Bullpup .50 BMG: St. George Arms Leader 50A1

Tue, 08/19/2014 - 17:58

Last year, I mentioned the Leader 50 bullpup rifle in Managing Recoil article. It’s a ten-shot semi-auto bullpup of light weight and unusually low recoil. Firing it last summer, I was surprised how close the kick was to a .223 carbine. Excellent balance also allowed unsupported firing. Annular gas piston gave smooth cycling without sideways torque.

Must-See: Doraville, GA’s Insane SWAT Team Video

Tue, 08/19/2014 - 09:14

I’m not trying to get on a Ferguson thing, here, but this is so awesome that it deserves to be shared more widely. Via Radley Balko at the Washington Post, comes the following slice of 2014 American insanity:

Balko says:

The images at the beginning and end are from The Punisher, the fictional character described by Wikipedia as ‘a vigilante who employs murder, kidnapping, extortion, coercion, threats of violence, and torture in his war on crime.’ The audio is the song ‘Die Motherf—-r Die’ by Dope.

Doraville is a town of about 8,500 people, in the northeast suburbs of Atlanta. It last saw a murder in 2009 (at least through the end of 2012, the last year for which I can find statistics).

I laughed. I cried.

Review: Quake Industries Stag Seat

Mon, 08/18/2014 - 19:17

It may seem odd to call a camp seat an All-Terrain product, but then the Quake Industries All-Terrain Seat comes as close to anything I can imagine. As a connoisseur of hunting camp seating equipment, I have found the Quake Stag a superior version of the common seat to have around the camp, in the hunting blind, shooting house, duck blind, or just blinded up out in the woods behind some natural downfall or brush.

Review: Ultimate State-of-the-Art AR-15 Build

Mon, 08/18/2014 - 19:17

I love to try new products, new ideas, and new manufacturers. In this build I attempted to showcase a number of those new ideas from the front to the back of the rifle. The result is one uniquely forward looking rifle which looks awesome and shoots great.

Review: Rock River’s LAR-8 Elite Operator

Mon, 08/18/2014 - 18:54

I am an unabashed fan of the AR rifle platform. I wasn’t always though. I grew up on lever actions and bolt guns as a hunter. I killed my first white-tailed deer with a Winchester Model 94 in 30-30 I bought from J. C. Penney in Columbia, Mo for a whopping $66 new in the box back in college in 1971. Wish I still had that rifle.

Review: Ruger Red Label Shotgun

Mon, 08/18/2014 - 18:47

A few years ago, Ruger gave me a scare. Just about the time I had scraped together enough cash to pick up a Ruger Red Label shotgun, they suddenly discontinued the line. There was little information from Ruger as to the reasons for the discontinuation, other than a nonspecific answer of “due to re-tooling and production capacity.” Luckily, the affordable Ruger Red Label is back again, this time loaded with additional features and accessories for the avid hunter and sporting clay shooter.

Hiding in Plain Sight: Furniture to Hide Your Guns

Fri, 08/15/2014 - 17:07

Guns are great; they just are. They’re valuable tools in a pinch, and they need to be there when you need them. In your home, it’s great to keep one or more guns handy – and it’s wise to keep them out of sight. Lately, I’ve been seeing a lot more furniture that functions and looks like “regular” furniture while doubling as a hiding place for firearms.

Filming Your Lure: Underwater Camera Line Attachment

Fri, 08/15/2014 - 15:51

Available in stores November 2014, this WaterWolf underwater camera can be attached to your fishing line, and allow you to film what happens under water. It can go deeper than 100 meters and record for 4 hours.

Thinking this would be an expensive camera to lose if the line broke. Check out the video below.

You Kill it, They’ll Grill it

Fri, 08/15/2014 - 15:41

Let’s say you go on a successful hunting or fishing trip away from home and you haven’t got the facilities, time, or gumption to cook your critter(s). Well, your hotel, lodge, or a local restaurant just might scorch up your game and feed it to you.

Review: AB Arms SBR T-Grip Forward Grip

Thu, 08/14/2014 - 18:30

Recently I stumbled across a new company that’s not so new. AB Arms has actually been making AR-15 related parts for a number of years for some of the top major companies in the US and even internationally; two of those companies are rumored to be Mossberg and LWRC. AB Arms delivers bolts, extractors, ejectors, handguards, and accessories, such as this T-Grip, to high volume contracts via a mix of exclusive strategic partnership manufacturing agreements and in-house manufacturing capabilities. The result is that this company you probably have not heard of is handling the parts production of some significant players in the firearms industry.

Finland Afoot: the Moose Hunt of a Lifetime

Thu, 08/14/2014 - 18:24

Any moose hunt is an exciting and challenging endeavor for an outdoorsman whose heart and soul lives the sport. Indeed, such a hunt is a true once in a lifetime adventure. An overused cliché for sure, but it applies none-the-less. In my case the shoe was a perfect fit. It was to be my first ever moose hunt.

These guys get to take a go at the SSK industries .950 JDJ, the biggest centerfire rifle ever made. Only 3 of these rifles have ever been made.

This was the first and the lightest model weighing in at 50 lbs. The bullets shot in the video below cost about $40 each.

Crankbaits 101

Wed, 08/13/2014 - 19:32

I don’t know another lure with more size, shape and color variations than the crankbait. Crankbaits crowd the long walls of tackle shops everywhere, depicting shapes, sizes and hues that can cause chaos and downright confusion when you’re trying to make a simple selection for the tackle box. What size do I use? How come they have different lips on them? What’s with all the colors?

Short Course on Seward Salmon

Wed, 08/13/2014 - 19:30

If you have never been to Alaska, then get out your bucket list and immediately put an entry in under “place to go this year.” All of Alaska is a postcard state, but few of the destinations are as panoramic as the southern coastal town of Seward direct down Highway 9 (also known as the Seward Highway) from Anchorage.

Promoting Fire Discipline

Wed, 08/13/2014 - 19:27

When magazine rifles became preeminent in military use at the end of 19th century, mechanical magazine cutoffs were all the rage. You can see it in the photo above, a metal wedge designed to allow single loading into the chamber while keeping a full magazine in reserve. You can’t blame the armies for wanting those devices, as they were designed to reduce several problems at once:

Video: LR223 is New British Almost-Semi-Automatic AR15

Wed, 08/13/2014 - 14:25

A new gun may allow Brits to own an “almost” AR rifle, and it’s based on such a simple idea that other gun makers who have tried to work around the U.K.’s ban on semi-automatic rifles have got to be asking themselves, “Why didn’t I think of that?”

Eek! A Gun! Let’s all Freak Out!

Wed, 08/13/2014 - 12:34

On August 12, 2014, a young girl discovered a pistol in the sand of a New York beach. Her hunt for sea shells on Coney Island turned up a pistol, described as a 9mm. There was apparently a round in the chamber of the handgun, which was later taken away by police. At least one report claims that it was “cut into pieces to be made inoperable.”

KnifeTests.com Gerber LMF ASEK Destruction Test

Tue, 08/12/2014 - 21:50

This week’s KnifeTests.com destruction features the Gerber LMF ASEK, which retails for about $80-$100 online. It’s a fairly tactical-looking fixed blade, and Gerber dubs it a “rugged, versatile survival tool.” The blade is half-serrated with two holes for a spear.
