The Shotmaxx Wearable Shot Timer—Gear Review

Wed, 06/18/2014 - 10:37

Shot timers aren’t the sexiest addition to your shooting gear. Most are bulky, a bit boxy even. If you’re not a serious competitor, using a timer might even seem a bit pretentious, like you think there is something that needs to be timed. Yet a timer is one piece of gear that marks you as a serious shooter. A good timer implies that you’re serious about competition and serious about improving your speed. And now, thanks to the Shotmaxx from Double-Alpha Academy (DAA), the shot timer has gotten more functional, more stylish and a whole lot smaller.

Heckler & Koch is about to begin shipping the VP9, its latest striker fired pistol, and the reports coming in could not be any more positive. From the adjustable grip panels to the trigger, the VP9 is taking a familiar platform and making some serious improvements and doing it at a competitive price.

Shield CQS—A Good Red Dot Sight for SBRs

Mon, 06/16/2014 - 19:16

With the ever-growing popularity of the modern sporting rifle platform (I call it a platform because there seem to be an infinite number of configurations), there is a growing trend toward carbines and short barreled rifles (SBR’s). Since these are used for fast, dynamic, short-range work, non-magnified electronic dot sights and backup iron sights work well on these rifles. Smaller and lighter has become the trend, which is good as long as the sights are functional and reliable.

Supreme Court Rules on “Straw Man” Gun Sales Case

Mon, 06/16/2014 - 15:36

The U.S. Supreme Court today ruled that the government can enforce the Straw Sale rule even when the person it is being bought for is lawfully allowed to own a gun. Several different Federal Circuit courts had previously ruled on both sides of this issue, prompting the Supreme Court to hear the case. The Supreme Court, is a five-to-four decision, adopted a narrow interpretation of the law, saying the "actual transferee/buyer" must acknowledge that he intends to resell the gun when he buys it, even if the eventual owner is legally entitled to own a gun.

Tin Foil Hats – Holy Reality Batman!

Sun, 06/15/2014 - 14:34

Have you ever been driving along on the highway and realized that everyone going slower than is an old lady and the everyone going faster than you is a maniac? It is the same thing with what you believe, at least when it comes to “conspiracy theories.” Anyone who believes less than you believe is “asleep” and everyone who believes more than you believe is a nut.

Shoot First! – Then Call 911 (911 Call VIDEO)

Sun, 06/15/2014 - 13:20

There is a famous saying: “The police are only minutes away when seconds count.” That happened recently to a family in the Tampa Florida area when they were the victims of a home invasion. As you can hear on the video below of the actual 911 call, the caller first gets voicemail when he calls 911, with a recording to call 911. Then the people who just robbed them return to the house, when he finally shoots them, ending the threat.

Browning Citori 725 Feather—Gun Review

Sat, 06/14/2014 - 20:41

The primary design idea behind the Browning Citori 725 Feather is, you guessed it, light weight. My evaluation sample was a 12-gauge Feather model with 28-inch barrels. It weighs in at 6 pounds, 9 ounces. If you compare to the equivalent Field (non-Feather) model, the 28-inch barrel model weighs just about a full pound more at 7 pounds, 8 ounces. That adds up over a day in the field. Imagine taping a can of lima beans to the Citori 725 Feather, and now you’re carrying a standard weight over-and-under.

The Firefield Agility—A Versatile, Budget-Conscious 870 Sight

Fri, 06/13/2014 - 16:19

Looking for an inexpensive way to top off a Remington 870? Firefield has a versatile option. The Agility 1X30 Dot Sight for 870 shotguns is a straightforward design that works exactly as advertised and comes in way below the price point of some dedicated shotgun optics.

I started with it in a Remington 870 tactical in 12-gauge, a short shotgun that I use the most on the range and for home defense. The Firefield is perfect for both. It comes with a built-in saddle mount, so all you can place it on is the Remington 870, which it was designed to fit. I did not like the limitation imposed by that design, but it does make for a simple and straightforward mounting solution.

The Winchester SXP Shotgun—a Good Place to Start? (REVIEW)

Fri, 06/13/2014 - 13:31

We’re going to get a bit philosophical with this one. Winchester, one of the nineteenth century’s most iconic rifle makers, a company that revolutionized shotguns at the turn of the twentieth century, is still making guns. It's alive and well, and making a play for a bigger part of the market. If you are looking for a new scatter-gun, and you’re working on a budget, Winchester has a gun for you.

Kahr’s Super-Slim Single-Stacks: CT40 and CT45 (REVIEW)

Thu, 06/12/2014 - 13:07

Kahr’s latest line of pistols is something to see. The company’s taken all of the features of its premium pistols and shaved off the extras to leave behind an exceptionally functional pistol that sells for much less. It’s producing guns that can compete with anything on the market, and at a price point […]

Prepping 101: Solar Generator Basics – Harbor Freight Kit Review

Tue, 06/10/2014 - 23:18

It boggles my mind when someone proudly exclaims that they are free from worry should a disaster strike, because “I’ve got a generator!” That’s great for a hurricane or a blizzard, but what are you going to do if there is a real collapse and your fuel runs out? Did you in fact […]

The XStat™ from RevMedx — Tiny Sponges that Can Save Lives

Tue, 06/10/2014 - 10:38

Inspiration for important innovations can come from many things. In this case, it was expandable kitchen sponges sold at William Sonoma. RevMedx has taken that idea and turned it into the XStat™, a device that can save the lives of soldiers on the battlefield who have gun and shrapnel wounds. The device injects small compressed sponges into the wound, using a device like a syringe. The tiny sponges expand rapidly as they soak up blood, filling the wound cavity and instantly creating a barrier against further blood loss. The sponges are treated with an anti-hemorrhagic substance that contributes to the effectiveness of the device.

Send to Kindle    After what feels like an absurdly long wait, Beretta is shipping the ARX 100 in 5.56. This is the civilian version of a battle rifle that’s currently in service in Italy and a handful of other countries. The rifle combines the operational familiarity of both the AR-15 platform and the AK […]

Shocking Blueprint for the Collapse & New World Order – UK Daily Telegraph 2009

Sun, 06/08/2014 - 21:09

One of the most interesting aspects of writing editorial about the potential collapse of America is in seeing the comments come in from everyday liberty loving Americans… who get really, really angry. We all have what is called a “normalcy bias,” where we just don’t want to accept that bad things could happen, […]

Remington R1 Carry: the EDC 1911—New Gun Review

Sun, 06/08/2014 - 09:11

When Remington announced its intentions to begin remaking 1911s in the centennial year of the venerable platform, no one was terribly surprised. 2011 was arguably a better year for 1911s than the original model year. Everyone was making them. The surge brought new energy to the single action, and shooters were willing to test out the cocked-and-locked philosophy. Yet most of the new pistols on the market were oddly incomplete. If you wanted to carry one for defensive purposes, you needed to make some minor changes. The one stand-out for me, the one anniversary year 1911 that felt completely thought out, is the Remington R1 Carry.

Savage Axis II XP, Big Bang for a Few Bucks

Sat, 06/07/2014 - 07:00

Let’s say you’ve just gotten a call from a friend who wants to go hunting with you, tomorrow, and he doesn’t have a rifle. He really wants to go. And you know you’ll be able to put him on a deer, or a hog, or something, but you don’t have an extra rifle set up and ready to go. There’s a big-box retailer right around the corner. What would you suggest?

There’s a lot to presume about the hypothetical above. Let’s pretend the friend knows his ass from his elbow and is aware of basic firearms safety and function. We can assume he can get a license and that you will be hunting, not poaching. What you need is a rifle that’s turnkey. You need a gun, one in a common caliber, and an optic (preferably one that’s already attached and sighted in).

You need a Savage Axis II, the complete package.

Montana Rifle’s MMR: Tactical Precision, Traditional Feel

Fri, 06/06/2014 - 16:16

Tactical is a term that seems to get attached to way too many products these days and truthfully it’s beginning to get a little tiresome. I find it refreshing then when a rifle like the MMR hits the market with all the right features one might find in a “tactical” rifle but with a slightly different approach. There isn’t an excessive amount of rail space, fancy camo finishes or a catchy name taken from ancient weaponry. The MMR stands for Montana Marksman Rifle, simple and to the point just like the rifle itself.

Getting Tricky with Sticky Holsters – New Product Review

Thu, 06/05/2014 - 20:38

A few weeks back, I walked into my gunsmith’s shop to have him do some work on a rifle. I knew he was partial to his Springfield XDS, and I’ve never seen him without a gun on him, ever, but I didn’t expect to see the pistol just stuck in his waistband. In all fairness, his shop is in his basement, and he was practicing home carry, which we highly endorse, but the pistol tucked into his waistband—without a holster—that just seemed so…relaxed.

I’m a holster snob. I’ve got my favorite makers, favorite styles, preferred materials. I’ll try anything out, but when it comes down to concealed carry, I’m not going to do experiments on behalf of any product review. So know that I take this seriously. When I first saw a Sticky Holster, I wasn’t terribly enthusiastic. It seemed too relaxed for my taste. I’m not one to tuck a pistol in my waistband, even at home, and that’s what the Sticky Holster is—a holster you tuck into your waistband.

Inside Ruger’s New Mayodan North Carolina Plant

Wed, 06/04/2014 - 14:45

Send to Kindle  Ruger knows the rimfire market. There’s a lot to say about Ruger’s latest addition to the rimfire line. They run off of the 10/22 magazine and are tack drivers.  The rifles are lightweight, indestructible and inexpensive. That last part is hard to wrap your head around, considering that they’re made in the US. But […]

PWS’s New Modern Musket

Tue, 06/03/2014 - 16:47

Modern Musket Primary Weapon Systems has a new take what’s become a bit of a meme, The Modern Musket.  Their latest direct impingement ARs are branded under the confrontational monicker, and they are priced lower than the rest of the PWS line, which should make them more appealing to those looking for a […]
