Hawaii Spearfisherman Bitten by Shark, Punches It to Escape

Fri, 09/25/2015 - 14:03

For spearfishermen in the waters off Hawaii's Big Island, there are few things scarier than sharks---and among sharks, few are more dreaded than the large and aggressive tiger. Officials with the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources confirmed earlier this week that 27-year-old Braxton Rocha was attacked just yards off Upolu Point in North Kohala. According to Rocha, he was spearfishing near some underwater caves when a 13-foot tiger shark appeared and chomped on his leg. "It was massive and she was just right in front of...

Massive Explosion at Sellier & Bellot Factory Leaves 3 Dead

Fri, 09/25/2015 - 11:56

Officials are still investigating an explosion that occurred at the historic Sellier & Bellot ammunition plant earlier this week that left three employees dead. The blast occurred at the plant's location in Vlašim, Czech Republic and is believed to have been caused by lead styphnate, an explosive commonly used in primers. Officials said no fire followed the explosion. "At this moment all I can confirm is that there has been an explosion at the Vlašim arms factory," police spokeswoman Eva Stulíková told ZprávyExtra.cz. Stulíková added that additional explosive material at...

Video: Terrifying Bluff Charge from a Bull Elephant Ends Perfectly

Fri, 09/25/2015 - 10:15

This tourist is either one of bravest men we've ever seen or he's still reeling from shock after a bull elephant charged him during a trip in Thailand. In any case, the fact that he isn't a pancake means he handled it perfectly---whether he meant to or not. There's a world of difference between a bluff charge and a real charge, but telling them apart can be very difficult. Just like bears and a number of other large animals, elephants may engage in "mock" charges. This means the elephant is not trying to kill you---not yet at least---but is merely trying to test you. Subtle signs of a mock...

Video: Young Angler Snags Bass on Barbie Pole as Proud Dad Watches

Fri, 09/25/2015 - 07:35

If this video doesn't adequately represent the exhilaration of an angler's very first catch, we're not sure what will. In this clip, a young angler, identified as Avery, reels in a 20-inch bass on a tiny Barbie fishing pole. We can only assume from the excitement in Avery and her dad's voice that they've been at this for quite some time. Judging by the positive encouragement from dad and Avery's exuberance, we think she's got a bright, fishy future ahead of her. https://youtu.be/KXYpJupNLSA...

Fri, 09/25/2015 - 07:21

A Massachusetts man and his two children spent an hour on Sunday reeling in a massive porbeagle shark off the coast of Provincetown, resulting in a catch that just narrowly missed the state record. According to Fox 25, Mike Evensen took turns bringing the shark in with his daughter Hanna while his nine-year-old son helped pilot the boat. The anglers were eventually able to bring the shark close enough to harpoon it. Back at shore, the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries officially...

Video: How a Bear Release Can Go Horribly Wrong

Thu, 09/24/2015 - 15:50

You wouldn't think that a bear release would draw a crowd of spectators, but in some cases it does. Capturing and releasing bears is a time-consuming process and not one that wildlife officers ever want to repeat---at least, not with the same bear. At release time, some agencies will have noisemakers and dogs on-hand to give the animal one last scare. The objective here is to make its last encounter with humans as negative as possible. Hopefully, that will reinforce the animal's natural fear of humans and make it less bold in the future. Karelian bear dogs, which are highly specialized in...

Photographer Tõnu Tunnel captured the photos of these surreal wooden megaphones in Estonia’s Read more »

Hunter Who Was Electrocuted by Dead Bear Makes Film

Thu, 09/24/2015 - 15:25

A freak accident deep in the wilderness of Montana's backcountry nearly ended one man's life, but also may have saved it. In 2011, Eduardo Garcia was bowhunting for elk near Gardiner when he discovered a dead bear cub. Curious, Garcia reached out to touch it with his knife, not knowing at the time that the cub was killed by a buried 2,400-volt power line hidden underneath its carcass. The shock of the electrocution threw Garcia to the ground and left him severely burned, but the hunter still found the resolve to walk three miles for help. Although it lasted for only an instant, the...

Video: Girl Tries to “Save” Non-aquatic Tortoise, Throws It into Pond

Thu, 09/24/2015 - 14:46

A word of advice: unless you are a qualified wildlife expert, please don't try to "save" wild animals. The girl featured in this video had admirable intentions, but the gopher tortoise she was trying to save is a land-based. After the girl mistook the tortoise for an aquatic turtle, she tossed it into a pond, but tortoises can't swim. Hopefully the gopher tortoise was able to escape the pond unharmed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBtfgbBlf1A&feature=youtu.be...

It is the end of an era, and many gun owners fear it is a sign of things to come. The last operating gun store within San Francisco city limits, Highbridge Arms, announced it will be closing earlier this month. General manager Steve Alcairo confirmed the decision on Facebook and said that the store will be clearing out all available inventory as soon as possible. "Dear friends and family, it's with tremendous sadness and regret that I have to announce we are closing our shop. For many reasons I cannot get into at this moment,...

No one ever said that being a wildlife officer was an easy job, and this video proves just how dangerous it can be. Please be advised this footage might be disturbing to some. This  Arkansas Game and Fish Commission officer was allegedly responding to an armed robbery suspect fleeing police. The POV camera on the officer captured this shocking footage after the suspect tried to flee by driving into a wooded area off of the highway. Considering the suspect was potentially armed, both the officer and the suspect are lucky that no one was injured. This just goes to show you that wildlife...

Officials: Bear Attacked New Mexico Hunter after He Photographed It

Thu, 09/24/2015 - 12:00

Many photographers ascribe to the philosophy of capturing nature in a picture and leaving it undisturbed, but what if nature wants to disturb you? Officials with the New Mexico Department of Game & Fish say that an elk hunter was attacked near Wagon Mound shortly after photographing a bear sow and her cub. The 60-year-old man was hunting from a treestand in the area on September 10 when he descended to take a short lunch. While he was relaxing, several bears passed by and two got into the...

Video: Men Use Excavator to Rescue Moose

Thu, 09/24/2015 - 10:06

What do you do when you find a moose stuck in a pit? If you have access to some heavy machinery, the answer is relatively simple. These construction workers broke out an excavator to dig the moose a path to safety, and although you don't see the animal until later in the video, it seems to be grateful for the assistance. Fun fact: in Europe moose are called elk. The term elk was originally used to describe especially large deer. When Europeans arrived in North America, they assigned the word to the large ungulate the native Algonkians called a wapiti. Settlers later encountered...

LA K12 Puma Bullpup Shotgun

Thu, 09/24/2015 - 07:58

You won't find the LA K12 Puma on the shelf of most gun stores. In fact, you won't find it anywhere in the United States. But it's one of the most unique shotguns to arrive in North America this year. The Puma has a distinctive style that's immediately recognizable to anyone familiar with the People's Liberation Army of China. It draws its original design from the QBZ family of assault rifles, but has been refit and remarketed as a "riot gun." For the rest of us, that means a semiautomatic 12 gauge shotgun in bullpup configuration that...

Quiz: Can You Identify These 13 Guns by Sights Alone?

Thu, 09/24/2015 - 07:14

Due to the popularity of our first two gun sight quizzes, we've decided to test your gun knowledge with a third. Like the first two, this quiz can be pretty difficult without knowledge of a wide array of guns and what their sights look like. To make things fair we left the quiz format in multiple choice and just like the others, the back of the firearm remains mostly in the...

USFWS Decides to Keep Greater Sage-grouse Off Endangered List

Wed, 09/23/2015 - 15:59

On Tuesday, the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) made the momentous decision to not list the greater sage-grouse under the Endangered Species Act. For some time, the bird had been at the heart of a debate that pitted environmentalists against industry advocates, and conservationists against land developers. This week, the Department of the Interior concluded the long debate by publishing a 341-page report that detailed why the bird is not likely to find a spot on the endangered species list anytime soon. “This is truly a historic effort---one that represents extraordinary...

5 Signs You’re Practicing with and Shooting Your Carry Gun Enough

Wed, 09/23/2015 - 15:28

I’ve got a surefire way to tell who can shoot like Jerry Miculek and who’s a novice. Here’s the trick: you just have to look at their concealed carry gun. If it’s all beat to hell in the right places, the odds are pretty good you’re dealing with an accomplished shooter. I appreciate a pristine carry handgun as much as the next guy, but if it stays that way for more than a couple of days after purchase, it’s not getting used enough---or at least not in any productive capacity. It’s more than likely a safe queen. Here are five areas where you might just notice a bit of...

Video: Kayak Angler Rammed, Chased by Hammerhead Shark

Wed, 09/23/2015 - 14:10

Shark sightings can often be troublesome for anglers. Spotting one of these fierce predators while fishing from a boat can make you worried about your catch, but seeing one from kayak may make you very well fear for your life. A kayak angler trolling for bonito off the coast of California's Gaviota State Beach gave up all hope for a peaceful fishing trip after he ran into an aggressive---and confrontational---hammerhead on Saturday. "It hit the back of my kayak twice and I turned around to see it," Mark McCracken told Read more »
