There’s no denying that getting permission to hunt quality land can be as challenging as going after wild game itself. But much like when stalking an animal, if you use smart strategies as you plan your approach, you are going to increase the odds of getting that permission letter signed. I thought it could be helpful to share a few tips and tricks I have learned from friends, family, other hunters, and old-fashioned trial-and-error that might help you get access to a few new farms this year. After all, hunting season is just a few weeks away for most.

Assessing the status of hunting stands is an annual ritual at deer camp. We usually reserve a full day or two at our camp each year to work on stands. It is amazing what the impact of sitting out in the sun and weather for nearly a year can make on wooden and steel hunting stands.

Telling you the Paramilitary 2 is awesome is akin to telling you that the Suzuki Hayabusa is fast.  The single word descriptor doesn’t really capture the entirety of what you are dealing with–the Paramilitary 2 (PM2) is something of a phenomenon.  It is, bizarrely in this world of gear bounty, hard to find, amazingly capable, and cheap.  As the market for $200, $300, and even $400 production knives grows, the PM2 remains intermittently in stock everywhere.  There is a reason.  It is awesome.

The point of this series is to give you an alternative to the current folders on the market.  The first article discussed the merits of a fixed blade EDC.  The second reviewed the benefits of a traditional folder as an EDC.  In this article I am going to delve into the murky waters of hard-to-find out of production knives.  Be warned–some of these knives will cost you a pretty penny and are virtually impossible to track down.

I looked down at the calendar and realized that the start of Maryland’s bowhunting season is just a few weeks away. The wait is almost over! It went faster than I thought. Almost too fast. But with about a month to go, there are a few things we can do now to get ready for opening weekend.

Under many circumstances, hunting from a treestand can be the most effective method of all, especially in areas with relatively high game populations, dense cover, and terrain that’s too flat to permit much glassing. Successful treestand hunting, however, involves much more than simply buying a stand, randomly picking out a tree and climbing up. It’s a chess game, a dynamic process of moves and counter-moves; the hunter selects a tree for his stand, gives it a go and then, based on his observations and changes in prevailing conditions, might choose to move the stand to increase his chances at a high-percentage shot.

This week’s KnifeTests.com destruction test features the Glock 81 Field Knife, which retails for about $30 online. The knife is a little over 11 in. total, with 6.5 in. taken up by the blade. On Amazon, one user remarked, “Like all things Glock, it is well made.”

Since my first time using LaserLyte’s laser training system I have been hooked on it for in-home training. The idea is pretty simple; clear the gun and drop in a laser trainer cartridge. The firing pin will now hit the momentary activation switch on the back of the laser trainer round and a laser shoots a laser dot on your target. Usually the process does not even require the gun to be disassembled. When I travel with a gun, I usually pack a laser trainer kit to give me something to do in the hotel room instead of just watching TV, and I am building my skills in the process.
