The Big Man’s Guide to Concealed Carry

Thu, 08/06/2015 - 09:41

Some of us believe that brown sugar and cinnamon Pop-Tarts contain all four food groups. Some of us work out by watching American Ninja Warrior on TV. And some of us are just born this way. Yes, I’m talking about us guys that are on the larger side of large. Or portly. Or maybe just big-boned. However you define it, size and shape have a big impact on concealed carry. Sometimes, size is better, as there is more room to carry a concealed gun. Sometimes, size is a drawback, but that’s usually when volume and shape create unusual combinations, like beer bellies. Whatever the...

Video: How to Light a Fire with One Round of Ammo

Thu, 08/06/2015 - 07:43

Don't have a lighter, but have a round of 5.56mm in your pocket? Your're in luck because that's all you need to start a fire---and it doesn't involve shooting that round! As the video demonstrates, you can start a fire or light a firework with a single unfired round of centerfire ammunition. First, pull the bullet and dump the powder out. Then strike the primer on a hard surface and the residual powder and primer are enough to light whatever flammable materiel is in the cartridge neck. This trick could come in handy in a survival situation, or if you just want to show off your...

Video: Florida Man Catches Fish in the Middle of Flooded Sidewalk

Wed, 08/05/2015 - 17:04

It seems that even in difficult situations Floridians know how to have fun. ABC Action News was broadcasting from a flooded street in Tampa earlier this week when a man came into view who appeared to be grasping for something in the water. After struggling for a few seconds, the man successfully pulled a fish out of the water covering a sidewalk. Proud of his catch, he ran over to a bystander and posed for a quick picture before the fish squirmed out of his hands. Surprisingly enough, he was not the only person attempting to make the best of...

Video: Is This “Spider Car” the Ultimate ATV?

Wed, 08/05/2015 - 15:49

Meet the Swincar, an all-terrain vehicle that has been described by some as a "mechanical spider on wheels." Despite that description, the Swincar only has four wheels and looks more like a traditional buggy than a spider. However, each wheel has its own electric hub motor and suspension, using spider-like limbs for unparalleled maneuverability. "Swincar E-Spider was designed to bring new sensations thanks to its exceptional agility off-road. Its revolutionary kinematic allows tilt shift, tilt correction and most extreme cross axles," stated its creators on YouTube. "The Electric motors on...

Firearm collectors and enthusiasts were struck by a bombshell recently when Rock Island Auction Company (RIAC) revealed the catalog for its September Premiere Auction, which includes an M1 Garand once owned by President John F. Kennedy. Touted as one of the "most historically significant" M1 Garand rifles to ever be put up for auction, the gun was acquired by Kennedy during his time as a senator through the Director of Civilian Marksmanship (DCM). "Since this rifle was issued to Senator Kennedy in 1959, well before he was elected to the...

Wed, 08/05/2015 - 13:32

Merely touching this nonnative plant will give you blisters and long-lasting scars, but if you are unfortunate enough to rub some of its sap in your eyes, you will go blind---permanently. It is called the giant hogweed, and it is considered an extreme public health hazard. Officials in Calhoun County, Michigan are warning residents to avoid and report any sightings of the plant after a giant hogweed was discovered near Battle Creek. The plant has since been removed from the area, but health officials fear that more may be nearby. “It’s not deadly but it can certainly cause you an awful...

Video: Man Lets Alligator Snapping Turtle Bite His Arm

Wed, 08/05/2015 - 12:05

This is probably a stupid idea. Adventurer and animal expert Coyote Peterson has had a lot of close encounters with wild animals, but letting an alligator snapping turtle bite his arm may be one of his most questionable decisions. Alligator snapping turtles are widely feared for their intimidating beaks and the crushing power of their bite. Granted, experts say that these turtles can only bite about as hard as humans---but humans can bite very hard. More than enough to sheer off a few fingers. Peterson tests out this turtle's biting power by first feeding it a drumstick, which...

Logging Engineer Fights Off Mother Grizzly with Work Boots

Wed, 08/05/2015 - 10:52

For his job, Vancouver logging engineer George Knoll wears a heavy set of spiked work boots. While they're not exactly the most practical or comfortable shoes for a long hike in the wilderness, those boots may have very well saved his life when he was confronted by a grizzly bear last month. Knoll was flagging trees to be cut down near Bella Bella in British Columbia when he ran across a mother bear and her cub. With almost no warning, the grizzly charged Knoll from the brush and tackled him, raking the man with its sharp claws and tearing chunks of flesh from his arms and back. "I...

The Beauty of the Ugly Stik Elite Spinning Combo

Wed, 08/05/2015 - 10:13

Like the fish they catch, some fishing rods take on a legendary status. In my family, Ugly Stik occupies that spot. More fish have been caught by members of my family using an Ugly Stik than any other brand---and we’ve caught a lot of fish. My family's long history with Ugly Stik goes all the way back to summers at my uncle’s house in Alaska. His son and I would spend countless hours using an Ugly Stik rod and a Mitchell reel to catch sockeye salmon. During one long but fun day, we each caught and released in excess of 70 salmon in the eight- to 12-pound range. Now jump ahead to...

Texas Man Apparently Injured by Bullet Ricocheting off Armadillo

Wed, 08/05/2015 - 07:17

Armadillos have a reputation for shooting mother-in-laws, but this armadillo seems to be the first to "fire back" at the shooter. Samuel Ebert of Marietta, Texas spotted an armadillo in his yard at 3:00 a.m. last Thursday, so he decided to grab his gun an dispatch the animal. According to Cass County Sheriff Larry Rowe, "[Ebert] went outside and took his .38 revolver and shot three times at the armadillo." One of the bullets allegedly ricocheted off the thick armor of the...

Tue, 08/04/2015 - 15:58

Is this the most badass blackbird of all time? The US Department of the Interior posted this incredible picture of a red-winged blackbird hitching a ride on a red-tailed hawk. The stunning photo was taken by Mike White while visiting the Boyer Chute National Wildlife Refuge. Red-winged blackbirds are know to dive-bomb raptors, but this behavior is exceptionally rare. While we can't tell how long the blackbird was on the hawk's back, that's still a seriously brave little bird.

If you've ever been sprayed or even gotten a whiff of what an angry skunk smells like, then you know it's not an exaggeration to call this officer brave. According to the Rochester, Michigan Police Department, Officer Merlin Taylor responded to a call on Sunday to aid a distressed animal in the street. Taylor arrived to find that it was a young skunk running around in circles, with a yogurt cup stuck firmly on its head. "Luckily baby skunks can't spray like adults! Well done Officer Taylor!" ATF: Gun Production Doubled During Obama Presidency

Tue, 08/04/2015 - 13:34

Despite President Barack Obama's push for greater gun control measures, it would seem that firearm production has boomed during his administration. The ATF recently released its "2015 Firearms Commerce in the United States Annual Statistical Update," in which the agency pointed out a nearly 140 percent increase in gun production from 2008 to 2013, the last year with available statistics. "In 2010, more than 5.4 million firearms were manufactured. That number climbed to more than 10.8 million in 2013,"...

Tue, 08/04/2015 - 13:05

At least three major US airlines---Delta, American, and United---have announced this week that they will no longer be shipping certain big game trophies. The airlines have not yet confirmed whether the decision had any connection to the death of Cecil the lion, which was killed by an American tourist last month. The airlines did say that the new policy has already gone into effect. "Effective immediately, Delta will officially ban shipment of all lion, leopard, elephant,...

The K31 Rifle: Quality Swiss Craftsmanship at a Budget Rifle Price

Tue, 08/04/2015 - 10:40

The saying “you get what you pay for” is true of most purchases that are made today. If I buy cheap, I can generally expect cheap parts and poor craftsmanship. However, this proved not the case with a Swiss K31 rifle I recently acquired. I was searching for a good surplus rifle, and the K31 quickly caught my attention. I found what I was looking for at AIM Surplus (note that are currently sold out of K31s), where a K31 with a birch stock ran only $299. For that price, I was skeptical---but nearly everything I read about the rifle was...

Video: Ted Cruz Cooks Bacon with an AR-15

Tue, 08/04/2015 - 10:12

Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz is making the news again (after recent weeks dominated by fellow front runner Donald Trump), and this time it's not because of his outspoken stance on the economy or other political issues, but rather his favorite method of cooking bacon. "There are few things I enjoy more, than on weekends cooking breakfast with the family. Of course in Texas, we cook bacon a little bit differently than most folks," the Senator said in a video on YouTube. Most folks don't fry their bacon at the range, so we'd say that he is right. Armed with an AR-15, some...

Survival Scenario Snacks: Rabbits, Squirrels, and Opossums

Tue, 08/04/2015 - 07:41

Which one of these tastes most like chicken? The answer is of course that none of them even taste anything remotely like chicken. That doesn't mean they necessarily taste awful, though. With the right seasonings and a little bit of luck, all three of these critters can be the favorite dish in any backyard barbecue. The bad news is that if you're hunting them down as sustenance in the wild, they most likely won't go easy on your taste buds. This week we are going to discuss the harvest of small game such as rabbits, squirrels, and opossums for emergency wilderness survival. As we touched...
