The Truth About Guns

Question of the Day: Modify A Glock?
I really like the factory-issue sights on my new Glock 19. They are not, however, night sights. So I’m swapping them out for TRUGLO Bright Sights. OMG I’d forgotten just how graunchy and heavy a standard-issue Glock trigger can be. It smoothes out after a couple of thousand rounds but why wait? I’ve ordered a Ghost Rocket 3.5 Trigger Connector. It takes some of the safety out of Glock’s Safe Action trigger but my trigger discipline is up to snuff and it reduced group size by 30 percent in my Glock 30SF. Enlarged slide lock? Hello? It’s a lock not a release. Grip tape? Gen4 fixed that. Wilson Combat
Gun Review: Walther PPK/S .22
Dr. No was the first James Bond movie but the sixth book. In it Bond (James Bond) begrudgingly exchanges his .25 ACP Beretta for a Walther PPK chambered in the much more powerful .32 ACP, described as “a brick through a plate glass window.” [Click here for the clip.] The PPK was available in .380 as well, but that wasn’t a popular or well-known caliber in Europe. Although the Mossad are still partial to .22 for close range wet work, one assumes most people would buy a PPK chambered in the relatively small caliber for newbie instruction, target shooting and plinking. If so, that’s not a terrible idea . . .
New for 2013, the Walther PPK/S in .22 long rifle is very much like the centerfire PPK in almost every way, from controls to weight and size to machining, fit, and finish. It’s actually somewhat rare to find the .22 version of
Ted Cruz to Trayvon Martin’s Mom: Stand Your Ground Had Nothing to Do With It
Texas Senator Ted Cruz’s sympathetic voice is fairly convincing, but his lawyerly argument is better. That said, Cruz can be a bit dull in these settings. I’d like to see him in a cut-and-thrust debate with Hillary Clinton or one of her Democratic competitors regarding gun control. Yes. Yes I would.
And the Prize for First Pre-SHOT Show Marketing Mailing Goes To…G Outdoors!
We’re still more than 60 days out from SHOT, but G Outdoors isn’t letting any grass grow under their feet. They’re out with a new line of hide-in-plain-site handgun cases and they want to make sure everyone headed to Las Vegas knows about it. What’s the harm in a little discreet deceit? Their new gear will let you tuck a Taurus G2 in your “tissue box,” hide an HK P30 in with your “hazard markers” or file an FNS-40 in your “first aid kit.” They say the early bird gets the worm. Does that mean I’ll be stopping by booth 306? Only time will tell….
Quote of the Day: I Couldn’t Do It Edition
“I have no previous firearms training. I have no idea what carrying a gun entails. I don’t have the mindset to shoot and kill; I admit this about myself, which is why I have never had any incentive to become familiar with guns or permits for those weapons. So could I really say that I could protect the children that I’m watching over at any and all costs if I am unwilling to carry a gun in the classroom or on my person to protect them?” – Brittany Jordan, Guns in Schools: Not the Answer [via collegian.com]
Daily Digest: Autotune Halloween Edition
We’ve previously noted the heavy support Terry McAuliffe is getting from Bloomberg in the Virginia gubernatorial race, to the tune of nearly $2 million. Now comes news that Bloomberg’s super PAC is dumping another $1 million into the final week of the race for Attorney General in a “saturation-level television buy” in support of Democrat Mark Herring over Republican Mark Obenshain (right above). Turnout for this election is expected to be low overall, so that means it’s easier to move the needle. And for governor, that needle is close. A
Solving the Problem of Child Violence
By Don Natale
Are instances of child violence on the rise? To tell the truth, I don’t really know, but I’ll go out on a limb and say it sometimes seems like it. There are good reasons why this could be true. Regardless, child violence is a problem worth solving whether the rates are increasing, decreasing, or static. To really start solving this problem, whatever its size, we MUST address the incentives and motivations for kids killing each other. Bullying is an obvious motivation. Bullying is a common feature of any population of the human animal. For kids, bullying used to be somewhat escape-able . . .
A child could seek refuge at home. A parent could move the child to another school. Now the bullying follows the child persistently wherever they go. It comes into their lives through their social media and cell phones. Frankly, I can’t imagine having that
SoCal Student to Parents: Lock Up My Guns
Republished from neontommy.com
Dear Parents,
There’s not really any easy way to say this, but we need to talk. No, I didn’t get someone pregnant and no, I didn’t fail a class. We actually need to talk about your behavior, not mine. Did you see the news this past week about the school shootings in Massachusetts and Nevada? It’s awful isn’t it? For the life of me, I can’t understand how a 12 year old, or a 14 year old, could get to the point of shooting their teacher and classmates. It’s unfathomable to me, but this isn’t a letter about being sad or feeling cornered by the world. I need to talk to you about what we do with our guns . . .
Question of the Day: Is Anti-Semitism Good for Gun Rights?
“MAIG [Mayors Against Illegal Guns] provided significant financial support for Sen. John Morse and Sen. Angela Giron, recalled in September, including a $350,000 donation from Bloomberg himself,” dailycaller.com reports. A fact that recall organizers used to their advantage. It’s deja vu all over again with the recall effort against Senator Evie Hudak. And now in the Virginia gubernatorial race. The
Texas CHL Data Shows What Happens in the Wild West
By Dean Weingarten
Texas is one of the few states that actually tracks crimes committed by concealed carry weapon permit holders. In Texas, the permit is called a concealed handgun license, or CHL. The Texas Department of Public Safety has filed annual reports of the convictions of CHL holders from 1996 through 2011. They wait two years to obtain final conviction information and complle all the data before publishing their totals. As you might expect, the number of CHL holders who commit murder or manslaughter is remarkably low. According to the DPS reports, the number of murder and manslaughter convictions for CHL holders has totaled 30 over the 16 years they’ve compiled the numbers . . .
DPS also reports on the number of active CHL holders for each year. Thos
NBC Touts Study Showing Gun-Related Fatalities in Children is On the Rise, Forgets to Fact-Check
Ever since the school shooting in Newtown, one of the preferred tactics for gun control advocates has been to argue that guns kill lots of children every year. It’s one hell of a propaganda claim, since there’s nothing quite like the bodies of dead children to empower the Civilian Disarmament Industrial Complex, override the analytical abilities of the voting public and try to sneak through a little gun control legislation. We’ve seen this tactic before from the New York Times and we thoroughly debunked it. Now it looks like a medical student and his advisor have taken it upon themselves to pick up the mantle and try to advance the party line a little further. And once again, they’ve used some remarkably flawed data to back
Tactical’s Cracking
There are two extremes in the self-defense gun world: paper punchers and tactical operators. Paper punchers are newbies with no real interest in learning the art of armed self-defense. If they face a lethal threat they’ll aim the gun at the bad guy and, if needs be, pull the trigger. To prepare for that eventuality they visit the range every once in a while—to make sure the gun works and they can hit what they’re aiming at. Maybe. I’m OK with that. Why wouldn’t I be? The majority of [non-hunti
Motorcycle AR-15 ND Update: There Shouldn’t Have Been a Round in the Chamber
“Police policy was not followed leading up to a school assembly where a student pulled the trigger of an assault rifle mounted on a police motorcycle [not shown] and three children were injured by bullet fragments, authorities said.” Ya think? “Department rules state the rifle chamber should be empty when it is mounted, Police Chief Miles Pruitt said in a statement. ‘The preliminary investigation has shown that the established safeguards and procedures were not followed.” [In an email statement to TTAG, reader and LEO Hasdrubal points out that "It's still irresponsible that they left a gun mounted to a motorcycle and walked away from it, in my opinion, chambered or not. The lack of ability to completely secure a long gun is why my department does not allow motors officers to carry a rifle on duty."] Regrets? Pruitt has a f
Bloomberg, Other Gun Control Advocates Pouring Millions Into VA Gov Race
Michael Bloomberg’s personal political action committee, the Independence USA PAC, is spending over $2 million in Virginia to run this ad (comments are disabled as usual, as the only “valid” opinion is the one in the video and God forbid anyone should express a different point of view). The ad is an attempt by Bloomberg to support the Dems’ candidate for Governor, Terry McAuliffe, by painting GOPer Ken Cuccinelli as a gun-toting lunatic who wants to give criminals firearms. The ad is pure propaganda, attempting to visually tie the three most notorious “mass shooting” perpetrators in recent years to the existence of the “gun show loophole.” Just one problem: none of the shooters pictured in the ad actually used that “loophole…”
Gun Review: Smith & Wesson Model 12 .38 Special
By Steve Collins
I picked up my Smith & Wesson Model 12 .38 Special in 1999 after reading an article on a customized one that looked really cool. I knew I wanted to have one made up for me. Like most such plans, it fell by the wayside in the face of family, work and finances. I kept it around though, because I liked the way it handled and I shot it a lot. I qualified for my Kentucky CCW license with it and even attended an Advanced Defensive Handgun course with John Farnam of Defense Training International. I was the only revolver shooter in the class. The 2” medium frame guns seem to have fallen from favor in the tidal wave of small, featherweight revolvers and compact semi-autos that are the flavor of the month for concealed carry these days. But the model 12, and other guns like it, offer some advantages over the lightweight pocket guns
Big Black Bear Falls to 300 AAC Blackout
Barnes is busy creating some new projectiles for the 300 AAC Blackout, specifically for the hunting crowd. They already have a 110 grain version that I use and love, but they’re in the process of creating a 120 grain version as well. There’s also rumors (well, not really rumors since I’m holding one) that there’s a subsonic 300 BLK round on the way that will fully expand upon impact, unlike the previous iterations. And what better way to test them than by taking down a black bear in New Mexico! Who said that 300 BLK isn’t good enough for big game, anyway? Make the jump for the blurb from AAC’s blog as well as the bear in all its glory . . .
OMG! Handguns! On a College Campus! OMG!
“Two loaded handguns and some ammunition were seized from a UMass Dartmouth student Tuesday,” southcoasttoday.com reports. “The student, William Deforte, 32, of Clinton, Pa., [above] identified himself as a part-time police officer in Pennsylvania, according to campus police, who were alerted at 8:30 a.m. by several students who told police Deforte showed them the weapons.” So a bunch of students ratted-out a part-time cop (?) who showed them his guns. Nice guns—I mean firearms—too . . .
Deforte said the guns were service weapons, found by campus police during a search of his apartment and car while he was in class. Also seized was a quantity of u
Quote of the Day: Punch Drunk Edition
“Having a gun isn’t enough. Women who fear for their life don’t need a gun — they need to go to their local police department, they need to go a family member, they need to go to the domestic violence shelter in their area where they have some type of protection.” – Christy Martin, Domestic Violence Survivor Explains Why Guns Don’t Actually Protect Women: ‘I Was Shot With My Own Gun’ [at thinkprogress.org]
Moms Demand Action: All Shootings Due to “Lax Gun Laws”
“Given our country’s lax gun laws, gun violence can and does happen everywhere. And it has a huge impact on all of us: One in three Americans have been affected. Take action today to make your community safer.” That’s Moms Demand Action for Civilian Disarmament in America’s immediate reaction to a shooting spree in Dallas last night that claimed five lives. Before there’s any indication how Charles Brownlow got a hold of a firearm that he used to shoot three relatives and two other people. The [uncensored] comments underneath the post are equally instructive. “We hav
