Video: Mama Deer Swarmed at Feeding Time by Fawns
Being a mother can be stressful, no matter the species. For deer, fawns can walk at birth and are almost scentless, which greatly helps in avoiding predators. However, raising one can still be a handful. Raising four, well, takes a lot of dedication.
A trail camera at the right place and right time captured this nursing doe feeding one of her fawns. Their quiet bonding time is quickly interrupted by her other offspring, who rush in and jostle for position as they try to feed, obviously overwhelming their mother.
If it's any consolation for the doe, at least she only has to put up with...
Strategies for Preseason Scent Control
Controlling human odor is a multi-billion dollar subset of the hunting industry. Many people are in search of that mythical “scent elimination” nirvana which, when found, will forever end the frustrations of a deer smelling them and reacting in their typical negative way.
Of course, total scent elimination is a myth and probably always will be, but each year sportsmen and women set out in search of products and strategies that they hope will at least reduce their scent impact while hunting. There are some great scent-killing products that have been shown through scientific...
Michigan’s Summertime Pike Fishing Can’t Be Beat
There used to be a common belief among pike anglers that the critters “lose their teeth” in the summer.
There’s no doubt that pike are a little harder to come by during the dog days. But it isn’t because they stop eating. Truth is, pike head deep in the summer in search of cooler water. They are no longer in the shallow weed beds where anglers can find them three other seasons of the year.
But anglers who understand where to find pike (on deep contour lines or on the outside of the deepest weed beds) can continue to take pike when the heat is on. And they’ll be glad they...
Michigan Officials Announce Second Quillback Record in Less Than a Month
Records are meant to be broken, but Michigan wildlife officials hardly expected this one to be broken---again---so soon. It took less than a month after Nashville bowfisherman Garret Reid took his record quillback carpsucker for it to be eclipsed by an even bigger fish. According to the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Blake Wilson of Lake Ann arrowed a 9.42-pound carpsucker in Hardy Dam Pond on July 16. The fish measured 25 inches long and weighed almost a pound more than Reid's catch.
“This is...
Montana Asian Carp Scare Determined to Be a Hoax
In July, officials with the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) and US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) were notified of a threat to release Asian carp into the state's waters. Numerous concerned citizens contacted wildlife officials after an ad posted on Craiglist detailed the release of Asian carp into at least one Montana lake, and the planned release of more. A subsequent investigation by the FWP and USFWS determined that the ad was just a mean-spirited hoax.
According to a copy of the ad obtained by Read more »
The World’s Most Urban Coyotes Now Being Tracked
Deep in the hustle and bustle of the second most populated city in the US, a small group of coyotes are thriving. Somehow, these wild and adaptable creatures have managed to eke out a living in Los Angeles. They even managed to evade capture, at least until recently. The National Park Service (NPS) announced last month that two infamous coyotes---a female with five pups and a male---have been captured near the city's downtown. Instead of releasing the animals back into the wild however, NPS biologists decided that there was no better...
Video: Great White Does Its Best Impersonation of ‘Sharknado’
This shark probably knew it looked cool.
This amazing footage was taken, fittingly, by the team of White Shark Video during a trip to Mossel Bay in South Africa. Sharks don't usually a have a reputation for being curious, but the great whites living near Mossel Bay are actually fairly inquisitive creatures and come out often to greet ships. Since they have no hands, the sharks satisfy their curiosity by "mouthing" interesting objects, essentially just biting everything softly. During one trip, the White Shark Video crew were training their interns when one shark decided to show off and...
Potential World Record Northern Snakehead Eaten in Maryland
It seems that there are not only more snakeheads in Maryland, they are also getting bigger. According to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Dan Moon of Woodbridge, Virginia caught an absolutely massive 18.8-pound snakehead off the Potomac River on June 20. At that weight, Moon's catch not only beat out the current state record, but also the all-tackle world record recognized by the International Game Fish Association (IGFA). Unfortunately, the angler could not find a certified scale and ate...
Video: Would You Go Fishing on This Ice Carousel?
What do you get when you have some ice, a bunch of chainsaws, a boat motor, and a creative spirit? Well, either you have the world's weirdest ice carving competition, or you get this carousel on ice.
This spinning disc was created in Latvia earlier this year, and it actually looks like a lot of fun. Using a combination of chainsaws and ice chisels, these guys carve a circle out of the ice and than employ a boat motor to rotate the entire thing. What completes the experience is the inclusion of a picnic table and some skates. They could have even started fishing from the platform, although...
Ted Nugent One of Many to Sign Up for Florida’s Inaugural Bear Hunt
Florida's first black bear hunt in 21 years is proving to be a big hit, despite a controversial start and at least one lawsuit against the state for holding the hunt. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), more than 1,100 special-use permits have been sold as of Wednesday, with the majority being bought as soon as the agency opened up licenses for sale. Among the first non-resident to sign up for the hunt was none other than rocker Ted Nugent, an avid hunter and advocate for hunting rights.
"The reason there hasn't been a bear season until now---even after...
Country Star Luke Bryan Releases Outdoor-themed Album ‘Kill The Lights’
Country superstar and avid outdoorsman Luke Bryan released his new album, Kill The Lights, earlier today. The fifth studio album by the 39-year-old Georgia native, Kill The Lights touches more on Bryan's passion for hunting, fishing, and the great outdoors than previous works.
The singer released the first single from the album, "Kick the Dust Up," in mid-May and it has already climbed to the top of the Media Base and Billboard charts, becoming the fastest-rising single in his career.
With singles like "Huntin', Fishin', and Lovin' Every Day," Bryan's Read more »
Quiz: Can You Guess the Prices of the World’s Most Expensive Guns?
Buying one of these guns not only requires a large bank account, but also state-of-the-art security and preferably a private museum to hide it. These firearms rake in the big bucks not because of their construction, or because of any fancy engravings, but because of their historical provenance.
Can you guess how much they were sold for at auction? Hint: they're all big numbers.
Can you imagine using the same shotgun carried by Teddy Roosevelt during his historic Smithsonian expedition in Africa? Or wielding the same gun that put an end to the infamous bandit Jesse James. Some of these...
Video: The Boone and Crockett Club on Ethical Hunting
Hunters are often asked why they hunt, but how they hunt is just as important. Hunting ethics have always been a strong part of what it means to be a hunter, but it has never been as necessary as it is now. It is hard to ignore the current controversies in the hunting world today, where sportsmen and women often find themselves under attack. The rhetoric from the anti-hunting crowd seems to shout out all reason, and that's why many hunters let their actions speak for who they are, not their words.
Recently, the Boone and Crockett Club released a video reiterating the...

Oddly Soothing Video Shows You How to Make a Knife from an Old Wrench
Take a couple minutes to relax and watch this knife being made.
The combination of sounds and imagery in this video might make this one of the most interesting knife-making videos on YouTube. This beautiful knife was made from an old open-end wrench by the famous YouTube knife maker Trollskyy.
He obviously made the creation of this knife look much easier than it really is through a combination of skill and video editing. Still, it would be really nice if you could make or buy one of these for...
California Officials Report Second Wolf Sighting in 90 Years
Officials from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) announced earlier this week that there is evidence suggesting a wolf living somewhere in Siskiyou County. If this is true, it would only be California's second visiting gray wolf in nearly 90 years.
In late 2011, a male wolf named OR-7 made headlines after it became the first wolf to enter The Golden State in nearly a century. OR-7 has since...
Video: Smith & Wesson 586 Revolver vs. Watermelon and More
As we scientifically proved last week, shooting fruit with expanding ammunition is quite awesome. Video: Firing an SVD Dragunov Sniper Rifle and AK-74 in Slow Motion
The Russian-designed Dragunov rifle is one of the most recognizable firearms in existence---its name and silhouette are almost as well-known as those of the AK and AR-15. However, there isn't a wealth of information available on Dragunovs in the West, let alone slow-motion footage of them in action. Luckily, the OHub Labs team has good friends in gun places, and we were able to secure access to a Chinese-made Dragunov variant for a recent video shoot.
You can see that rifle in action below. We also brought out a Bulgarian-made AKS-74 clone and a heavily modified Krebs Custom Vepr in...
Seattle Nears Decision on “Gun Violence” Tax for Firearms, Ammo
The Seattle City Council will soon vote on a city ordinance that could add an additional tax on guns and ammunition, a move that is heavily opposed by both firearm retailers and gun owners. Some, like Sergey Solyanik, say the new tax will drive him out of town.
“I feel outraged, actually, and not really as gun owner or gun dealer, but as a citizen of Seattle,” Solyanik, the owner of Precise Shooter, told KIRO 7.
The proposal came from Seattle City Council President Tim Burgess, who ostensibly...
Video: Alligator Steals Florida Angler’s Fish
Why is everything out to steal your fish?
When you're fishing in predator infested waters, that's just part of the game. This young angler frantically tries to reel in a tarpon while an alligator homes in for the kill. Unfortunately for the angler, the alligator almost casually swallows up the tarpon after a few seconds of sniffing around.
At one point the predator was referred to as a crocodile, and while Florida does have a small population of American crocodiles, it is unlikely to have been the culprit. Despite the low quality of the video, you can make out the rounded snout that is...
