Video: Brutal Fight Between Two Mule Deer Bucks Ends in Fatality
Nature is sometimes hard to watch. Deer are not exactly known for their aggression, but that changes in the rut. During this time, bucks put the antlers they spent months growing to good use as sharp, multi-pointed weapons. Fights between rival bucks can often end in death, sometimes even for both bucks if they had the bad luck to get antlerlocked during the battle.
This video was recorded by hunters with MuleyBull Outfitters in Arizona. In it, an especially aggressive buck chases after another male and continuously attacks it until it falls over. According to the hunters, the deer later...
Photos: Brown Bear and Wolf Hunt Together, Share Food
A photographer in the wilderness of northern Finland has captured something amazing on camera: a young gray wolf and brown bear working cooperatively to hunt prey. Large predators rarely work together to do anything, and bears and wolves have been age-old enemies. Since both species share the same space, bears often find themselves in conflicts with wolves, especially over food. However, 56-year-old Lassi Rautiainen said he found at least two individuals on friendly terms.
"No one can know exactly why or how the young wolf and bear became friends," Rautiainen told the ...
Why Michigan is the Number-one State for Woodcock Hunting
Not long ago, when an internet ranking of states for overall livability put Michigan at the top and it listed a number of the state’s virtues, an odd thought popped into my mind: it didn’t even mention woodcock hunting.
No other state is so closely connected to the little needle-nosed game birds as Michigan. More woodcock nest and hatch in Michigan than anywhere else in the United States and when it comes to the hunting harvest, no other state comes near. Michigan is the woodcock-huntingest state in the union.
There are a variety of reasons, but certainly high on the list is the...
Boston’s 2015 Gun Buyback Nets Just One Firearm
After a windfall of more than 400 firearms collected in 2014, Boston's "Your Piece for Peace" gun buyback campaign netted just one firearm this year. According to city officials, the program is still funded and active, but participation has taken a noticeable dip despite a push by Mayor Martin J. Walsh to highlight the program. In an interview with The Boston Herald, Walsh pointed to a lack of promotion as the reason behind the program's low yield.
“We need people to...
Video: Seal Narrowly Escapes Great White Shark’s Aerial Attack
Shark 0, Seal 1: That's the final score of this epic aerial battle between a great white shark and a grey seal.
The Atlantic White Shark Conservatory and the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries were researching great white sharks off the coast of Cape Cod's Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge when they captured this incredible footage.
The seal jumped out of the water to avoid the shark's bite, but the white shark pursued him through the air. From what when can see in the video, the seal survived, assuming it made it safely to shore.

The BAREBOW! Chronicles: Dealing with the Defensive Perimeter
Considering the very satisfying, double success of my 2001 muskox hunt on Banks Island, I did not have any thought in my head of hunting the species again---until one day in the spring of 2005, when suddenly the phone on my desk rang. It was Mark Buehrer, of Bowhunting Safari Consultants, calling to ask if I’d be interested in taking part in a muskox hunt out of Resolute Bay which he was putting together for well-known bowhunter Tom Hoffman. Hoffman is unquestionably one of the top bowhunters...
Bear Attempts, Fails to Break into Home Through Cat Door
One black bear near Schweitzer Mountain just refused to believe it was too big for a cat door. Lured by the promise of Toblerone bars and brownie mix, Doug Harder said a bear visited his condo in Sandpoint, Idaho several times last week, attempting to break into his house through a tiny cat door.
"It came to the cat door Thursday night, trying again and again to get through, which is when I took the photo," Harder wrote on Facebook.
Harder had seen the bear before in May, when it and the rest of its family camped outside his...
Up a Creek with No Paddle? Never Again!
A young couple who are friends with my youngest daughter often hike, fish, and camp in remote areas of northeastern Minnesota’s Superior National Forest and Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
After one of their trips this summer, they posted photos of their chilly weekend, including a picture of two walleyes in the bottom of a canoe. I recognized Jenny You, 26, in the canoe’s bow, and assumed her fiancé, Nick Anderson, 31, was the cameraman in the stern. Also in the canoe was a long piece of bark and a thick stick with a pan lashed to one end.
Hmm. Suddenly, I was more...
Video: Man Accidentally Launches Arrow Through Glass Door
There are plenty of good reasons why you shouldn't practice archery inside your home. This is one of them.
In the video below, a man thought it would be a good idea to get a few shots in from the comfort and shade of his sunroom. Unfortunately, he forgot about the glass door that was between him and whatever he was aiming for on his lawn.
Predictably, the man finds out the hard way that most types of glass are not arrowproof.

5 Must-have Apps for Hunters
If you have a smartphone or tablet you probably already have a number of apps that you use in your hunting endeavors: weather apps, Google Earth, basic free mapping aids, and so on. Some of them are helpful but like most things, you get what you pay for---they can be very rudimentary. For hunters there are great apps that do more than you probably knew about. Here are five that are specifically designed to do things hunters need done, and do them well.
1. ScoutLook Weather
There are hundreds of weather apps, but this one stands above the rest in its applications for hunters. In addition to...
Quiz: Can You Identify the Bows Used in These Blockbuster Films?
It seems that bows and crossbows are gaining popularity in Hollywood, with films like The Hunger Games and The Avengers featuring bow-wielding heroines and heroes and zombie hunters like Daryl Dixon heading up acclaimed TV shows like The Walking Dead.
Hollywood isn't the biggest fan of accuracy, so don't be surprised to see bows used incorrectly on both film and TV. However, many movie prop masters still opt to acquire real---albeit heavily customized---bows from popular manufacturers.
Can you identify the bows used in these popular films?

Traditions Pursuit Ultralight Muzzleloader
I have had my current muzzleloader for years now. After it failed to fire at the largest buck I have ever seen, I decided I needed a change.
I spent the next few months shopping around and talking with a variety of people about the new styles and brands of blackpowder rifles available. A lot of information can be obtained this way and via the internet. However, I am a hands-on kind of guy. I need to pick up a gun and see for myself how well it is made. Window shopping does not allow for handling. Hands-on experience is definitely required to test balance and fit.
My oldest son and I...
Video: Wildebeest Turns the Tables on Lion in Seconds
In the blink of an eye, Africa's most notorious predator suddenly found itself on the opposite end of a chase thanks to a determined wildebeest. A tourist in Kenya's Maasai Mara park managed to catch this almost comical encounter on video.
The clip starts off predictably enough with a female lion chasing what it thought was lunch. Just seconds after the two animals run out of sight, the lion comes rushing back into view with the wildebeest hot at its heels.
Just like the tourist who took this video, we wonder what happened behind that corner. Perhaps it noticed the sudden and suspicious...
Young Tasmanian Anglers Catch Potential Junior World Record Tuna
Two brothers fishing off the coast of the Tasman Peninsula in Tasmania last Friday may have reeled in a pair of world record tuna. According to Stuart Nichols, the proud father of Sam, 12, and Toby, 10, the boys caught the fish near Hippolyte Rocks last week.
"I am in awe of my kids. I was just part of the most amazing experience. A double strike of barrels for Toby and Sam," wrote Nichols, who operates Personalized Sea Charters, on Facebook.
"These were really tough fish...
Will This Football-shaped Fish Call Revolutionize Angling?
There are duck calls and deer calls, but what about fish calls?
While the concept of a fish call has been explored before, a father-and-son team from Louisiana say they have designed the first throwable, floating, electronic fish attractor to hit the market, and they hope it will revolutionize fishing. The pair recently started a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, hoping to raise a modest $10,000 to produce the acorn-shaped devices, and as of Monday, have already exceeded their goal by attaining $43,000 in pledges.

Video: Man Fends Off Tiger with Weed Wacker in Abandoned Detroit Building
Some times you read a headline and think "that can't be real." This is one of those times, and yes, it's very real.
This weekend photos and videos of a tiger inside of Detroit's Packard plant started showing up on social media. One of those videos, which you can watch below, shows a man pushing back a tiger with a weed whacker. The event caused many people to question whether or not the footage was real or the work of a special-effects wizard.
Today The Detroit Free...
Florida Game Warden Survives Shootout by Jumping in Water
When a Florida wildlife officer found himself ambushed by gun-wielding assailants on a sailboat last Friday, he made the unusual choice to jump in the water and return fire while swimming. That decision may have very well saved his life.
"A routine vessel stop exploded into a shootout and an attack on one of our officers. While he was helpless in the water, he could have been left for dead but he had some luck on his side," stated the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC).
According to the agency, Officer David Brady was patrolling St....
Video: 3D-printed 9x19mm AR-style Pistol in Action
Firearm design in the 3D printing world sure has come a long way since Cody Wilson released the "Liberator" in May 2013. At the time, the single-shot .380 pistol was considered a breakthrough in what could be done with 3D printing. Now other enthusiasts have taken the same idea and improved upon it. Instead of using all printed parts, why not take the best of existing designs and meld them together? This type of thinking has led to 3D printing becoming a veritable playground for firearm...
Video: Terrified Australian Woman Gets Chased by Koala
High-speed chases work a little differently in Australia, and in this case they involve marsupials.
Ebony Churchill found herself the target of an unusual pursuit after a koala bear began chasing after her. She tried escaping on her ATV, but the koala kept pace and eventually caught her when she was stopped by a heard of cattle.
When the koala climbed up and latched on to the wheel of the ATV, Churchill can be heard saying "I don't know what I'm going to do now."
We can only assume she survived the ordeal, given that she was able to upload the video to...
