Venison: Waste Not, Want Not

Thu, 10/09/2014 - 15:50

How much meat does your deer yield? You’d be surprised how much meat is actually wasted. Below we’ve listed some recipes grouped by cut of meat from Hunter Angler Gardener Cook.

Review: Montie Gear Y-Shot Slingshot

Wed, 10/08/2014 - 12:01

As a kid, I was singly responsible for launching a metric ton of steel ball bearings around our yard to dispatch junk birds, rodents, and cans. For me, that was time well spent with one of the wrist rocket slingshots from Daisy or Crossman. I am still into slingshots and still am dispatching junk birds, criters, and cans with slingshots, but I wanted something a bit more upscale and high class than what the kid down the street is using to knock out street lights… I wanted billet.

EDC Recommendations 2014: $1000 and Under

Wed, 10/08/2014 - 11:26

Now that we have left the realm of rational spending (which, frankly, we left at least two price brackets ago), things get a little insane. This is not quite price-is-no-object gear, but it is the absolute pinnacle of the production form. If you are careful you can score some pretty sweet stuff in this price range, stuff that will serve you for a lifetime.

Handguns for Deer

Mon, 10/06/2014 - 11:38

Handgun hunting for deer is the ultimate challenge for a firearms deer hunte. Is it the extreme test of hunter stalking and shooting skills, so you are looking for a new deer hunting experience to reinvigorate your hunting, then give handgun hunting a go.

Crosman MAR177 upper for AR-15

Mon, 10/06/2014 - 11:32

When I first saw a .177 upper for AR-15, I laughed. It wasn’t suitable for defensive, therefore wasn’t interesting to me. The next time I saw it, I thought it was a cute idea for entirely too much money, $600 retail. And then I grew up and realized that I have more defensive guns and ammunition than time for training, and that’s when the pre-charged airgun upper suddenly made sense.

A Look at Next Level Training’s SIRT 107 “M&P” Laser Training Pistol

Thu, 10/02/2014 - 16:49

Next Level Training’s SIRT (Shot Indicating Resetting Trigger) Laser Training pistol has become a hit with firearms instructors and shooters since it’s introduction in 2011. The original SIRT replicates the design of the Glock 17. The resetting trigger gives shooters a laser training tool that doesn’t require racking the slide after every shot the way a laser insert does. The pistol’s two laser system includes one laser that lights up during trigger take up and a second that activates to display the actual “point of impact” as the trigger breaks.

Ebola: Could You Get It from Fido?

Thu, 10/02/2014 - 14:01

Despite the fact that as an Austinite I’m a few short hours away from Dallas, TX, I’ve managed to remain pretty calm and optimistic about the whole Ebola thing. The virus seems to have been contained in Nigeria and Senegal, and if those two countries can do it, then the US can do it, wherever it crops up.

EDC Recommendations 2014: Price No Object

Wed, 10/01/2014 - 18:33

This installment is purely for fun, as with no upper limit, so you can get whatever you want. And let me be clear–if you want to spend an insane amount of money on a knife and a flashlight, there are many makers willing to accommodate your financial imprudence. The other thing to bear in mind is that while some knives can be investments, it’s too hard to predict which ones. You’d be better off putting money into real investments–mutual funds, CDs, and the like. But they aren’t fun to carry.

Review: Black Rain Ordnance BRO-PG13 .308 Rifle

Wed, 10/01/2014 - 18:07

I knew that my love fest with Black Rain Ordnance products would continue as I opened up my latest BRO rifle on my FFL dealer’s table. What a gorgeous custom rifle, and the kicker is you can walk into any gun dealer and buy this same rifle shown here – no custom gunsmith and no waiting for months.

The First Rule of Firearms Instruction – Don’t Shoot Your Students

Wed, 10/01/2014 - 17:25

If the first rule of Fight Club is “Don’t talk about Fight Club,” the first rule of firearms instruction is “Don’t shoot your students.”

Why the Winchester 9mm NATO bulk ammo may be bad for your pistol

Wed, 10/01/2014 - 15:17

After the recent ammo drought it’s good to see relatively cheap bulk pistol ammo returning to store shelves. But, ammo buyers need to be aware that not everything is as it seems and not all ammo is created equal.

Review: Burris AR-15 3X Magnifier

Mon, 09/29/2014 - 20:22

One of the hottest optical trends over the last couple years has been the introduction of a swing-over 2x, 3x, or 4x+ magnifier for non-magnified 1x optics such as the various red dots and holographic sights that now adorn our defensive, sporting, and hunting AR-15 rifles. The concept originated by EOTech is simple: clamp on a swing-over magnifier behind your red dot and you now have the ability to flip back and forth quickly between non-magnified and magnified target acquisition for the best of both worlds. The concept has been proven an extremely handy setup during the ongoing wars were our troops are consistently engaging near and mid-distance targets.

Baiting Tips For Hogs

Mon, 09/29/2014 - 19:58

Baiting and using lures are one of the best ways to take wild pigs. Their natural food sources include: acorns, snakes, salamanders, grubs, crawfish, fresh plant roots, etc. Dry corn works great, but it can take a while for them to find it. Sour mash can help them find it quicker, but I do suggest putting it out with fresh dry corn also. The sour mash drives the hogs crazy and they will devour the corn!

EDC Recommendations 2014: $600 and Under

Mon, 09/29/2014 - 19:21

The Sebenza has forced me to break that smooth curve of doubling the price range in each article, because it basically sets the tone for the market there: are a lot of $300 knives (i.e. the Sebenza’s price), but not as many $250.  As such, the price range here is $600 for the pair.

The Missing Measurement in Gun Specification

Sun, 09/28/2014 - 18:20

My first three rifles, an SKS, A Mini14 and an AR15A2 had fixed stocks. I gave little thought to my preferred length because there was little I could do about the stock dimensions. Later, as I tried telescoping stocks, I discovered that I almost always used them fully collapsed. For years, I thought that it meant a preference for short length of pull (distance from buttstock to trigger).

Getting Started with a Crossbow

Thu, 09/25/2014 - 18:47

Deer hunting with archery gear was something I always wanted to try. I did, too, for several years until I lost my hand grip coming down a wet tree stand ladder and pulled my shoulder doing a lunge grab just before falling. After that, I could not pull my bow all the way back without considerable pain.

Deer Hunters: Beat The October Lull!

Thu, 09/25/2014 - 18:45

Each year bowhunters become more educated about the facts surrounding the dreaded October lull. It’s the time of year when deer sightings decline and hunters are tempted to believe that whitetail are capable of a full-fledged disappearing act. Thankfully, we are becoming aware of what really happens to our missing bucks during the October lull and the mysteries are being dismantled. Much to the disbelief of some, whitetails don’t have access to Harry Potter’s magic cloak. That buck on your hit list hasn’t disappeared, he’s just relocated.

Early Season Goose Hunting

Thu, 09/25/2014 - 18:44

Hunting resident Canada geese during the early season can be feast or famine. The weather is warm, and geese often settle into established feeding and roosting patterns. Many birds also remain in tight-knit family groups at this time of year, making juvenile birds difficult to lure away from wary adults. Despite these challenges, great opportunities exist for goose hunters who are willing to do the work necessary to put themselves on the X.

TriStar Viper left-hand shotgun

Thu, 09/25/2014 - 18:42

I am friends with many left-handed shooters. As a result, I am keenly interested in ambidextrous or left-handed arms for their use. Seeing the lightweight Tristar G2 shotgun at a trade show, I got very curious and obtained one for testing. The fit and finish were excellent and, at 7 pounded loaded, the weight quite a bit lighter and better balanced than what I expected from a full-sized 12 gauge with a 28 inch barrel.
