the wrist, whereas law-abiding gun owners would be arrested, prosecuted, fined and lose their gun rights. Permanently. Meanwhile, out in the real world, Connecticut gun owners prote
Al Sharpton Chicago Gun Control Meeting Becomes Anti-Machine Rally
Well this is a surprise. There seems to be some serious cracks in the Democratically-controlled pro-gun control Chicago machine. And a willingness to take responsibility for its perpetuation. As in vote differently. Is the age of miracles not past? Equally, the crowd didn’t seem to have an appetite for a discussion about gun control. Maybe they’ve come to the conclusion that it doesn’t work . . . Click here for Breitbart’s report on the meeting, which somehow didn’t get much play in Chicago’s mainstream press.
