Video: Elephant Seal’s “Theft” of Boat Gets Hilariously Interrupted

Thu, 08/20/2015 - 14:24

This video, which purportedly came from the British Antarctic Survey, gives us a glimpse into the lives of the men and women who work at the ends of the earth---and the terrors they face on a daily basis. That apparently includes having your boat appropriated by an elephant seal. In this video, a pair of Survey members approach their boat, only to find a giant seal is also waiting for them. After some verbal encouragement, the seal is dissuaded from more criminal pursuits. We can only imagine what might have happened if it resisted. https://youtu.be/hRj5gXb97vI...

Scientists have calculated their biting power at around 3,000 psi, far eclipsing other large predators such as lions and tigers. "Having been bitten by a smaller gator I was curious what would happen if a very large one like Elvis was to bite me," Jason McDonald, Elvis' handler, told the Daily Mail. Curious is...

Thu, 08/20/2015 - 07:47

Talk about being frightened and embarrassed at the same time. A California man found himself ambushed by a bear in rural Midpines, California after stepping out of his home to reach his outhouse. According to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, 66-year-old Vietnam veteran Larry Yepez fought with the bear and suffered injuries to his head, legs, arms, abdomen, hands, and feet. Ruger Single-Ten Revolver

Thu, 08/20/2015 - 07:16

Single-action rimfire revolvers are one of those things whose allure, while undeniable, is hard to quantify. They're not as fast or easy to reload as a semiauto and often hold less ammunition and cost more than their autoloading alternatives. While they do offer some real improvements over semiautos, the biggest reasons to purchase one are intangible---which is why I have such a difficult time explaining my seemingly irrational love for the .22 LR Ruger Single-Ten. I say irrational, but that’s not wholly accurate. Like seeing a ballgame at Fenway Park or Yankee Stadium, the experience is...

Video: Deer Shrugs Off Point-blank Muzzleloader Shot

Wed, 08/19/2015 - 15:22

This hunter either forgot to load a projectile in his muzzleloader or this deer is actually bulletproof. If you've never seen a hunter take a super-close shot at a deer, "hit" it, and have the animal run off fine as rain, you're about to. In this video, Drury Outdoors team member Rod Owen has the good fortune to get a buck come within 10 yards in a 2012 hunt. Owen takes up his muzzleloader and makes what should have been a perfect shot. However, what comes out of the end of the barrel looks more like a fireworks display than a bullet. In fact, you can see what appears to be smoking powder...

Wed, 08/19/2015 - 15:11

The New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife recently announced the state's first cobia spearfishing record. The honor goes to William Maier of Medford, who on July 17 took a 60-pound cobia from Cape May while fishing with his father. "He was freediving in 40 ft. of water and saw 3 cobia swimming towards him," the agency reported. "He shot the largest with a Riffe Euro 100cm. The fish ran hard and took about 50 yds. of line off the reel. Surfacing, William locked down the line and was towed around for about 15 minutes without the fish tiring. A follow-up shot slowed the fish and allowed...

A Recipe for the Perfect Fall Food Plot

Wed, 08/19/2015 - 13:53

Planting food plots on your hunting property has many year-round benefits. The right food in the spring and summer can keep does and fawns on your property, where they will remain into the fall when bucks are cruising. Bucks will visit spring and summer food plots all year if they are in the right location and have secure cover nearby. But if you want to plant a food plot that will bring deer in during the actual hunting season, one that will attract both bucks and does well into the fall and early winter, it’s hard to beat planting brassicas, a family of plants that have a lot of appeal...

Pilot Whales Crash New Jersey Fishing Tournament

Wed, 08/19/2015 - 12:59

Anglers hoping to snag the grand prize at a fishing tournament in Cape May found themselves some new competition earlier this week. Several pods of pilot whales---which are actually large dolphins despite their name---surfaced near anglers off the New Jersey coast and began feeding on nearby fish. Dolphin sightings are generally welcomed by most fishermen, but rarely in the midst of a highly competitive tournament. According to Bob Schoelkopf of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, pilot whales are quite accustomed to anglers in the area and are relatively comfortable with boats. The...

Video: Master Craftsman Builds AK-47 Guitar

Wed, 08/19/2015 - 11:23

This is a work of art. Jimmy Diresta, a master craftsman, artist, and designer, decided to meld together the aesthetics of an AK rifle with the functionality of a Ibanez guitar---or Gat-Tar, as the new creation is called. Now the first thing you see in the below video is Diresta laying out an AK next to the Ibanez, but fear not, he does not actually strip apart the rifle to build the guitar. That would be sacrilege. Instead Diresta recreates the wooden parts of the AK almost entirely from scratch. The Gat-Tar was made for three-time Grammy Award winner Wyclef Jean, who requested the...

Skill on Display at the 2015 World Long Range Shooting Championships

Wed, 08/19/2015 - 07:48

Many shooters have heard the words “Camp Perry” spoken with a sense of awe and reverence. After all, Camp Perry, Ohio is where all the serious competitive rifle and pistol shooters gather for best of the best bragging rights. I’m not talking action competitions like USPSA Action Pistol or 3-gun. I’m talking about classic marksmanship with rifles and pistols. Long-range targets, precision, hundreds of competitors wearing those heavy leather shooting jackets. You know, the real deal. Why the awe regarding Camp Perry? That’s where competitors do superhuman things...
