MidwayUSA’s Larry’s Short Stories – the Missouri Spring Trifecta

Wed, 05/14/2014 - 07:54

It may be quite a stretch, for some folks, as the word “Trifecta” is applied to spring turkey hunting in Missouri – especially for those who know horse racing; but for any hunter who’s been fortunate enough to shoot a gobbler during Missouri’s spring turkey season, then pick a batch of mushrooms, and finally to find an arrowhead – well, for them at least, using the word Trifecta may not seem such a stretch. It was the twelfth day of the 21 day turkey season, but only my fourth morning in the woods; the NRA always seems to schedule their annual meetings during this time.  In my...

While the delayed-blowback mode of operation dates to a Pedersen design from the end of World War I, the R51 is a thoroughly modern offering. See how it performs in Richard Mann’s hands as he puts it through numerous torture tests. If home-defense considerations are what you’re after, we have a look at the FNH-USA P-12 pump-action shotgun. Based on the robust Winchester Super X Pump,...

May and the Timing of the Whitetail Rut

Wed, 05/14/2014 - 07:23

There are many theories about the timing of the whitetail rut. In some years, it seems like the rut breaks loose all at once, and in other years, hunters will say it’s a “trickle rut” because they do not see the intense rutting activity. Books have been written about the impact of moon phases on deer breeding activity, and some hunters are religious about planning their hunts around the correct moon phase for what they believe will be the best activity periods for rutting bucks. Several studies on the movements of radio-collared and GPS-tracked deer have cast considerable doubt on any...

His target was a humpback whale calf, and his goal was to free it from the trap lines that it was entangled in. “We watched the calf for about 15 minutes and when it became clear it wasn’t getting itself free, I dove in without a second thought," Brogan told The West Australian. The crew first spotted the whale off...
