Our Pick for the One Light To Reach For in an Emergency

Wed, 01/14/2015 - 17:25

Which light would you depend on when you need illumination the most.  The expedient answer is simple–the one nearest to you.  But beyond that functional but unhelpful answer, what would you say?

Ready Range Target System

Wed, 01/14/2015 - 17:12

Ready Range is the brainchild of Neely Burks. From the outside, it looks like a flattened box. It unfolds in seconds to become a three-dimensional set of multiple bullseyes with added supports for clays, pop cans and others reactive targets.

Prolong the Lifespan of Your Handwarmers

Mon, 01/12/2015 - 09:21

I know I’ve wasted several pairs of these! You go out, use your hand warmers for a hunt, then toss them in the trash when you’re finished. Although they aren’t too expensive, it adds up quick when you’re consistently hunting cold temps. Check out this neat trick to preserve them which enables you to use them for several hunts!

Origin 12 semi-auto shotgun.

Mon, 01/12/2015 - 09:14

The Origin 12 shotgun first came to my attention two years ago at SHOT show Media Day event. I fired a couple of magazines through the AK-like contraption, noted that it worked despite frigid weather and blowing sand but wasn’t particularly taken by it. It was just another functional gun with a slightly unusual look: every part that could be skeletonized was to save weight. Looking at it later the same week on the trade show floor, I appreciated the thought that went in the design, but I found features like quick take-down capability irrelevant for my use. I did stay in touch with Fostech Outdoors, but mostly because I liked the people.

Review: Resco Patriot and Manus Watches, Made by a Navy SEAL

Tue, 01/06/2015 - 20:10

I am a connoisseur of watches and love all those high dollar watch brands. The major premium heirloom quality watch brands like Tag Heuer, Breitling, Omega, Ebel, Rolex, and other notable brands have a legacy of time measuring quality which have proven to not only retain their value but in some cases even appreciate in value longer term for owners. Most watch fanatics would admit these brands are worth the price.

One to Watch: Emerson Sheepdog Prototype

Tue, 01/06/2015 - 19:43

Emerson Knives is a company that I love to watch. I love their beefy knives. I love the use of simple and solid materials (G10 and 154CM). I love to see their willingness to experiment. They can do that because they occupy an ideal space in the market–big enough to have the manufacturing capacity to do a lot of different things and small enough to not worry about selling 25,000 knives in Wal-Mart (their collaboration partner, KAI USA does that for them). They also happen to have an incredibly devoted following, another reason they can experiment so much.

Why You Should Consider a Custom Knife as an EDC Alternative

Tue, 01/06/2015 - 19:40

In this series on EDC alternatives, I have made the case for all sorts of different kinds of tools that you can carry instead of a regular production folder. Most of the time these suggestions have been less expensive, or if not outright cheaper, not much more expensive.

Review: Esbit Alcohol Stove & Trekking Cookset

Mon, 01/05/2015 - 19:48

There is certainly not a shortage of cook sets on the market for the camper and hiker, but I was intrigued with the Esbit Alcohol and Fuel Tab stove and Trekking Cook Set.  At just under 15 oz this set delivers everything you could need on the trail or in camp for very little cash and weight.

Sideguard holsters

Mon, 01/05/2015 - 19:35

When I was new to carrying guns, I was more concerned with concealment, comfort and the ability to put the holster on an off quickly. Low price and universal fit were also prized. As a result, I tried Uncle Mike’s pocket holsters and Fobus paddle holsters. I soon discovered that such solutions work only for stationary users. The moment I tried to run with a revolver in my pocket, it slipped the rather loose nylon holster and and flew out of my pocket on a high trajectory… fortunately landing in soft grass instead of the asphalt!

.300 BLK Proves Mettle on Whitetails

Mon, 01/05/2015 - 18:46

Honestly you never know the true performance of a particular gun and ammo combination until it is tested in the field under real hunting conditions. So, in the back of my mind there was a bit of nervous anxious anticipation when I took my first shot at a white-tailed deer with my Smith and Wesson MP15T with a .300 BLK upper unit.

Hacking a Kleen Kanteen with a Sawyer Water Filter

I Wrapped my iPhone 6 Plus In Glock Grip Tape, and It Is Glorious

Fri, 01/02/2015 - 10:00

I recently picked up the Springfield Armory XD Mod.2 after reviewing it, and despite the amount of grip already included on the gun, I added a small bit of GT5000 grip tape where the left thumb sits in a thumbs-forward grip. So I had quite a bit of the stuff left over, and I’ve since found two great non-pistol applications for it. I’ll write about the first project a bit later, but today I want to show off what I did last night. Behold the Glockified iPhone 6 Plus.

Senator Rand Paul’s Plan to Prevent Another 9-11

Tue, 12/30/2014 - 12:16

We all know that common sense is assuredly UN-common in government. That’s why it gives me a modicum of hope to hear sensible things being said by someone who may be able to do something about them – and who may just have a good chance to become President of the United States of America.
