SilencerCo Reveals World’s First Integrally Suppressed 9mm Pistol
SilencerCo, a popular Utah-based manufacturer of suppressors and other firearm-related accessories, unveiled four new products this week in a launch event held in Key West, Florida. The product that caused the biggest stir was undoubtedly the Maxim 9, which the company claims to be the world's first integrally suppressed 9mm pistol. According to sport shooter and professional marksman Chris Cheng, who attended the event, the Maxim 9 is built on the Smith & Wesson M&P platform.
"It's super quiet," Cheng commented after demonstrating the pistol on a series of floating targets off Key...
Video: Breaching 40-ton Whale Nearly Crushes Kayakers
Oh boy, there are few things scarier than the prospect of being crushed by something literally bigger than most of the dinosaurs. An average humpback whale weighs approximately 79,000 pounds. To put that mind-boggling number in perspective, it's about the equivalent of 16 pickup trucks. Now imagine that coming out of the ocean, linger in the air just long enough for you to realize what's about to happen, and then slamming on top of you.
That's pretty scary.
Yet for these kayakers, who lived through the experience, it was a "most extraordinary thing."
The below incident took place...
Scientists Discover New Species of Extremely Venomous Death Adder
A team of researchers from Bangor University and the Western Australian Museum recently identified a new species of the highly venomous snakes commonly called death adders. The snake, which was discovered in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, was officially designated Acanthophis cryptamydros, the Kimberley death adder.
It may not look menacing with its light coloring and 24-inch length, but the snake is a highly capable predator. According to a Read more »
12 Animal Selfies That Were All Terrible Ideas
It seems that 2015 is the year of the animal selfie, and wildlife officials are far from happy about it. Whether it's taking selfies with venomous rattlesnakes, Yellowstone bison, or bears, some people will stop at nothing to get the perfect picture. That has resulted in painful...
This Dangerous Gopher Trap Will Make You Make You Facepalm
There are safe ways to trap or kill rodents and then there's this contraption.
The device in question consists of a 12 gauge shotgun mounted with 2x4s, a mousetrap attached to the trigger with a string, and a piece of wire mesh attached to the mousetrap with fishing line. What could go wrong? Several things---if ever left unattended, it could easily be triggered accidentally by an unknowing individual, just to name one problem.
We're all for creative solutions to problems, but making a homemade shotgun booby trap is not a solution to any problem we can think...
Video: Anglers Mistake Deer with Vest for Hunter
No, deer, you're doing it wrong. The hunters are supposed to be the ones with the vests.
Two anglers in Western Michigan spotted this deer near the Muskegon River and were surprised to find that it was wearing a blaze-orange vest. The deer wasn't armed, but it did jump on their boat and begin nibbling their gear.
How did a deer of all critters get its hands on a vest? Judging from its demeanor and familiarity with humans, it's a good bet that this deer probably spent a lot of time around people. It might be someone's "pet" or it simply wandered into traffic enough times that some good...
Video: Homemade Armor-piercing 12 Gauge Tungsten Carbide Slugs
You probably think of most shotgun slugs as slow chunks of soft lead, but these are not most slugs.
These are custom-made tungsten carbide perpetrator slugs. The secret to the armor-defeating rounds is the ultra-hard tungsten carbide core.
The hardness of the tungsten core more than makes up for comparatively low velocity of the projectile because it does not deform when striking hard surfaces. Overall these are pretty impressive rounds, especially considering they were homemade.

The BAREBOW! Chronicles: The “Moose Died in the Wrong Place” Debacle
In 2001, Yukon outfitters Alan and Mary Young, with whom I had hunted black bear previously in British Columbia, made me an offer I just couldn’t refuse: two grizzly hunts for the price of one. Their new area up in the northern part of the Territory had not been tested yet for spring grizzly since they acquired it, so Alan---eager to help me finish the Super Slam---invited me to hunt with him for 10 days in June, and, if unsuccessful then, to return for another 10-day hunt in late September, at no extra charge! That was a deal no serious bear hunter could refuse, and I was, for...
Survey: Americans Disapprove of Obama’s Gun Policy
According to a survey recently conducted by CNN and ORC International, the majority of Americans are skeptical about new gun control laws, and just about half believe current regulations are "about right." Further, the results from the nationwide survey indicate that most Americans are disappointed in the way that President Barack Obama is handling gun policy, despite more Democrat voters participating in the polling than Republicans.
The survey interviewed a total of 1,012 adults across a diverse range...
The Pros and Cons of Hunting Partners
I am somewhat of a loner---I have taken more than 20 bowhunting road trips and on the majority of them, I've gone it alone. I partnered up with my buddy Ron on three occasions, twice to North Dakota and once to Missouri. I have found there are pros and cons to both scenarios. Let’s take a look at both sides of the equation and hopefully help you make an informed decision on your next trip.
Pros
Many people like to have someone to share the highs and lows of hunting with them. It can be nice have someone lay a high-five on you when you put a good buck on the ground after days of working...
Bear Cub Sneaks into Colorado Pizzeria, Passes Out
Employees at a pizzeria in Colorado Springs got a surprise when they found a sleepy bear cub passed out in their prep room, which had just finished dining on a tub of cinnamon bread icing.
Bear sightings are not uncommon in Colorado around this time of year, especially when the bears are eager to pack on the pounds before winter arrives. However, as small as the cub was, it did provoke a scare during its romp through town. According to the Colorado Springs Gazette, the bear...
Video: This is What Driving Through a California Wildfire is Like
This is what you'll see when you don't heed fire evacuation warnings.
This video shows what it's like to drive through a wildfire long after everyone else has evacuated. The video was filmed in Anderson Springs, California on Sunday. The video's uploader was surprised by how quickly the flames moved and they admitted "we did wait way too long to get out."
After he realized it was time to flee, he hopped in his car and starting driving through the fiery chaos. You can see flames rising on both sides of the vehicle burning buildings. The driver was lucky to have made it out of the raging...
Video: The Snake with a Spider for a Tail
Meet the spider-tailed horned viper, one of the most unique and interesting snakes in the world. The horned viper is believed to have potent venom, but that is not what makes these deadly predators so fascinating. Rather, it is their spider-shaped tail, which the viper uses to draw in arachnid-eating prey. The horned viper is an expert at mimicking the motions of a spider, and its rock-colored camouflage renders it nearly invisible.
The snake is not considered much of a danger to humans. It is only known to exist in remote areas of Iran and is rarely encountered by people. In fact, the...
5 Guns from World War One That Are Still Used Today
Historians and gun collectors often point to World War Two for its wide variety of iconic and vastly influential firearms, but it should be noted that the technology of warfare truly changed decades earlier, during the trench warfare of World War One---or the Great War, as it was known at the time. The First World War saw the introduction of wireless communication, tanks, aircraft, submachine guns, and more reliable firearms that left behind nineteenth-century tactics. Guns were now more accurate, able to fire off more shots, and faster to reload.
The five guns on this list saw action...
Video: The 4 Largest Bears Ever Taken by Hunters

Young Florida Anglers Reel In Loaded Handgun
Instead of hooking a nice bass or some bluegill, three young boys fishing near Florida's Waterford Lakes reeled in a bag filled with ammunition, a handgun, and spare magazines. According to the Waterford Lakes Community Association, the boys hooked the bag while fishing on Labor Day and the contents were later turned over to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.
Joe Corica, a security guard for Waterford Lakes, said he was on patrol when he saw one...
Study: Eating More Fish May Lower Risk of Depression
Anglers already know that fishing is good for the soul, but now scientists suspect that eating fish may also stave off depression. A new study recently published in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health found that a diet rich in seafood may curb the risk of depression by as much as 17 percent.
"Depression affects an estimated 350 million people worldwide, and is projected to become the second leading cause of ill health by 2020," the researchers, led by Dongfeng Zhang of Qingduao University...
Video: How to Fillet a Flatfish in One Minute
This woman has some serious filleting skills. One of the best ways to tell whether someone is good at something is if they make it look easy, and this woman makes filleting look as easy as finding snow in Alaska. A methodical cut here, a long slice there, it almost seems as if she had finished before she even started.
To be fair, many anglers consider halibut to be an easier fish to fillet---while not as easy to get all the meat out of---and the fish shown here is on the smaller side. We'd really like to see her tackle a bigger halibut next time.
What do you think? Can you do...
Are Bucks Avoiding Your Treestands?
Some recent research on whitetail movements suggests that bucks can learn where your treestands are located. Even more importantly, they tend to avoid those areas.
All hunters who have been in the field long enough have been "busted" by a buck at some point or another. Sometimes these happen because of a loud, easily-avoidable misstep or dropped piece of equipment. Other times, a buck may become aware of our presence from the slightest untimely movement, sound, or wisp of human scent. In these cases he most likely sneaks away undetected and we never knew we had a close...
Officials Say Report of Tennessee Bear Mauling is Likely Bogus
When officials with the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency (TWRA) received a report of a vicious bear attack in Campbell County earlier this month, the agency pulled out all the stops. A public advisory was put in place, traps were set, and conservation officers expected to capture---and potentially euthanize---an aggressive bear. Judging from the deep laceration wounds inflicted on 27-year-old Michael Savage, who said the animal attacked him while he was walking home on September 4, the bear was certainly dangerous. However, last week the TWRA lifted the warning and retrieved its traps....
