The Truth About Guns

Gun Hero of the Day: Troy Michigan Pizza Hut
Gun culture 2.0 is quietly taking the nation by storm. We’re talking the Call of Duty generation’s real-world firearms affinity, the growing number of women shooters hitting the range (and carrying concealed), the rise of the gunblogosphere and ballistic YouTubery, the increasing visibility of foodies who hunt, and more. Even as gun culture 2.0 spreads, OFWGs lament the death of gun culture 1.0. You know: war movies, black-and-white TV westerns (e.g., The Rifleman) and toy guns. Lots of toy guns! As the pictu
SIG/Sauer 1911 BOGO!: Buy One .45, Get One .22 Free
SIG/Sauer wants to move some metal in the next few months, and they’re resorting to used car salesman tactics to do it. But in a good way. No, really! After the manner of Lexus dealers handing out little Scion econoboxes with the purchase of a loaded Lexus luxury SUV, SIG/Sauer will toss an extra 1911-22 in the box if you purchase one of the .45 ACP 1911s shown above . . .
Full-power SIG 1911s generally run between $900 and $1500. Not all of them will qualify for a free .22 practice gun, just the ones on this list:
1911 Ultra TT (1911U-45-TSS)
1911 Compact C3 (1911CO-45-T-C3)
1911 Carry Nightmare (1911FCA-45-NMR)
1911 Tacops (1911R-45-TACOPS)
1911 Spartan (1911-45-SPARTAN)
1911 Stainless (1911R-45-SSS-CA)
Given the current scarcity of .22 long rifle ammo, this otherwise-brilliant promotion might not get the traction SIG is hoping for. My local retailers are trying to squeeze ei
TSA Chief: No Guns For My Blue Shirt Goons

Quote of the Day: Fear and Loathing in Detroit Edition
“Most telling, there was research done by felons who were incarcerated, and what they said is that they’re more fearful of armed citizens than they are of police officers. In fact, what I’ve seen in Detroit that’s very different than other places where I’ve lived, is that the suspects here wear body armor. There’s a fear that a good citizen may respond with a firearm.” – Detroit Police Chief James Craig, Detroit police chief defends stance on backing citizens carrying guns [at detroitnews.com]

Despite the fact that Japan is basically a completely disarmed country, Japanese police seized a bunch of guns and ammunition from a house in Kanagawa Prefecture that they’d received a tip was a yakuza stash house. They found 18 handguns including S&W revolvers and Colt automatic pistols, a “military rifle” and 670 rounds of ammunition. No arrests have been made in connection with the seizure. Read on. . .

Restoring Public Employees’ Ability to Defend Themselves
During the last hundred years, the legal ability of public employees to carry defensive weapons has been eroded along with the rights of ordinary citizens. Originally intended to prevent minorities and immigrants from being armed, the philosophy of a disarmed population was put in place through work rules at all levels of government. Much of this was resisted by people with a long cultural affinity for arms, and, as with the general prohibition on concealed weapons, was selectively enforced against minorities . . .
I recall my father taking a pistol along while working as a state employee in charge of a surveying crew in the 1960s. Even in the early 1970′s, I organized informal pistol matches while working for a federally sponsored forest improvement project in Wisconsin that employed students during summer break. No one blinked or considered that it might be improper. This was three years after the passage of the infamous Gun Contr
Billy Johnson: Just Say No to Firearm Ignorance
Billy may be swimming upstream here, but his point is no less valid. While he doesn’t specify, why not start the educate process with the nation’s local state and federal legislators? Now there’s a job even Sisyphus would think twice about.
Samson Mfg Reveals Their New Ghost Gun
Okay, the gun isn’t actually real. But Samson did an excellent job cutting together this video mocking the California legislator who proved to the nation on-camera that he has no idea how guns work. It’s worth a watch.
NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio Joins MAIG
There’s bad blood between former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and current NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio. Or so Bill de Blasio wanted voters to believe before his election. Now that the dust has settled and the progressives’ progressive is in Gracie Mansion, it can be revealed that both men are statists with scant regard for the United States Constitution. As a sign that Mayor de Blasio has as much contempt for Americans’ natual and civil right to keep and bear arms as Moms’ main man, Hizzoner has joined Bloomberg’s anti-gun group, Mayors Against Legal Illegal Guns. Surprised? Me neither. “Mayor Bloomberg took on this fight when few others wo
IL House Bill Would Send Bad CCW Instructors to Jail
By John Boch
Illinois State Representative Ed Sullivan, Jr. (R) called me in recent days to explain his new House Bill 4290. In a nutshell, it’s more or less a single-paragraph in length (why couldn’t more bills be like this one?) and says if you fraudulently certify that someone has completed firearms training as required by Illinois concealed carry law, you will be convicted of a Class A misdemeanor — and it’s non-probational. In other words, commit instructor fraud and you’re going to spend time in jail – up to 364 days, in fact . . .
You’ll also never again be an Illinois State Police-approved instructor. Ever.
Representative Sullivan said the bill is pretty close to a sure thing for passage in both chambers and will be signed into law. Brandon Phe
CT CAGV Dissenter’s Open Letter: Just Say NO to “Assault Weapon” Amnesty
This is an open letter to the elected officials of Connecticut and concerned citizens:
I am a long-time supporter, financially and morally, of CT Against Gun Violence and have applauded their accomplishments in the last legislative session. The new gun law was a triumph of common sense and the law should be allowed to stand unchanged. Simply put, we can not allow any amnesty nor leniency for owners of automatic weapons and high capacity clips . . .
Earlier this week, I received an email from CAGV that has me distressed. Apparently, the organization wishes to support a limited amnesty for gun owners who have either intentionally or unintentionally ignored the registration deadline at the end of December. In exchange, CAGV proposes other tweaks to the law that seem too technical to matter much.
I am against this
It Should Have Been A DGU: Ballistic British Brewskis Edition.
The proprietor of a Bargain Booze store in Manchester, U.K. had the intestinal fortitude to throw a barrage of beer cans at the robbers who looted his till at gunpoint. Clearly, it should have been a DGU . . .
From Sky News:
Police say two men stormed a Bargain Booze store in Ramsbottom, Greater Manchester, and threatened staff.
Footage shows the shopkeeper being struck on the head by a man apparently armed with a handgun, as another raids the cash register.
The victim is seen defending himself by throwing items from the counter at one of the attackers. Both robbers flee the scene in the direction of Ramsbottom town centre.
Police said one of the men is believed to be aged in his 20s, around 6ft tall, with a slim build.
He was wearing a white &
Self-Defense Tip: Practice Shooting from the Ground
Once a shooter learns proper grip, stance and breathing, it’s time to leave the square range behind. In terms of skills (rather than tactics), it’s time to learn how to draw from concealment, shoot and move, ID cover and concealment and defend yourself from the deck. Do not neglect the latter. Should you be attacked violently, rather than “just” robbed, your opponent or opponents will do everything in his/their power to knock you to the ground. And by “knock” I mean club, stab, slash, punch, kick or shoot you. Given that the bad guy almost always has the first mover advantage, there’s a good chance they’ll succeed. Then what? Then . . .
shoot them—if you’re in imminent danger of death or grievous bodily harm and imminence is imminent. To do be able to do that effectively, you really ought to practice. The world in general, and your sights in specific, look very different down there. Besides, when was the last time you shot upwards?

Constructive Possession of NFA Firearms – Red Hands Not Required
By Matthew J. Bergstrom, Esq.
There has been much confusion about the handling of another person’s NFA firearms and when criminal liability could arise. Generally speaking, possession of an NFA firearm by someone other than the registered owner could be viewed as an illegal transfer. Possession, however, is not limited to the person caught red-handed with your can. The concept of constructive possession covers a broader set of circumstances encompassing many common situations for gun owners. Unfortunately, not everyone takes these issues seriously.
Constructive possession exists when a person knowingly has the potential for access or control of NFA firearms outside the supervision of the registered owner of those arms.¹ When NFA firearms are in possession of someone other than the registered owner it could constitute an unlawful transfer subject to the severe penalties of the NFA and the tax code. These penalties could include a prison sentence, hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines, and loss of the right

Quote of the Day: Florida is the Pitts Edition
“They call Florida the ‘Gunshine State.’ But this madness is not Florida-centric. In Colorado, you can have a gun in class. In Arizona, you can take one to the bar. In Georgia, they’re trying to make it legal to take one to church. So this isn’t just Florida. It’s America. We live in states of insanity.” Leonard Pitts, Even gun owners think Florida needs stronger gun laws [via newsday.com]
Daily Digest: Just In Time Edition
A grand jury indicted a Charlotte, NC police officer for voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of an unarmed Florida A&M football player, Jonathan Ferrell (above). Ferrell wrecked his car on back in September and went to a nearby residence for help. He banged on the door, frightening the resident, who called police. Three officers responded, including Randall Kerrick, who fired 13 shots, 10 of which struck Ferrell. Kerrick was the only officer to fire his weapon. This is the second grand jury that the case has been before; the first refused to indict Kerrick, but the AG decided to put it before a second grand jury because the first one was missing four members. Voluntary manslaughter carries a prison sentence of up to 11 years . . .

Horned Frog Fails to Avoid Stupid People in Stupid Places Doing Stupid Things
“TCU defensive end Devonte Fields was walking toward his off-campus house at 5:50 a.m. when he was jumped by three suspects, including one who used a semi-automatic pistol to strike Fields on top of his head,” espn.go.com reports. Hmmm. Shouldn’t the 2012 AP Big 12 defensive player of the year have been fast asleep at the time, instead of returning from God-knows-where at the crack of dawn? He
