Video: Divers Encounter This Massive Alien-like Fish near Portugal

Thu, 10/08/2015 - 14:41

At first glance, this sunfish looked more like an alien than anything you'd find in the ocean. Photographer Miguel Pereira found the extraordinary animal off the coast of Portugal during a recent expedition and was able to videotape it. Sunfish, also known as Mola mola, are the heaviest bony fish in the world and can weigh up to 2,000 pounds. Although this specific sunfish may appear huge, it is actually just above average size. Larger sunfish can grow up to 10 feet in length and 14 feet across the fins. Perhaps the most interesting thing about sunfish other than their size and odd shape is...

Thu, 10/08/2015 - 14:09

A man in Polk County, Florida died late last month after contracting Vibrio vulnificus, more commonly known as "flesh-eating bacteria," during a recent fishing trip. The family of Richard Corley say that the 57-year-old father of one was a devoted outdoorsman and avid angler. They believe that Corley contracted the bacteria while fishing after accidentally cutting his leg on September 27, which later became infected. The angler died three days later. "It just spread so quickly," the victim's brother, Brian Corely told Read more »

Thu, 10/08/2015 - 12:45

The last thing you expect to go wrong in the backcountry is a bridge collapse, but that's exactly what happened to these french hikers. Four french tourists were hiking through the backcountry of New Zealand when they came to a bridge crossing over a river. What should have been an easy way over the water turned into a nightmare when the bridge collapsed under their feet. According the the video description, the bridge had a ten person capacity so the cause of failure is unknown at this point. Luckily the hikers walked away from the 30 foot fall with nothing more than waterlogged...

Idaho Hunter Wakes up to Black Bear Chewing His Hair

Thu, 10/08/2015 - 12:42

What is the worst thing you can wake up to while camping in Idaho's vast and untamed wilderness? Well, a bear chewing on your hair may be one of the most frightening. Stephen Vouch, 29, jolted awake on early Friday morning to find a black bear standing over him. According to Idaho Fish and Game, the animal was doing a bit more than just giving Vouch a tug on his hair---it started biting him, leaving lacerations on the top and side of his head. "According to Vouch, he awoke about 2:00am to the sensation...

A Newport, Kentucky pet store owner had a close call with one of his own animals after a 20-foot, 125-pound python latched on and started constricting him on Monday morning. According to the police, Terry Wilkens of Captive Born Reptiles was teaching a customer how to care for pythons when the snake coiled itself around his head, neck, and torso. "Yesterday is normally feeding day. So he thought it was feeding day and he reached out and grabbed my elbow and that’s where the fun began,” Wilkins told Read more »

Video: Yellowfin Tuna Can’t Stop Shaking

Thu, 10/08/2015 - 09:31

Pound for pound, many anglers agree that yellowfin tuna are probably the best fighters of all big game tunas. Even out of the water, these fish can put up a formidable fight---especially when you're least expecting it. This angler was holding up his most recent catch for a photo when the fish decided it was the perfect opportunity to make its escape. It also has a secret weapon. Tuna have interlocking vertebrae which allows them stiffen their spines and vibrate intensely. In the water, this allows them to swim at super-high speeds, but it also serves a backup function of escaping from...

15 Photos of Expertly Hidden Hunters

Wed, 10/07/2015 - 16:06

How good is your camouflage game? Now with a little bit of lighting and some photo editing, just about anybody can look like an expert on camouflage. That doesn't take away from the fact that some hunters take camo extremely seriously. Camouflage is one of the basic tools of hunting and has been in continuous use since mankind first chased after game. Humans are not the most naturally gifted at blending into our backgrounds, but we do have one distinct advantage: our big, creative brains. It didn't take long for ancestors to figure out that just we can make our own camouflage, and we've...

Video: Enraged Bull Elephant Impales Young Buffalo

Wed, 10/07/2015 - 14:41

Elephants may be among the smartest animals on the planet, but they can still be prone to fits of violence. This video taken in South Africa's Kruger National Park shows a bull elephant running down and stabbing a young buffalo with its tusks. We're not sure exactly what the other animal did to provoke it, but the elephant wasn't having any of it. It's hard to argue against several tons of muscle, especially when it comes armed with spear-like tusks. Younger male elephants are especially known for their destructive tendencies, and often require the presence of older males or large females...

Video: Baby Weasels Follow Around Their Mom

Wed, 10/07/2015 - 14:26

This video filmed in Park City, Utah shows us just how much fun weasels have. After climbing and playing in the grass the baby weasels had to be dragged off by their mother, who was presumably frightened by the person taking the video. We are actually surprised that the babies and mother stuck around long enough for this video to be taken, but we are glad they did. https://youtu.be/FOw0f8OO-_s...

Photos: What a 1-ounce Trigger Looks Like

Wed, 10/07/2015 - 14:07

This is a Steyr Manlicker Match Free Pistol, and it's probably not a gun that many of you have seen before. Besides its odd shape, the Steyr FP1's claim to fame is it's absurdly light trigger weight, which can actually be adjusted to just 15 grams. At that point, pulling the trigger is practically optional---something as light as a gust of wind is enough to fire this pistol. "Setting a cocked free pistol down too hard, bumping it, or brushing the trigger can set it off," wrote Reddit user Scioso, who recently posted pictures of the rare competition pistol to Imgur. Scioso...

Video: Electric Eel Shocks Alligator to Death

Wed, 10/07/2015 - 13:58

A Brazilian fisherman was reeling in an electric eel which is interesting on its own, but the alligator who tried to steal his catch was truly shocking. After the eel was brought to shore a small alligator, or more specifically a caiman, tried to steal the catch for itself. Things went really wrong for the caiman the second it bit into the electric eel. The eel delivered a powerful electric shock to the caiman which caused to start seizing and convulsing. It appears as though the eel survived, but since the caiman was no longer moving at the end of the video we have to assume that it was...

Study: Wolves Have Taken Over the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone

Wed, 10/07/2015 - 13:10

Nearly three decades after the Chernobyl nuclear incident in Ukraine, wildlife have returned to reclaim the 1,000-square mile Exclusion Zone near the Belarus border. In place of the people who once inhabited the zone, wild boar, elk, and deer now wander through the empty buildings of Pripyat and neighboring villages. Wolves especially seem to have come to dominate the landscape. According to researchers studying animal activity in the zone, wolf populations are about seven times higher than nearby nature preserves, and now the predators are undeniably on the top of the food chain. “It...

“Zombie” Virus Kills Hundreds of Deer across Washington, Idaho

Wed, 10/07/2015 - 10:41

Wildlife officials have confirmed an outbreak of bluetongue virus in white-tailed deer in both Idaho and Washington. The latest outbreak is believed to have killed hundreds of deer in at least eight eastern Washington counties, and in the Clearwater region of Idaho. According to biologists from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), the high number of deaths and severity of the outbreak may be caused by ongoing drought conditions. In Idaho alone, officials estimate that up to 1,000 deer have succumbed to the virus. Sometimes called the "deer zombie" virus due to its...

Video: Angler Catches Redfish On a Barbie Poll Using a Chicken Nugget as Bait

Wed, 10/07/2015 - 10:39

Some anglers want to challenge themselves by using unusual equipment. Using a chicken nugget attached to a children's barbie pole certainly qualifies as unusual. The angler in this video used a Walmart barbie fishing pole and a chicken nugget as bait to catch a nice sized redfish. That's a lot more challenging than using expensive specialized equipment and based on the angler's reaction, it might be a lot more fun. Let's call this one the happy meal catch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdG3X-s0bMA...

Video: Are These 20 Hunting Stereotypes Justified?

Wed, 10/07/2015 - 09:26

Do you fit into one of these stereotypes? Dude Perfect may be better known for their improbable basketball shooting skills, but there's little doubt that they're into hunting as well---as evidenced by the compound bows they break out in nearly every episode. In the below video, Coby and the gang poke fun at about 20 different hunting stereotypes. Some are classics, and some are a little bit more outlandish, but all provide good satire of the hunting culture we know and love. Have you ever seen any of these in the...

How to Determine How Much Antlers Are Worth

Tue, 10/06/2015 - 20:30

Have you ever wondered what your shed antlers are worth? In most cases, the smooth, white antlers you have laying around the house are probably worth more in sentimental value than out in the market. Due to the abundance of deer in North America, antlers can be had for relatively cheap. That is great news for craftsmen who work with antlers to create art, custom knives, furniture, and so on. It is not great news if you want to sell some of your sheds. Most antlers are worth just a few bucks per pound, and unless you have a trophy-sized rack, don't expect to rake in the big bucks anytime...

PSE Archery Unveils “Revolutionary” Super-light Carbon Bow

Tue, 10/06/2015 - 15:12

PSE Archery recently caused a stir when it unveiled the Carbon Air, a compound bow that the company claims is the lightest high-performance carbon bow in the world. Weighing just 3.2 pounds, the monocoque-designed Carbon Air is built in one monolithic carbon fiber shell, which PSE says gives the bow immense strength while still remaining lightweight. "PSE first introduced a carbon bow back in 1996, but today there are improved methods of manufacturing carbon that allow products to be lighter, more rigid and almost indestructible. That’s why PSE decided it was time to rewrite the book on...

Last-minute Rifle Hunting Essentials

Tue, 10/06/2015 - 14:33

The pitch black has faded out to shades of gray and gold as light creeps in to brighten opening morning of hunting season. The snap of a twig cuts through the chirping of birds and you catch a hint of movement in the corner of your eye. The fog that hid the corner of the food plot parts to allow the heavy-beamed, mature buck to enter. You take a moment to enjoy the scene, and then slowly pull your rifle to your shoulder.// <![CDATA[ var axel = Math.random() + ''; var a = axel * 10000000000000; document.write('Read more »

Vermont Woman Takes State Archery Record Moose

Tue, 10/06/2015 - 13:19

Officials with Vermont Fish and Wildlife announced on Tuesday that the state has a new archery record moose, and it belongs to a hunter from Fairfax. On October 2, Tammy Miller bagged a gigantic bull moose while hunting with a compound bow in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom. The massive animal weighed 931 pounds and boasted an impressive antler spread of 53 and 3/4 inches. Miller's behemoth bull easily unseated the current archery record, a 919-pound animal taken by Kevin Rice last year. Miller, who was hunting with her husband Eric, called it the experience of a lifetime. “Five...
