PLANO Bucks Anti-Spinnerbait Movement with Common Sense Storage
If you read today’s fishing magazines, you’d think the spinnerbait was dead. Yet, while everybody’s throwing swim jigs in lieu of the old standby, blades are looking pretty new again to conditioned fish. Just ask KVD. He still carries dozens for running and gunning, burning over and through cover and commanding big aggression strikes.
And if bass anglers across the country were honest, they’d tell you the same thing: spinnerbaits rock.
But storing them and other baits sporting treble hooks – crankbaits, chatterbaits and the like? Not so much.
Truth be known, the ubiquitous...

Pursuing Pike on a Michigan Inland Lake
When I was a lad, northern pike were among the most popular game fish here in Michigan, often mentioned in tandem with bass. Northerns were the clear favorite of those who wanted to catch big fish. Except for those few muskies that were being caught in those days, pike were all that.
Over the decades, the popularity of pike declined, for a number of reasons---including the fact that they were no longer the big fish in the pond. Once Michigan’s Great Lakes salmon program got cooking in the ‘60s, it became common for anglers to tussle with fish weighing in the double digits....

Video: Black Bear Mom Rescues Cub from Highway
Motorists driving through Kootenay National Park in the Canadian Rockies witnessed a tense situation when one black bear cub found itself stranded on the highway. Unable to climb the concrete partition---and oblivious to the large hole nearby---the cub looks to its mother for assistance. According to the Daily Mail, the female bear was as equally nervous before snatching the cub up by its head.
"It was a very amazing sight to see," said...
Chipotle Says No to Guns in Stores after Open Carry Demonstrations
Representatives from the Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurant chain announced to media earlier this week that they are encouraging customers to leave their firearms at home. According to the company, the decision was made after several open carry advocates brought rifles into a downtown Dallas location over the weekend.
"Recently participants from an 'open carry' demonstration in Texas brought guns (including military-style assault rifles) into one of our restaurants, causing many of our customers anxiety and discomfort. Because of this, we are respectfully asking that customers not bring guns...
Strange, Rarely Seen Fish Found on East Coast
Two rarely seen---and rather strange-looking---fish were found last week in North Carolina and Florida. Anglers fishing off Pensacola Beach pulled in an eel-like jellynose, while visitors to Jennette's Pier in Nags Head, North Carolina found a sinister-looking lancetfish on the shore.
"Have you ever seen anything like it?" asked the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute on its Facebook page.
Even experts there had trouble identifying the jellynose. It is a mystery how this deep-water creature found its way to the shallow...
Thirty Years Later, Helgeland Still Drives “Deer & Turkey Expos”
Few deer hunters recognize Glenn Helgeland even when standing beside him at one of the famous Deer & Turkey Expos he has run the past 30 years, mostly in the Upper Midwest.
These days, of course, the events are referred to as Field & Stream Deer & Turkey Expos, because Helgeland sold his popular deer shows in December 2011 to the Bonnier Corporation, the parent company of Field & Stream and Outdoor Life magazines. As part of the sale, Helgeland, 71, of Mequon, Wisconsin, continues to produce these events, which are held each winter and spring in...
West Virginia Announces New State Record Rainbow Trout
Eric Files, Sr. was fishing for sunfish in West Virginia's Berkeley County on April 30, but what he ended up with was a 19.40-pound, 33.11-inch state record rainbow trout. The fish has now been confirmed by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (DNR) to be the largest rainbow trout caught in the state so far.
Files' fish beat both the old records for the length and weight, besting a 17.31-pound trout caught by Tony Corbin in 2013 and a 31.7-inch fish landed by John P. Arnett in 1993. Rainbow trout can be found in most of...
Fishing for Golf Course Bluegills
Some of the best bluegill fishing in America may be within easy walking distance of your house---and possibly not even outside your subdivision.
Quality golf courses are well-fertilized. When the fertilizer from the greens and the fairways washes into golf course lakes and ponds, that fertilizer adds plenty of nutrition to grow big bass and bluegills in ponds that are rarely fished. Most golf courses close down one day per week for maintenance. You may be able to gain permission to fish in golf course waters that usually are stocked with both bass and bluegills.
“John, you have to...
Being a Digital Delinquent in the Great Outdoors
It wasn’t that long ago that we didn’t have fancy smartphones. I’ve talked about them before and will keep on talking about them because let’s face it, we’re all digital delinquents these days---we’re all addicted to our phones.
It is nice to put them away for a while, but I’m always on the lookout for a different way to use or protect my phone when I’m outdoors. With so many apps and other services, it’s easy to see why they're valuable.
Keep it safe
So right off the bat, you need a good case for your expensive phone if you’re going to be a digital outdoorsperson....
Pointers at Prepping for 3-Gun Season
There’s no denying that 3-Gun competitions are growing in popularity and springing up at gun ranges across America. Using a pistol, rifle and shotgun to shoot through challenges and multiple targets at varying distances is a great way to improve your shooting skills while having fun.
Here are some pointers for performing better on the 3-Gun range by Daniel Horner, a two time winner of the nation’s top 3-Gun challenge—Crimson Trace’s coveted Midnight 3-Gun Invitational (M3GI).
“I use the same gear all year long, so when it comes time for this match (the M3GI), I just adapt the...
