M+M Inc. MRL Kit for AK Rifles

Fri, 09/04/2015 - 08:00

Having used, repaired, and maintained AK rifles for many years, one of the often frustrating aspects about the platform is the lack of consistency in magazine design. Two different magazines' locking tabs are seldom the same length. This can be due to wear or just the manufacturing process. While high-quality magazines are out there, they can be expensive. For some that is fine, but for many the cost-effectiveness of the AK is paramount. With millions of military surplus magazines available at lower costs, you want to use them if possible. For the most mags, you just give them a try...

Fri, 09/04/2015 - 07:04

A young black bear that nibbled the leg of a Connecticut hiker last week was shot dead by wildlife officials on Wednesday, drawing criticism from some who believed the hiker intentionally approached the bears to film them. Stephanie Rivkin posted videos of the bear encounter on her Facebook page, including a video of one bear displaying signs of agitation and coming close enough to nuzzle her leg. The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection stated that the bear, which had been previously tagged, had a history of negative interactions with humans and was euthanized this...

Video: Young Archer Finds Another Place to Store Her Arrows

Thu, 09/03/2015 - 15:33

Is it a fashion statement, or is it a practical way to store your arrows? As long as you have no broadheads to snag on anything, this is actually a pretty good excuse to leave the quiver at home. A young athlete from Stavanger Bueskyttere, a Norwegian archery team, decided to use her practice arrows as makeshift hairpins while training. As practical as it may be for stand-and-shoot archery, we'll have to admit that this hairdo probably isn't ideal for staying mobile. One strong gust of wind and you may find yourself flying backwards like an unwieldy umbrella. On the bright side, it may...

Video: This is One Epic Spearfishing Fail

Thu, 09/03/2015 - 10:03

Either something has gone horribly wrong here, or this spearfisherman ran into the world's only projectile-proof fish. Atlantic spadefish are strong fighters and tougher than they look, but they aren't exactly covered in armor plating. Yet this fish took a shot from a speargun point-blank and merely shrugged it off. We're not really sure what happened, but the it looked as if the spear simply lacked the power to penetrate this the fish. That could either be due to faulty equipment, or just improper loading and maintenance. The spear probably didn't make a boink noise when it hit the...

Video: Too Hot Outside? Give Underwater Archery a Try

Thu, 09/03/2015 - 09:20

Spearguns operate on the same principles as hunting bows, so why shouldn't you be able to use a Bowtech underwater? That's exactly what the folks at Eastmans' Hunting Journals decided to test in in their recent video. The underwater archer even demonstrates some reasonable accuracy by popping balloons with the arrows. As some commenters have pointed out, bows are not meant to be fully submerged or fired underwater. While we can't think of any particular way this would damage your bow, it might not be a good idea to try it for...

Thu, 09/03/2015 - 07:56

The animal had apparently been separated from its herd and was living by itself in the wild. The animal became so overgrown with wool that its continued survival was at risk. According to The Guardian, a local animal rehabilitation group captured the sheep and will be taking care of it until it can be sheared. The...

A mechanic in Palmdale, California got the shock of his life when a 75-pound mountain lion pounced on him early Friday morning. According to Hank Barkefelt of LJ Automotive, he was working when the large cat jumped on him, knocked him down, and ran off. "I just opened up the shop like I do every morning, and she came out from a little cubby hole we have back there and just stumped me against the wall and took off," Barkefelt told ABC 7. "She wasn't aggressive at all, no teeth, no nothing....

Video: Can You Guess What’s Behind This “Self-defense” Beard?

Wed, 09/02/2015 - 15:21

The vast majority of our readers have probably guessed the answer, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Do you think beard carry is a good option? What kind of firearms do you think will go well with your new beard-growing lifestyle? Should it be soup- and beverage-resistant? Should beards be banned? Will pink beards for women gun owners be the hot new trend? Yes, it's definitely a silly topic, but consider this your nonsensical diversion for the day. https://youtu.be/Q3GjxmE9DQw...

The BAREBOW! Chronicles: Who Was Mr. Murphy?

Wed, 09/02/2015 - 14:29

If you are someone who has pondered the question of whether you might want to tackle someday the most dangerous carnivores in North America with a bow and arrow, you need to be fully aware of the magnitude and difficulty of the challenge you’re setting yourself before making that major decision. And you need to realize, as well, that there’s a strong likelihood you’ll have to endure---as I did---multiple manifestations of Murphy's Law in action. Without fear of contradiction, I will state that very few modern bowhunters have bagged a grizzly or Alaskan brown bear on their...

It's not everyday that you encounter a python and a cobra in a life-or-death battle while walking to class, but that what happened to students at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University. Passers-by on Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University campus were shocked last Thursday when what’s believed to be a reticulated python and a king cobra began “fighting” each other on the street. Reports from witnesses said the battle went on for about 30 minutes before the...

Have you ever seen a flathead catfish this big? James Klauzer, who caught the massive fish from Sangchris Lake in Illinois last week, said it was the biggest he's encountered in the state---and it may edge out the Prairie State's current flathead record. The fish weighed a whopping 81.4 pounds, surpassing a 78-pound flathead caught by Jody Harris from Carlyle Lake almost exactly 20 years ago. "Jim Klauzer stopped in last night to pick up a little tackle, little did he know he would be the new record holder for Illinois FlatHead catfish!" wrote Big Red's Bait and Tackle onRead more »

Video: Dangerous Trick Shooting with the 1936 LA Sheriff’s Department

Wed, 09/02/2015 - 10:12

The concept of gun safety has changed dramatically over the years, and that's very evident after watching this 1936 Los Angeles Sheriff's Department video. Without a doubt these men were some of the finest marksmen of their day, but shooting a lit cigar out of someone's mouth is not something a police officer, or most anyone for that matter, would try today. The video also features an officer writing his initials in a target with a Thompson submachine gun. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDP8BRSEjrA...

Video: Anglers Realize They’re Drifting Over a Drop Too Late

Wed, 09/02/2015 - 09:23

There are few things more frustrating than telling your buddy about the danger of potential imminent death, only for him to laugh it off and inform you that you're wrong. In the following video, a pair of anglers come dangerously close to an artificial drop, despite repeated and frantic warnings from the passenger. Distracted by his rendition of Merle Haggard's "The Fightin' Side of Me," the other angler cheerfully---and obliviously---brushes him off. He later realizes (perhaps too late) that his friend was right. Hopefully they were caught on the lip and managed to back out, otherwise they...

Video: Coyote Tackles Hunter Head-on

Tue, 09/01/2015 - 15:35

As a coyote hunter, one of the last things you'd expect is for one of the wily predators to barrel straight into you. Yet that is exactly what happened to Rob Reynold with Mojo TV. According to the hunters, this well-fed coyote interrupted the hunt when it attacked a decoy and kept right on running, even as the hunters took their first shot. To be fair, it appeared that tackling Reynold was the right play---it surprised the hunters, who were doubling up laughing. Reynold later said he could've held onto the coyote instead of letting it go, but that does not sound like an advisable thing to...
