Oklahoma Reward Poster in Murder Trial Features GLOCK Logo

Mon, 02/03/2014 - 17:00

I have to admit being taken aback by this reward poster on the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation website.  I can see the utility in grabbing a graphic from the Internet, that’s unlikely to draw a complaint from the owner. It may even be in the public domain. But I find the juxtaposition of GLOCK Perfection with a double child murder case to be a little disturbing . . .

The pistol may be useful in the trial of Kevin Sweat, who has given a confession of sorts. A hearing has been scheduled to determine if the video of the confession will be allow

How Journalists Learn to Hate Your Firearms Freedom (And What You Can Do About It)

Mon, 02/03/2014 - 16:00

“In order to achieve national standards for gun control our leaders cannot continue to frame the issue in terms of political expediency,” Marda Dunsky writes at aljazeera.com. “As a people, Americans cannot continue to frame the issue in terms of narrowly defined freedoms. We have to think the unthinkable and recast the gun-control debate in personal terms: As things stand now, almost any of us can find ourselves in a nightmare scenario in almost any public place at almost any time. The statistical probability of that happening is not what matters. What matters is that it can and

Gear Review: Off the Grid Concepts MKI Holster

Mon, 02/03/2014 - 15:00

By Christopher Bermudez

A little over three months ago, I started seriously looking for a dedicated appendix carry holster. Before I go any further, this is an article designed to tell you about a holster, not to change your mind about appendix carry. So if you want to learn more about a holster maker with great customer service, great kydex, and competitive pricing, read on. If you want to tell me how carrying in the appendix position is going to cause damage to my genitals or femoral artery, go watch a Brian LaMaster’s YouTube video, pat yourself on the back and post something to that effect below. (I actually find a lot of what Mr. LaMaster has to say to be insightful and spot-on, but I disagree with him on appendix carry so I will most likely die in a gunfight.) . . .

But back to that holster. I

Thompson Trade Troubles Town

Mon, 02/03/2014 - 13:00

When politicians attempt to ban things via regulations and taxes, weird results usually follow. In the case of automatic firearms, the stage was set by the enactment of the bizarre National Firearms Act (NFA) of 1934, which was upheld by the infamous U.S. v. Miller decision. Under the NFA, full-auto firearms have to be registered with the federal government and a $200 tax paid. The “tax” at the time of enactment was the equivalent of $4,000 today, on items that varied in value from 1/10th the amount of the tax to roughly same amount for a Thompson sub machine gun . . .

The crafters of the NFA admitted that the amount was a way to subvert the Second Amendment through taxation rather than an outright ban. Subsequent Supreme Co

Question of the Day: Are Gun Control Advocates Cowards?

Mon, 02/03/2014 - 12:00

In my post Random Thoughts About The Superbowl and Guns, I wrote than an armed populace gives society a fighting chance against terrorists. That got me thinking: why would gun control advocates deny Americans a fighting chance against bad guys? Because they believe The People of The Gun aren’t trained enough to defend their lives and other innocent life – despite tens of thousands of successful defensive gun uses per year? That’s partly it. The deeper truth: gun control advocates don’t believe in fighting back with lethal force, personally. That’s law enforcement’s job. Or, in the case of the elite, bodyguards. What’s up with that? I can’t come up with any explanation save one: they’re cowards. Which would also explain th

Video: Machine Gun Helicopter Hog Hunting

Mon, 02/03/2014 - 11:00

OK, technically and legally speaking this isn’t hunting — its “herd depredation.” Hogs are a terrible nuisance in the Gulf coast area, and helicopter crews are the most effective way to eliminate the problem. One such company is HeliBacon, founded immediately after the practice was legalized a few years ago by a group of firearms enthusiasts who thought it would be an awesome thing to do and wanted to offer the best experience. It’s expensive ($750/hour), but they offer some of the most hog-infested fields and best toys out there to their clients. Unlimited ammo is included in the price of admission, and upgrades are available — such as machine guns (custom lowers with PWS piston-driven uppers). Coming soon: grenade launchers. Yes, grenade launchers. Because not only do they have a helicopter, but they’re an

New Yorkers Refrain from Ratting Out “Illegal Gun” Owners…For Now

Mon, 02/03/2014 - 10:00

“In February of 2012, 11 months before the state passed their stringent gun law known as the NY SAFE Act, a hotline was set up for people to call who thought they knew someone that possessed an illegal gun,’ cbsalbany.com reports. “If a person was arrested and convicted the tipster would receive a $500 reward.” So how’s that whole gun snitch thing workin’ out for ya? . . .

According to data from a Freedom of Information Law request, two years later there seems to be no interest in a person turning their neighbor in or most firearms are legally owned. In an

An Englishman Asks About U.S. Suppressor Law

Mon, 02/03/2014 - 09:00

At the SHOT Show I sat next to an Englishman who wrote for a UK hunting magazine. We talked about gun laws in Blighty and in the US, and the subject turned to gun mufflers, AKA silencers or suppressors. I was interested to learn that mufflers were relatively easy to obtain in the UK, and were in fact encouraged by the police. Having a suppressor for your rifle is considered, well, polite. A way to reduce noise pollution and avoid disturbing the neighbors. Virtually all air guns have suppressors. My new British friend turned to me and said: “I never have understood the United States regulation of suppressors?  What is the purpose of making them so hard to obtain or own?” . . .

I could not answer him.  The best speculation that I have found is that there was some mention of suppressors being used for poaching. Why else put suppressors

Quote of the Day: There’s An App for That Edition

Mon, 02/03/2014 - 08:00

“I don’t know of anyone in the Senate who wants to take guns away. But there’s this feeling of everything involving guns is sacred. A lot of lawmakers have become afraid of it. In the back of my mind, I’m worried I will be labeled anti-gun.” – South Carolina State Senator Thomas McElveen, SC politicians’ guns blazing this election season [at heraldonline.com]

Moms Demand Action Bully ABC to Keep Pro-Gun Voice Off ‘The View’

Sun, 02/02/2014 - 20:00

Dana Loesch works for TheBlazeTV. She’s about as pro-gun as it gets. So when news got out that she’d be co-hosting daytime gabfest The View this week on ABC’s nationally syndicated network, the Civilian Disarmament Industrial Complex collectively wigged out and started pulling every trick in the book to try and keep her off the air. It’s a strategy we’ve seen used before to try and keep our own Robert Farago off CNN, actually. Better to silence someone with whom you disagree than engaging in honest and open debate. And now they’re at it again . . .

Back in November, CNN reached out to Robert to come on a show and talk about the events of the day. Robert tweeted about it, and the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence immediately res

Arizona Concealed Carry Statistics Revealed

Sun, 02/02/2014 - 18:00

“These numbers reflect all transactions and the current status of permits, since the inception of the CCW program in Arizona on September 8, 1994,” azdps.gov‘s website informs above concealed carry stats revealed today. “Please note, these numbers do not reflect changes, such as a permit that was suspended and later reinstated.” Regardless, we’re looking at 212k permits in a state with some six

Random Thoughts About Super Bowl Terrorism and Guns

Sun, 02/02/2014 - 16:00

There are a number of books about a terrorist attack on the Super Bowl. Tom Clancy’s The Sum of All Fears and Thomas Harris’ Black Sunday are the most famous. In some ways, these books are reassuring. What could anyone do to stop a bomb plot? You know, anyone other than the heroic anti-terrorists in America’s (and Israel’s) employ. Best to pay your taxes, enjoy the game and trust Uncle Sam to keep you safe. That kind of passive, fatalistic mindset suits terrorists and gun grabbers alike. The former because it’s easier to annihilate people without situational awareness. The latter because it’s easier to disarm civilians if they think the government will keep them safe. Of course . . .

There’s nothing wrong with maintaining organizations dedicated to rooting out and destroying terrorists and/or arresting criminals – as long as they respect their Constitutional limitations. Bu

Colorado Constitutional Carry Considered

Sun, 02/02/2014 - 14:00

Two Colorado legislators, Jared Wright (R-Fruita) and Chris Holbert (R-Parker) have introduced HB1041. The measure would remove the requirement to obtain a permit from the state in order to possess concealed weapons.   The same restrictions that now apply to concealed carry permit holders would also apply to people who would be eligible for the permit. The permit system would be retained for those who want a permit for purposes of reciprocity with other states.

Representative Wright said that a permit shouldn’t be required to exercise a Constitutional right. From gjsentinel.com:

“This is in essence allowing law-abiding citizens to carry a concealed handgun without being subjected to criminal laws,” Wright said. “Now let me tell you what this bill does not do. This bill do

The NRA Throws a Flag on the NFL’s Bad Call

Sun, 02/02/2014 - 12:00

We still think Marty Daniel’s Super Bowl ad submission was a crazy-good bit of gonzo marketing. As in he had to know that the NFL would sooner air a NAMBLA recruitment commercial than a spot advocating armed self defense by a company that specializes in turning out scary black rifles. Roger Goodell would rather stick knitting needles in his ears than listen to all the inevitable finger-wagging denunciations from scolds like little Bobby Costas. But whatever. The NRA’s obviously figures Super Bowl weekend is as good a time as any to jump on the pile. Again.

Shooting the GLOCK 42

Sun, 02/02/2014 - 10:00

Dirk Diggler and I put the GLOCK 42 through its paces yesterday at On Target in Valley Park, Missouri. Long story short: it’s a mixed bag. While generally very soft-shooting, Gaston’s littlest gun seems to be fairly particular about the ammo it eats. Personal defense rounds ran through it, in the words of General Patton, like crap through a goose. On the other hand, heavier, hotter ammo was, well, more problematic. We confirmed Hickock45′s experience with Buffalo Bore 100gr. +P. That snappy-shooting stuff tends to lock the slide back. Freedom Munitions 100gr. gun food did it even more so, as Dirk found out, above. And while we’re fairly sure Dirk didn’t do it, it is possible to limp-wrist the gun. We ran seven or eight flavors through the babiest GLOCK in session one and I’ll probabl

Quote of the Day: Absurd on its Face Edition

Sun, 02/02/2014 - 08:00

“Black people have been programmed to think that self-defense, our defense, is someone else’s responsibility—that good, honest, decent black people have nothing to do with guns, because guns are for white folks, police, and black criminals. I find it to be an absurd notion. The vast majority of gun laws in America have been aimed at trying to disarm black people.” – Conceal-and-carry trainer Gerald Vernon, Dismantling the stigma of guns [at chicagoreader.com]

Weekend Digest: Spiders and Crocs and Pythons Edition

Sat, 02/01/2014 - 21:00

“You look like you have money, I’m having a bad day.” That’s what a panhandler on a bus in Brooklyn, New York said just before he opened fire with a 9mm yesterday morning. He fired four rounds, striking one man, Jowainza Moloney, in the hand and nearly hitting a pregnant woman sitting nearby. After the panhandler asked Moloney for money and then moved on to a mother with a young child, Moloney stepped in, telling the beggar he needed to get a job and leave other people alone. The beggar then threatened and cursed at Moloney before pulling out the gun. Despite being hit with one round, Moloney wrestled the man to the floor of the bus while the driver drove a couple blocks to the nearest police precinct, where the gunman was arrested. Read on . . .

G2 Research’s RIP Ammo – Ballistic Testing, Phase One

Sat, 02/01/2014 - 20:00

By ShootingTheBull410

There’s no denying there’s a lot of interest in G2 Research’s new R.I.P. Ammunition. Their marketing video has gone viral, with well over 1.5 million views as of the time of this writing. And even the mainstream press has picked up and run with the story of the new, amazing, superty-duper ammo that is “like no other projectile the world has ever seen.” The company has been making some very bold claims about the performance of this new round. And when we didn’t have any ammo to test, we were able to use some elementary deductive skills and basic logic (along with some junior-high-school math) to de

Full List of Mayors Against Illegal Guns

Sat, 02/01/2014 - 18:00

The Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG) are for civilian disarmament. This fact escaped a few of their early members; politicians who considered reading the name of the organization sufficient due diligence. Upon learning that they’d allied themselves with America’s number one gun grabber (NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg) they quietly dropped off the membership list. Although the MAIG roll call remains voluminous, the gun control group’s been quiet lately, having purchased Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America as a more media-friendly mouthpiece. The email containing the list [posted below] is the first we’ve heard of them in a long while. (Damn their eyes for not formatting it properly.) Does it signal a new push? Watch this space. Meanwhile, Idaho, New Hampshire and Utah. No MAIG members.

Mexican Standoff in the South as Revolution Simmers

Sat, 02/01/2014 - 16:00

The report above is entirely misleading. The Mexican military controls the town of Apatzingan. Mexican revolutionaries (a.k.a., self-defense groups or vigilantes) control the countryside. So it’s not the Knights Templar drug cartel vs. government troops protecting the locals. It’s the Knights Templar allied with government troops vs. inhabitants. To regain control of the region from the locals, the Government has pacified the drug thugs – by secret agreement – and called for the revolutionaries to register their members and arms. So far, only eight out of twenty such groups have cooperated. Allegedly. The Government plans to bide their time, withdraw quietly and let the drug thugs exact retributions as and when. Then it’s business as usual for the cartels and the Government gets its vig.
