There's a bunch of fog and cheesy lighting, but hey it was the '80s.We think the real standout in the video is the synthesizer...
The 7 Best Handguns for a Beginner Shooter
For those of us who have been shooting firearms most of our lives, the simple act of using a rifle, shotgun, or pistol is not that big of a deal. For the beginning shooter, it can be extremely intimidating until he or she actually does it. Handguns offer the beginning shooter a level of confidence that can’t really be explained, but it can be enjoyed. More beginners become hooked from shooting handguns than you’d think possible, and there are some great choices...
Michigan DNR Confirms Presence of Wolf in Lower Peninsula
For only the second time in over a century, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has confirmed that a wild gray wolf has been seen in the state's Lower Peninsula.
The DNR announced on Thursday that DNA analysis of scat found last year confirmed that a wolf had been wandering through Emmet County, near the Lower Peninsula's northernmost tip. Signs of a wolf living in the area were first discovered by tribal biologists with the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians, and trail camera...
Anti-gun Groups Target Youth Firearms Safety Program, Free Gun Locks
In a surprise move, the Newtown Action Alliance and Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV) has petitioned the US Department of Justice (DOJ) to cut off funding for a popular youth firearms safety program. Earlier this month, the Department of Justice awarded a $2.4 million grant to Project ChildSafe, a program run by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) to encourage responsible firearms use as well as reducing the amount of gun accidents nationwide.f
The program also offers free gun locks and education about proper firearm storage. Due to this, many gun owners hardly expected...

Video: The Homemade, Pump-action, Slamfire Shotgun
Okay, this is dangerous.
YouTube's Royal Nonesuch is famed for his homemade firearms, from .410 revolver carbines to PVC-pipe shotguns, but his latest invention is nothing short of jaw-dropping. Well, it would have been, if it worked.
This pump-action, slamfire shotgun is a marvel of backyard gunsmithing. It has features you'd never expect to see on a slamfire gun, such as a magazine well, shell extractor, and even a makeshift cradle to hold "chambered" rounds. With so many moving parts something was bound to go...
A Dying Breed: The IZ-132Z AK Rifle
Let’s all pour out a plastic two-liter of Baltika on the curb---the age of affordable, Russian-made AKs in the United States appears to have passed. The Obama administration’s sanctions against Russian arms companies in the wake of the conflict in Ukraine have severed the “true” Kalashnikov pipeline (except for the import of a few “special” types of AKs).
Some of the last Saiga carbines to make it into the United States were offered up for sale in a converted format by RWC Group, now Kalashnikov USA, near the end of last year. Being interested in sampling all flavors of AK, I...
10 Excessively Fancy Wild Game and Fish Dishes
What's wrong with some simple venison backstrap wrapped in bacon? We don't think there's anything wrong with it, but odds are if you bring bacon-wrapped anything to one of these chefs, you'd probably be laughed out of their restaurant.
Let's face it, fancy dishes such as these (they're all by European chefs, by the way) aren't exactly light on your wallet. More to the point, you can't really say most are hearty or filling---but there is a certain artistic element that makes them fascinating. Who knows, you may even want to borrow one or two elements to use the next time you cook...
Video: Alaskan Moose Hunter Encounters Lone Wolf
Somebody must have told this wolf it was opening day of moose season.
A moose hunter near Alaska's Neva Creek was more than a little surprised after he was approached by an inquisitive wolf while out in the field. Unlike the vast majority of other states, Alaska has a large wolf population and it is not to rare to see one of the animals in the wild. Thankfully for this hunter, this time it was just one nosy canine instead of a full pack.
"I don't know, that was weird," the man remarked after the wolf left.

Smart Rifle Maker TrackingPoint Reopens after 4-month Shutdown
Texas-based "smart rifle" manufacturer TrackingPoint announced this week that the company is back in business after suspending operations for nearly four months.
Back in May, the company shut down production due to what it claimed were "financial difficulties." With the layoff of many key employees in 2014, customers feared that TrackingPoint was on its last legs. However, the company announced on Tuesday that it has successfully emerged from a...

Officials Close Largest Deer Trafficking Case in US History
After court documents were unsealed this week, Federal officials announced that a Georgia man was sentenced in US District Court to pay $1.6 million in fines for the illegal trafficking of live whitetail deer. According to the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), it is the largest fine ever issued for a wildlife crime in US history.
Officials said that 61-year-old Benjamin Chason of Climax, Georgia and another man, Ohio resident Donald W. Wainwright, illegally transported live deer from Florida and Georgia to Ohio. Their actions not only violated the law, but also greatly endangered the...
Michigan’s 7 Managed Waterfowl Hunt Areas Offer Unparalled Opportunities
Waterfowl hunting will never be as popular as upland small game or deer hunting. That’s a shame---if there’s one thing Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) does better than just about any agency anywhere, it’s providing excellent hunting opportunities at managed waterfowl areas. Michigan’s waterfowl areas offer the kind of hunting that sportsmen pay big bucks to join clubs for.
The DNR does it for free.
“The managed areas were really put together to provide high quality waterfowl hunts in areas that would attract and hold ducks,” said Joe Robison, a wildlife...
Japanese Angler Catches Giant Wolffish near Fukushima
Hirasaka Hiroshio has a job that most anglers would envy. The Japanese fisherman has spent the past several years traveling, fishing, and eating strange or rarely-seen fish. Hirasaka is in the news for recently landing a massive wolffish off the coast of Hokkaido, but the fish's size is only part of the reason why the catch has caused a stir. The other reason is that the wolffish was caught only a few hundred miles from Fukushima, the site of the 2011 nuclear power plant disaster.
Wolffish generally grow to only about three feet and about 30 pounds in weight. The wolffish caught by...
Overcome Instinct! Avoid These 3 Natural Shooting Mistakes
Every time I go to the range, I see new(er) shooters missing a lot of targets. That’s to be expected, as shooting is a skill that, like anything else, requires practice.
Earlier this week, while doing some “work” at the range, it occurred to me that many of the challenges we face as developing shooters are the result of our wiring. Like any other critter, we have natural instincts that have generally served us well over the long haul. Back when we were doing cage matches with saber-toothed tigers, certain instinctive moves were pretty helpful. Also, back when we humans were
...Photo: Seal Rides Whale off Australian Coast
We bet all the other seals are crazy jealous.
A photographer in New South Wales, Australia managed to capture this bizarre image of a seal sunbathing on top of a humpback whale. Apparently, a whale pod was feeding in the area and the opportunistic seal decided to take advantage of the bait ball that had formed. To avoid colliding with animals several times its size, the seal instead perched on one of the whales and dived in whenever there was an opening. The whale presumably didn't mind its passenger at all.
“We'd seen some amazing whales coming out of the water, everything was...
Video: Massive “Mad Max” Dust Storm Engulfs Motorists
Yesterday we shared a terrifying video of a motorist driving through a wildfire in California, and today we discovered this footage of a massive dust storm taken in New South Wales, Australia several years ago. Similar to the storm seen in the most recent Mad Max movie, this natural phenomenon looks more like a giant tidal wave than just a bit of sand and dirt blowing in the wind.
What is more astounding is that the driver plowed straight into the storm without...
Quiz: What Kind of Angler Are You?
Just like the fish they chase, anglers come in all different types. Do you yearn for fun and adventure, or are you more of a solitary creature? Are you more comfortable surrounded by friends and family, or would you rather pit your skills against other anglers for fame and fortune? Odds are you already know what kind of fisherman you are, but if you really want to be sure, take our test below and see if your guess was on the mark.

Hunting Bans in Africa Affect Rural Residents, Creates Haven for Poachers
Calls for hunting bans in Africa are not a new phenomenon, yet with recent events such as the death of Cecil the lion, a popular male lion that the Zimbabwe government claims was poached, many anti-hunting groups are once again urging African nations to close their doors to hunters. In the past these petitions have been mostly ignored, except for a few notable exceptions such as Botswana. Two years ago the southern African nation surprised many of its neighbors when it announced a blanket ban on trophy hunting. Yet instead of increasing populations of wildlife, many critics of the hunting ban...
Teen Accidentally Shoots Self in Leg for the Second Time in Three Months
A 16-year-old boy from Tulsa, Oklahoma was rushed to the hospital on Monday after accidentally shooting himself in the leg. According to Tulsa World, officers were called to the scene of the accident, a private residence, and found the teen on a bed soaked with blood. Suspecting that the bullet had severed an artery, officers quickly stopped the bleeding with a tourniquet and had the boy transported to a hospital, where he...
