Video: Raccoon Learns to Knock on Door with Pebble for Food
If you give a mouse a cookie, it'll ask for a glass of milk. If you give a raccoon a bowl of cat food, apparently it learns how to knock.
This video was recorded by a homeowner after she discovered that a raccoon was knocking on her glass door. It figured out how to make the noise by rolling a small rock between its palms.
Generally speaking, feeding raccoons is not something you want to do. Not only does it train raccoons to lose their fear of humans, it can also spread disease and add to overpopulation problems. Raccoons may seem like cute and cuddly creatures, but remember...
Quiz: Can You Identify These 12 Guns by Sights Alone?
Did you ace our first gun sights quiz and want more? Like the first one, this quiz can be pretty difficult without knowledge of a wide array of guns and what their sights look like. Remember, process of elimination is your friend. Think you've got what it takes to get all 12 correct?

Video: Super-friendly Deer Nuzzles Dove Hunters
We have the sneaking suspicion that this buck is going to have a change of heart come deer season.
Most deer are afraid of humans, and the more experienced they are, the further they usually stay away. At least, that's what is supposed to happen, but in the video below a young buck is more than happy to approach two dove hunters and even nuzzles them. Needless to say, the hunters are dumbfounded by their new hunting companion.
"We're out here at the ranch dove hunting and all of a sudden this random wild deer decided to make friends with Jacob," said the cameraman. "He just walked up to...
The 7 Best Hunting Scopes under $700
Years ago, I was working behind the gun counter of a local sporting goods store. We carried a decent range of firearms, from moderately priced rifles up to some pretty expensive ones. We offered mounting and bore sighting for every scope purchased with a rifle. It seemed that every year, some guy would come in and buy a nicer rifle, and then want to put cheap, ineffective glass on top of it. I usually tried to convince them otherwise and quite often it worked. Always put good glass on top of your hunting rifle. Read more »
Ohio Officer Embroiled in Controversy after Shooting Deer on Church Lawn
A police officer in Middleburg Heights, Ohio is in hot water after shooting and killing a wounded deer on the lawn of a local church.
According to Fox 8, Officer Joesph Kaetzel responded to a call from near St. Bartholomew's Church last month to find a young deer on the property with an injured leg. The deer was being cared for at the time by a woman and her young daughter. Kaetzel ordered the woman and daughter away from the animal for their own safety and then shot the deer.
The woman...
Female Anti-poaching Team “Black Mambas” Win UN Award
A mostly-female South African ranger group named the "Black Mambas" was recently awarded the Champions of the Earth award by the United Nations. The award, which is granted by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), recognized the "rapid and impressive impact" the 26-member team has had in combating poaching.
“Their many successes are a result of their impressive courage and determination to make a difference in their community. The Black Mambas are an inspiration not only locally, but across the world to all those working to eliminate the scourge of the illegal wildlife trade,” UNEP...
New Hampshire Angler Discovers Pipe Bomb in River
What is the strangest thing you have ever found while fishing? For one angler in Concord, New Hampshire, he can now answer what was definitely the most dangerous. The Concord Police Department reported on Monday that a steel pipe bomb was recovered from the Merrimack River after it was identified by an angler. According to the Concord Patch, the device was described as being about six inches in length with caps on both ends, bound in electrical tape, and with a fuse still attached.
“I...
Video: Slow-motion Taser Impact on Bare Skin
Yes, they really did find someone brave enough to test this Taser on.
If you've ever wondered how a Taser affects the human body, this video is perhaps the best example of that. The Slow Mo Guys traveled to the Arizona headquarters of Taser International to test out one of the company's namesake products. Of course, for that, they need a human guinea pig.
Obviously, volunteering to get shot by a Taser is no easy decision. While designed to be less-lethal with minimal dangerous side effects, Tasers are still highly dangerous. The Taser from this test came from the X26 line, which also...
Michigan’s Canada Goose Season Could Be Historic
Were did all the geese come from this year? Joe Robison is scratching his head.
“From my scouting, there seem to be more geese around than last year,” said Robison, a Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) wildlife biologist and hard-core waterfowl hunter. “But our banding was down. We usually band 900 to 1,000, but this year we did 575.
“We had 10 inches of rain in May and 15 inches in June---that’s a record amount,” He continued. “It flooded out a lot of nests.”
One theory that Robison is working on is that the molt migrants---resident Canada geese that for...
Video: How to Twirl a Revolver Like a Video Game Character
Fans of the Metal Gear Solid series may recall the ridiculous, character-establishing entrance of Revolver Ocelot in Metal Gear Sold 3: Snake Eater. True to his name, Major Ocelot displayed his love of revolvers by deftly manipulating the firearms in a spectacular---if somewhat ludicrous---show of revolver twirling.
Impressive, yes, but not impossible. A fan managed to emulate the entire routine step by step and uploaded the results to YouTube. Comparing side by side with the in-game footage, we have to admit that the real life version of the trick is just as neat. At...
Sludge Spill Kills 150,000 Eagle Trout in California
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) announced on Wednesday that more than 150,000 Eagle Lake trout died in American River Hatchery after routine maintenance on a pipe caused a flow of dirty water and gunk to flood the hatchery, causing a chiller to fail. Officials attributed the fish kill to rising temperatures afterwards.
“We already had less inventory than we wanted for this hatchery,” CDFW hatchery systems manager Bill Cox told The Sacramento Bee. “Now, if we lose those fish,...

Photos: Wild Pig with Mysterious Blue Fat Found in California
That is a very startling---and unappetizing---shade of blue.
Reddit user GlendilTEK recently posted these pictures online, claiming that the pig was harvested on private land by relatives near Morgan Hill, California. The feral pig appeared to be normal at first, but when the hunters cut it open, it revealed a layer of fluorescent blue fat. In the pictures it appeared that the rest of the pig was normal-looking and the blue color seems to be isolated entirely to the fat.
"We have no clue why the fat is this color but it is all over the pig no matter the section," GlendilTek...

Video: Anthony Bourdain Eats Salmon Smoked Using a Meteorite
Anthony Bourdain is famous for visiting exotic locations and trying unusual cuisine, but this is probably the first time he has eat food cooked using a space rock.
Master bladesmith Bob Kramer first crafted a knife for the host out of a meteorite. The blade itself was impressive, but Bob really surprised Bourdain with his cooking.
Kramer smoked some delicious looking salmon fillets by using an induction coil to heat a chunk of space debris. That might sound like an out-of-this-world cooking technique, but the results actually look very appetizing.

Video: Officers Release Desperate Deer from Soccer Net
This Wisconsin buck found out the hard way that it was not meant to be a goalie.
Officers from the Adams Police Department teamed up with deputies from the Adams County Sheriff's Office to free this deer from a school soccer net on Wednesday. Releasing any wild animal always carries an element of risk, not the least for a buck with a pointy set of antlers. Yet the officers here were able to quickly and efficiently release this trapped deer.
"This morning the Adams County Sheriff’s Office and the City of Adams Police Department were dispatched to the A-F Elementary School for a deer...
5 Bad Shooting Range Habits That Might Get You Killed
One of the scariest traits you can develop from a self-defense perspective is a false sense of security.
You know what I’m talking about. We’re human, so we’re superior not only because we have opposable thumbs, but because we can think, strategize, reason, and hope. The hope part, while awesome and critical to our long-term survival, can also get us into big trouble on occasion.
When most people buy a gun for self-defense, they immediately feel better, and sometimes even invincible. “Now, I’m prepared!” That's the downside of hope.
Buying a gun no more prepares one for...
Video: Black Bear Family Struggles to Use Hammock
These bears aren't doing it right.
Carol Harrington of Washington, New Jersey got a shock two weeks ago when she discovered that her hammock was suddenly occupied by a black bear sow and her two cubs. The bears were having some trouble figuring out how the contraption works, so Harrington decided to record their efforts for posterity.
"They're having so much fun though," she said on the video.
According to NJ 101.5, the bears have been wandering around Washington Borough for some time. The bears do...
