4 Ways to Make the Most of Early Fall Scrapes
Almost every deer hunter I know gets excited about seeing a scrape with fresh tracks in it near the area they hunt. In fact, many hunters who come across one in November just put up a treestand there and start hunting. Many hunters do not realize that bucks will begin making, and subsequently visiting, scrapes as soon as raised testosterone levels cause their velvet to fall off.
There’s a problem with immediately setting up over those scrapes in November, though---bucks may not be back for days. They are off chasing does and don’t care much about the scrapes unless they are fresh out...
Video: Would the ‘Breaking Bad’ M60 Turret Work in Real Life?
Spoiler alert! If you haven't watched the series finale of Breaking Bad and would like to, we recommend coming back to this video later. Trust us, you'll want to.
On the other hand, if you've already seen the last episode, then odds are that you remember the M60 "turret" that Walter built in the trunk of his car. After all, who can forget? The automated turret was the last big surprise of the show---and the final ace up Walter's sleeve. At the end of the final episode, it gunned down most of Walt's enemies. If you're like us, it probably got you wondering afterwards whether...
The 10 Countries with the Most Guns in Private Hands
Every wonder which countries have the most firepower? This list counts down the nations with the most guns in private hands. Unlike most lists that cover this subject, ours will be based on total amount of privately owned firearms rather than guns per capita.
Data is taken from Small Arms Survey.

10. Canada
Estimated private firearms: 9,950,000

Gun Rights Groups Join Forces in Lawsuit Against Seattle “Gun Violence Tax”
The National Firearms Association (NRA), National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), and Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) filed a lawsuit against the City of Seattle on Monday to challenge its recently approved "gun violence tax." Unanimously passed earlier in August and set to go into effect next year, the new city ordinance places a $25 tax on each new firearm purchased and a five-cent tax on every round of ammunition—except .22 LR, which will carry a two-cent tax.
The...
Officials: Gray Wolves Have Returned to California
It has been almost a century since California's last native wolf died, but it seems the species is making an unexpected comeback. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) confirmed on August 20 that two adult gray wolves and five pups have been spotted in Siskiyou County, making it the first wolf pack in the Golden State in nearly 100 years.
“This news is exciting for California,” Charlton H. Bonham, CDFW Director, said in a press release. “We knew wolves would...
Detroit Residents Turn Giant Street Hole into Fishing Pond
It's only about four feet wide and 15 feet long, but residents of one Detroit neighborhood say it's now their newest fishing pond.
A giant hole on Hull Street in the city's East Side has been around for about four years now. It was apparently part of a construction project that was later abandoned. Angry over the lack of response from local officials, residents decided to protest the hole's existence by releasing fish into it earlier this summer.
"We like our fish, but honestly we'd like the road fixed," resident Pete Bolden told Read more »
Video: Australian Man Rescues Venomous Snake from Tin Can
Australian wildlife expert Tim Faulkner has spent nearly his entire life working with dangerous reptiles, and in Australia, that can be risky business. However, while the land down under may have some of the deadliest snakes in the world, that doesn't make them especially smart.
Faulkner recently posted a online showing him and his team rescuing a red-bellied black snake from what appears to be an old bourbon or beer can. It should be noted that red-bellied black snakes are only considered less dangerous due to how venomous other Australian snakes are. These snakes can still...
Video: World’s First-ever Snowmobile Backflip on Open Water
It looks like there's no more off-season for snowmobilers. This rider just did something no one else has ever done (at least that we're aware of)---a backflip on open water!
The lead-up to the trick is pretty straightforward. All the rider needed to do was maintain enough speed to hit the ramp and then quickly rev the engine to flip the machine.
The landing completely blew our mind. We have no idea how he managed that on open water, but watch for yourself below.

Tennessee’s Boone Lake Remains a Strong Fishery Despite Drawdown
One of America’s premier game fish is the striped bass. They're one of the most versatile angling targets. Stripers can be pursued using almost any imaginable sportfishing technique, from bait fishing and fly fishing to trolling. Stripers can thrive in Southern inland lakes or as ocean fish, and they prevalent on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. They’re tough fighters, they grow to monstrous size at a rapid rate, and they’re wonderful table fare.
Of all the locations where I’ve caught stripers, probably the most unlikely-looking location is Boone Lake near Kingsport,...
Video: This is What Happens When You Launch a Rocket Under a Frozen Lake
Sometimes ice fishing can get a little boring, especially if you run out of beer or propane. It seems like Nils Bremer, the uploader of this video, got a more than a little bored on the ice because he decided to launch rockets under it, with surprisingly explosive results.
First Nils broke a hole in the ice with a broom handle, and then he placed the rocket in the water with the fuse hanging out.
After lighting the fuse the rocket zipped away under the surface ice and spectacularly exploded about 30 feet away.

Michigan’s GEMS Are a Hunter’s Best Friend
When the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) asked for a hunting-license fee increase a couple of years back, it promised to put some of those funds to work improving hunting opportunities. Among the first projects it tackled was upland game bird hunting.
The DNR created a series of walk-in ruffed grouse and woodcock hunting areas called GEMS---Grouse Enhanced Management Sites. The idea was to create trails through high-quality upland bird hunting areas that would be enhanced with additional fruit-bearing plants. They'd also be cut on a shorter rotation to better maintain them as...
Video: Fox Steals a Bowl of Fruit Loops
Silly fox, Fruit Loops are for kids.
We're not exactly sure what's going on in this video. The video starts off with a fox eyeing a bowl of Fruit Loops, but we can't tell why there is cereal or a fox in the first place.
After a couple seconds of sizing up the cameraman, the fox ran in and snatched the bowl away. You can see the fox cautiously eating the sugary cereal before the video ends.

Video: Grizzly Thoroughly Enjoys Roll Down Hill in Denali National Park
Remember the good ol' days when you were a kid and could enjoy a leisurely roll down a hill without worrying about ruining your clothes or looking like a crazy person?
If this video purportedly recorded in Denali National Park is any indicator, apparently grizzly bears enjoy pretty much the exact same things as human children.
There probably won't be anyone coming along and bothering them about permanent grass stains on their fur, however.

America’s First International Superstar: “Little Sure Shot” Annie Oakley
“I’d like to see every woman know how to handle firearms as naturally as they know how to handle babies.”
Do you know who said that? No, it was not an election candidate exercising a major debate faux pas. The speaker of this quote was none other than one of the most renowned shooters of all time---Annie Oakley.
Born in 1860, she met Sitting Bull in 1882 as a part of the Buffalo Bill Wild West shows. After seeing her split a playing card in half with a single shot and put five more rounds in it before it hit the ground, the Native American Chief gave her the nickname,...
A Quick Primer on Self-defense in the United States
If you kill someone in self-defense, are you guilty of homicide?
Well, yes, technically speaking, but we’ll get into that more in a minute.
You know as well as I do that lawyers get paid by the page, so any discussion of the legal issues surrounding a self-defense incident could break the internet. We just don’t have that many words available here.
With that said, there are a few issues that are almost universally misunderstood. Let’s address them here, with a goal of introducing the issues. If you choose to carry a gun for self-defense, it’s entirely up to you to understand...
The Best Rifles for a First-time Shooter
Introducing someone to the shooting sports is a tricky affair. You want to show them the fun and adventure behind the sport, but the last thing you want is to put the new shooter off by using the wrong gun for his or her initial ventures into the shooting world. Luckily there are some outstanding firearm choices for the new shooter.// <![CDATA[

Video: This is What Happens When You Start Feeding Raccoons
"Don't know where I went wrong... only had one coon when it all started!" reads the description of this YouTube video.
It sums up the horror and regret of having dozens of raccoons waiting on your doorstep and knowing that it's all your fault.
The uploader of this video obviously made a habit of feeding wild animals on his porch. One thing led to another and now there are dozens of raccoons waiting on him.

Video: Man Catches Fish from Sixth-floor Apartment Balcony
This angler has life figured out. He can go fishing from his balcony and he doesn't have to leave his house to go to the grocery store.
Being six stories above a river would probably stop less motivated anglers from fishing, but not this man. After casting (or more accurately dropping) his line in the river below, he apparently caught a nice-sized fish.
While we probably wouldn't eat a fish caught from that river, we'm sure this angler turned his catch into a nice meal.

Video: Family of Bears Takes Over New Jersey Backyard Pool
A person from Rockaway Township, New Jersey uploaded a video of a family of bears making quite the splash in their backyard.
In the video you can see a mother bear and her five cubs enjoying an out-of-ground pool and other fun items. One of the bear cubs was even adventurous enough to try out the pool's slide, while another one played with the swing set.
At one point you can hear a little girl say "I wish the bears were in someone else's yard." We empathize, but appreciate the video nonetheless.

Wisconsin High Schoolers Land Massive, Prehistoric Paddlefish by Hand
Friends Alec Riddle and Logan Thomas of Middleton, Wisconsin, went fishing in late July on the Wisconsin River below the Prairie du Sac dam, hoping to catch a big flathead catfish.
Instead, the two 15-year-olds landed and quickly released a huge paddlefish, an uncommon prehistoric fish that’s found only in large rivers like the Wisconsin, Ohio, Mississippi, Missouri, and Yellowstone. Paddlefish are a “threatened” species in Wisconsin, and no longer live upriver of Prairie du Sac.
The boys landed the giant fish, which they estimated to weigh over 100 pounds and measure more than six...
