Smith & Wesson SW1911 Pro Series Subcompact

Wed, 08/12/2015 - 15:06

I have this near-irresistible urge to make a wisecrack about the mouse that roared, but I’d be hard pressed to call a subcompact .45 ACP handgun a “mouse” gun. In fact, the Smith & Wesson SW1911 Pro Series Subcompact is even a tad smaller than the original Colt Officer's model released back in 1985. That one sported a 3.5-inch barrel and an overall length of 7.5 inches. The SW1911 Subcompact has a three-inch barrel and overall...

Wed, 08/12/2015 - 13:00

Wildlife officers in Florida have captured and euthanized a 300-pound alligator involved in an attack on a woman last Saturday. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC), 37-year-old Rachel Lilienthal was swimming upstream in the Wekiva River near Wekiva Island Marina when she was confronted by an alligator. At the time, she was swimming away from the crowded beach and there were other visitors in the water. "Lilienthal was bitten at least twice and her right arm was severed above the elbow....

Yellowstone Grizzly Bear Kills Hiker in Suspected Predatory Attack

Wed, 08/12/2015 - 11:10

Yellowstone park rangers reported a gruesome discovery last week after the body of a 63-year-old hiker was discovered in the vicinity of Elephant Back Loop Trail near Lake Village. Park officials confirmed the man's identity as Lance Crosby of Billings, Montana, a seasoned hiker. Crosby previously lived in Yellowstone and worked with several of the park's medical clinics in the past. An examination of his body and the surrounding area suggested that he was attacked by at least one grizzly bear and was carried off to be consumed, a sign that points to the attack being predatory rather than...

Photos: Black Bear Mistakes Fake Deer for the Real Deal

Wed, 08/12/2015 - 10:05

Talk about disappointment. This black bear in North Brookfield, Massachusetts probably thought it hit the jackpot when it managed to surprise a buck in someone's backyard. Instead of hauling off a week's supply of venison, though, it merely got a mouthful of self-healing foam instead. The photos were taken by ERA Key Realty Services agent Darlene Eager during a listing appointment last Saturday. // Posted by ERA Key Realty Services Spencer MA on Read more »

“Largest Great White Ever Recorded” Circles Divers in New Footage

Wed, 08/12/2015 - 07:58

The "biggest shark ever filmed" doesn't appear to have gotten any smaller between his two major social media appearances so far. At least, that appears to be the case in new footage released by marine biologist Mauricio Hoyos Padilla early Monday morning. The brief clip shows Deep Blue, a nearly 20-foot-long great white shark, swimming around two shark-proof cages off the coast of Mexico's Guadalupe Island in the Pacific Ocean. At one point Deep Blue skims vertically past a diver outside a cage, giving us some perspective on how truly massive she is. // Read more »

Photos: 20 Awesome Gun Rooms You Should Be Jealous Of

Wed, 08/12/2015 - 06:58

What does your gun room look like? Let's face it, a lot of us don't have enough firearms to warrant giving them their own room---not to mention giving up valuable house space! However, that doesn't mean we can't plan for when that day comes. Here are 20 innovative, luxurious, or just practical gun rooms that you can take notes from. Some look comfy enough to relax in while you drink a glass of single malt scotch whisky---if you have one of these rooms, you can probably afford some high-end Macallan---while others are little more than cabinets or corners stuffed full of guns. What do you...

13 of the Best AR Triggers Available Today

Tue, 08/11/2015 - 15:41

I test several ARs over the course of any given year, which provides an opportunity to use all kinds of triggers. They range from dismal to game-changing.  Much of my focus is tactical or self-defense use, but I've also tested several competition rifles. Combined with the fact that I've built numerous ARs for various uses, I've established a solid baseline of what makes a good trigger. Swapping a standard or "mil-spec" trigger for an aftermarket often facilitates better accuracy. They won’t make your rifle more accurate but they will allow most people to shoot more...

A woman in Kimberly, British Columbia says she is thankful that her family is safe after a break-in by a grizzly bear that resulted in it being shot dead. WARNING: The article contains an image further below that some might consider graphic. Continue at your own discretion. Early Sunday morning, Niki Traverse was jolted awake by the sound of her dogs barking, and when she got up to investigate the source of their irritation, she found herself face-to-face with a male grizzly in her kitchen. Video: Little Girl Has the Best Possible Reaction to Shooting a Gun

Tue, 08/11/2015 - 15:15

Teaching your children about firearm safety is always a good idea. It's a bonus if they happen to fall in love with shooting sports. The little girl in this video needed no convincing as she clearly loves guns! She probably needs a few more years to grow into the .22 rifle she's shooting in the video, but the "it's better than picking flowers" tells us she is going to be a shooter for a long time. // "Better than picking flowers" ;) Posted by Martha Hubbard Reynolds on Friday, August 15, 2014 ...

Video: Hunter Gets Close Enough to Bedded Mule Deer to Wake It Up

Tue, 08/11/2015 - 14:19

Rise and shine! This spot-and-stalk hunter managed to get the drop on a seemingly oblivious mule deer, and even had the opportunity to poke it with a tripod, sending the startled animal running for the hills. Not all spot-and-stalk hunts are successful, but hunters who have tried chasing game on foot often will say its their preferred method. Stalking requires skill, patience, and a great degree of stealth, which makes it appealing to those who prefer a different type of challenge. // Ever had a spot-and-stalk to match this? Tag a buddy who would STILL miss....

Off-duty Florida Detective Reels In $12 Million Package of Cocaine

Tue, 08/11/2015 - 13:17

What is the biggest catch you ever made in your life? For one Florida deputy, it was no fish, but rather a floating bundle of carefully-wrapped cocaine worth an estimated $12 million. According to Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell, an off-duty detective with his office was fishing 20 miles offshore last week when he happened upon 50 pounds of uncut cocaine. "That amount of cocaine has a current street value of $2.5 million before it's cut. Once it's cut, it can be anywhere between 10 to 12 million dollars street value," Prummell said in a video released by his office, which you can...

Tue, 08/11/2015 - 11:25

On Monday, the Seattle City Council voted unanimously to pass what city leaders have termed a "gun violence" tax on firearms and ammunition, as well as provisions for the mandatory reporting of lost or stolen guns. The new city ordinance places a $25 tax on each new firearm purchased and a five-cent tax on every round of ammunition---except .22 LR, which will carry a two cent tax. "Every day, the general public pays the enormous cost of gun violence," said Council President Tim Burgess, who introduced the proposal....

Video: Bald Eagle Dive Bombs Surprised Grizzly

Tue, 08/11/2015 - 10:02

Who would win in a fight between a grizzly bear and a bald eagle? The bear would certainly have an overwhelming advantage when it comes to sheer brawn, but eagles have razor-sharp claws, excellent aim, and can fly. However, this hypothetical situation is rendered somewhat moot due to the fact that eagles and bears rarely get into fights. They simply have no reason to. Unless we are talking about two football teams from Chicago and Philly, bears and eagles have very little to do with one another and will generally avoid each other if they can. Actually, that might apply for the teams as...

Tue, 08/11/2015 - 07:12

One of these animals is best left alone unless you are absolutely starving. Guess which one. This week we are going to continue our breakdown of trapping and eating small game for survival, and what to look out for before digging into a nice raccoon stew. Skunks, groundhogs, and raccoons can be considered a bit more exotic than standard small game fare like squirrels and rabbits. They also have a reputation for being gamey and have an unfamiliar texture. As we touched on in the Read more »

Video: Shark Tries Its Hardest to Jump into Angler’s Boat

Mon, 08/10/2015 - 15:22

Mako sharks are among the fastest of all shark species, and they are also one of the most acrobatic. These torpedo-shaped fish have been observed jumping more than 30 feet in the air, and their seemingly inexhaustible stamina has made them a highly sought-after game fish. Sometimes, anglers almost get the sense that the sharks are aiming straight for them. According to anglers Ward Kollar and Rick Senske, this 500-pound mako certainly seemed intent on hopping aboard their ship. The fishermen only narrowly escaped this would-be stowaway after Senske---who was operating the camera---put the...

Video: Machinist Creates Inexpensive AR-15 Sentry Gun

Mon, 08/10/2015 - 15:16

YouTuber NYC CNC just created one of the most advanced "sentry guns" we have ever seen. Even more impressive is that fact that excluding the gun and mount, about $150 of electronics were used in this entire project! The creator used an Arduino computer and a homemade camera to control the targeting system. The sentry gun has the ability to target based on color, shape, and distance at the moment. Possible future upgrades to the system include thermal targeting and much more. For safety and legal reasons the trigger on...

Mon, 08/10/2015 - 11:36

A tourist vacationing near South Carolina's Black Mountain range claims he saw something resembling Bigfoot last Thursday, and he managed to capture the entire "encounter" on video. Eric Walters told WBTV that he had rented a cabin off North Carolina Highway 9 last week and was enjoying a quiet stay in the woods with his wife and friends. At the time, his biggest concern was not mythical creatures, but bears. "Our neighbors told us there was some bear activity and to be cautious," he...

Video: Fisherman Nails Drone with an Out-of-this-world Cast

Mon, 08/10/2015 - 10:03

We've heard about a drone being taken out by a shotgun, but how about a fishing pole? A drone photographer was filming San Diego's Pacific Pier when something unexpected happened. One of the anglers on the pier cast his line at the drone with a wind up reminiscent of a Major League pitcher. The cast hit the drone and the line quickly became tangled in the rotor forcing it to make an emergency landing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrzU-MMBGIM&feature=youtu.be...
