Canadian Man Captures Wolf Attacking Dog on Camera

Wed, 09/30/2015 - 11:55

It's difficult to conceptualize just how large wolves are until you watch a video like this. The uploader of the video, Chris Street, works as a fishing guide in northern Saskatchewan. He's quite used to seeing bears around his camp. However, this year wolves started showing up around the lodge. Chris first spotted the wolf the in the video below through a window of their fishing lodge. Soon after they saw the wolf, Chris and the lodge manager, Dan, ran outside to scare it off. Dan's dog, Trigger, followed the two and pursued the wolf. It was then that the wolf turned around and...

Video: Man Gored by Bull Elk for Disrupting Harem, May Face Charges

Wed, 09/30/2015 - 09:55

Never, ever get between a bull elk and its harem---or you may very well find a set of pointy antlers coming your way. Officials said a man was bored by a bull elk in Estes Park, Colorado after he moved through an elk herd to take pictures. Yes, you read that correctly. Instead of taking pictures from a safe distance, the tourist decided to mingle with the cows and photograph them up close. That did not go well with the resident bull elk. "The elk, he wasn’t doing anything wrong. The man was very blatantly in his space," Marci Bowden, who witnessed the encounter, told Read more »

7 Ways to Cook Your Forgotten Freezer Venison

Wed, 09/30/2015 - 07:51

There are two kinds of people in the world: the people who find a long forgotten package of venison in their freezer and groan about how impossible it is to cook, and the people who gleefully announce that they're having stew tonight. Old, deep-frozen venison can be difficult to use. When stored correctly, though, venison can last for two to three years in the freezer. Thawed venison should be cooked immediately, or at least preserved in one of the methods listed below. Ideally, meat should be preserved when fresh, but frozen meat could also do in a pinch. Personally, we prefer slow...

Tue, 09/29/2015 - 15:31

A number of attacks on dogs north of Winnipeg, Manitoba have some experts worried that the region's gray wolves are moving into residential areas due to declining deer numbers. According to the Winnipeg Free Press, biologists suspect that the wolves moved into the area after deer populations in their traditional hunting grounds further east dropped. The predators initially arrived to take advantage of the healthy deer herds near Winnipeg. Over...

31 Amazing World War Two Pictures from the Finnish Wartime Photograph Archive

Tue, 09/29/2015 - 12:16

A little over two years ago, an amazing pictorial resource was opened to historians of both the academic and armchair varieties: the Finnish Wartime Photograph Archive. Contained within the site are more than 160,000 scanned photographs from 1939 to 1945, offering a fascinating glimpse (from a Finnish perspective) into one of the most destructive periods of human history. The Finns took part in no less than three separate conflicts during the Second World War. First, they fought the Soviets from 1939 to 1940 in the Winter War. Following...

Tue, 09/29/2015 - 11:52

A woman in a flea market in Homestead, Florida got quite the shock after a live eight-foot Burmese python slithered out of a stack of used clothes she was browsing. According to the Miami Herald, the Miami-Dade Fire-Rescue snake unit arrived at the market on Sunday to capture the large snake, which they believe was looking for a place to digest its latest meal. Burmese pythons prefer warm, dark places to rest, and a heap of old jeans and shirts seemed to be the perfect...

Video: Biologists Discover First “Glow-in-the-dark” Sea Turtle

Tue, 09/29/2015 - 10:23

The ability to absorb light, transform it, and then reflect it as a different color is called biofluorescence, and it's relatively rare. Until recently, scientists thought the phenomenon was restricted to only certain fish, crustaceans, and other critters---but a late-night dive near the Solomon Islands revealed the first reptile known to exhibit the ability: the critically endangered hawksbill sea turtle. "This turtle was just hanging out with us, it was in love with the lights, it was hanging out with us and it was glowing neon yellow," said marine biologist Markus Reymann, who along...

Which of These 20 Classic Hunting Decals Do You Have?

Tue, 09/29/2015 - 07:05

Odds are, just about everybody knows someone with a Browning or Ducks Unlimited decal on their cars. It's a great way of spotting hunters out of camo, and countless friendships have started with something as simple as a conversation over a bumper sticker. Sure, decals are usually vulgar, unfunny or controversial---and may result in unwanted damage to your vehicle---but they are one way for hunters to show their pride for the sport. Below are 20 classic or creative decals that many hunters would love to slap on their cars. Are you one of them?   Read more »

Video: Tragedy Strikes Routine Falconry Demonstration

Mon, 09/28/2015 - 15:40

It takes a lot of time and dedication to train a hunting falcon, which makes it especially heartbreaking when a bird is lost. Two television hosts with a Danish hunting show recently traveled to France for a demonstration of falconry in action, but what should've been a routine flight quickly ended in disaster after the bird veered into traffic. As a general rule, falconers avoid freeways and other areas with fast-moving traffic as much as possible. It is not known why the hunters in this case decided to release the bird so close to the road. Perhaps they thought the raptor was experienced...

California Lake Disappears Overnight, Leaves Behind Thousands of Fish

Mon, 09/28/2015 - 15:26

Mountain Meadows reservoir, better known as Walker Lake, is a popular fishing hole in Westwood, California. Despite the state's long and increasingly serious drought, the 170 acre-feet reservoir has remained a popular haunt for nearby anglers. Yet on the night of September 12, residents say the lake mysteriously drained overnight. What makes the sudden water shortage so strange was that just hours earlier, fishermen had been out on the lake. The reservoir's sudden drainage left thousands of fish dead. "It's amazing how many people have come out to see the destruction," resident Eddy...

Federal Judge Upholds ATF Classification of Muzzle Brake as Silencer

Mon, 09/28/2015 - 15:18

For months, gun maker Sig Sauer has been engaged in a court case against the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) over the classification of  a muzzle brake for the Sig MPX-C carbine. According to the ATF, the muzzle brake has enough features to classify it as a suppressor, despite not fulfilling that role on its own. The agency claims that the muzzle brake can be readily transformed into a silencer with the addition of a specially designed shroud, which Sig Sauer marketed along with the gun. Last week New Hampshire District Judge Paul Barbadoro upheld the ATF's...

Carrying a Pistol with a Red Dot Sight

Mon, 09/28/2015 - 14:06

Shooters are mounting red dot sights (RDS) on their pistols with greater frequency these days. Once relegated solely to competitive events, they are moving into every discipline of pistol use. Red dot sights and weapon-mounted lights have become so widespread (particularly among military units) that Safariland Holsters has begun making accessory-compatible products. Despite their growing popularity, concealed-carry pistols with red dot sights remain uncommon. With that thought in mind, I decided to give carrying an RDS-equipped pistol a try. Much like lasers, it takes some practice...

Idaho Bowhunter Breaks Leg in Wilderness, Crawls for Days to Survive

Mon, 09/28/2015 - 11:47

When John Sain broke his leg in the middle of a vast and remote wilderness near McCall, Idaho, he thought it was the end. Sain had been backpacking through the Salmon-Challist National Forest in search of elk. It was supposed to be a short trip, but an incident last Wednesday stranded the hunter in the wilderness for four days---which he survived by crawling more than three miles to a nearby trail. "I honestly didn't think I was going to make it out," Sain told Read more »

Video: Why You Shouldn’t Text and Hunt

Mon, 09/28/2015 - 10:30

It's hard to resist the temptation to get on your phone while bored in the woods. If you're lucky enough to be in an area where you could get a signal, then you might think nothing of spending hours catching up with friends, surfing the internet, or playing Deer Hunter on your smartphone. But it can cost you. As this hunter found out, being distracted on a hunt can rob you of some golden opportunities. A doe was able to sneak within six yards of his blind, see the hunter, and dart away before he was able to bring up his bow. Ouch. Better luck next...

Video: Marksman Pulls Off Insane 3,800-yard Shot

Mon, 09/28/2015 - 10:24

The folk at Hill Country Rifles keep pushing the limits of long-range shooting. Landing a 3,600-yard (approximately 2.04 miles) shot was not enough---they've decided to push it to 3,800 yards (roughly 2.16 miles). In the video below, you can see a shooter from Hill Country Rifles pull off that 3,800-yard shot on a three-foot steel gong at FTW Ranch with a .375 CheyTac rifle. It takes some serious skill and equipment to be able to make a shot like this. To put things in...

Will These 6 Guns Work When Frozen Solid?

Mon, 09/28/2015 - 07:35

What do you get when you combine a box full of dry ice and six firearms? Other than good chance of nobody ever loaning you a gun again, you get a pretty neat science experiment. The guys behind the YouTube channel LDF Research decided to pack a crate full of dry ice and then freeze several guns to test whether they would run when frozen (almost) solid. Needless to say, when you can't even chamber a round, firing the rifle is not going to be easy. They even froze the ammo too. You can see where this is going. It...

Oregon Town Complains of “Aggressive” Deer

Mon, 09/28/2015 - 07:26

How aggressive can deer be? If anything, the animals have a reputation for being flighty rather than confrontational. That does not seem to be true for the town of Ashland, Oregon, where residents say they are constantly harassed by "aggressive" deer. The town recently held a community "Deer Summit" this week after years of complaints from residents and several high-profile cases in which members of local families were chased by does. One elderly woman was even trampled in her driveway last fall. According to Read more »

Video: How Angry Bobcats Communicate

Fri, 09/25/2015 - 15:22

Bobcats are, as a general rule, not too friendly with one another. Like mountain lions, bobcats are highly territorial animals and will never share their ranges with one another, if they can help it. Females can be especially aggressive in defending their territory from a rival, and two bobcats in the same area may mean a fight, or, in the case shown below, a long screaming match. This is because the average territory size of a female bobcat is just five square miles, while males can wander across 25 to 30 square miles. That doesn't mean that males like having competition, either, but...
