Weapons Man

Here’s a simplified extract from the FNH 3 Gun rules, as relates to Accidental Discharges (as the rules call them). It’s Section 2.4 but we’ve binned the numbers for legibility.

We’ll cover the usual subjects: Guns, Usage and Employment, Cops ‘n’ Crims, Unconventional (and current) Warfare, and Lord Love a Duck!

If you know anything about naval torpedoes, you’ll understand instantly why a circular run is A Bad Thing. US torpedoes in World War II were prone to circular runs — and that was not even one of our tin-fishes’ top three problems.

Here’s something up for auction now, ending in a couple of days, that would be a point of pride in any collection of US Martial Arms. We’re not getting why this rifle has drawn no bids.

This is a Soviet animated propaganda short in two parts. Done in an early 1970s style (which was a 1968-72 flash in the pan here, but in use in the USSR right up until the fall of that state), Tir (Shooting Range) tells the story of an unemployed young American, who, after his rickety old car breaks down, takes a job at a shooting range where a fat Capitalist just slightly less hook-nosed than the Der Stürmer version puts him to work resetting targets — then shooting at him.

This guy, unlike our last gator feeder, was in no way asking for it. Robert Hernandez was just minding his own business and weeding a pond, part of his regular job. And then Mr Mechanized Handbag up and took a chomp out of him.

While the US Navy is looking for some way to keelhaul the guys who fired back at the Chattanooga recruiting and reserve site attacker, for whom the President flew the flags at half-staff after refusing to do so for his victims, the Canadians — specifically, the Province of New Brunswick — are honoring their guy who shot back, former Parliamentary Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers (who knows where to lay his hands on a Mountie-issue Smith & Wesson 5946 as well as the ceremonial mace of office). Vickers is being presented the province’s highest honor (well, “honour,” since it is Canuckistan).

Many of you were brought up in the gun culture by your fathers. That didn’t happen here.

Recently we discussed Jim Schatz’s 2015 NDIA presentation, in which he suggested that US had lost infantry firepower “overmatch,” which he seemed to define as “longest effective range.” His numbers were fuzzy, with three different ranges for the SVD (one of them being 1500m, and we can’t believe that Jim hasn’t shot an SVD or the better-finished, reverse-engineered Chinese NDM-86), but we had several issues with his concept.

You can imagine the discussion in the waiting line at the Pearly Gates:

This brief (16 minutes) documentary shows a complex Haqqani Network attack on Combat Outpost Zerok in Paktika Province in southeastern Afghanistan. The attackers use direct fire, indirect fire, and a suicide VBIED in a coordinated attack on the COP.

That’s what it took to produce this ghastly picture:

We have to admire this guy’s nerve. Next time we need a Frenchman with guts, we’ll be sure to give him a ring.

However, if we need someone to teach Making Prudent Life Decisions we’ll probably give him a pass. Paraglider airmanship? Major positive spot report, there, Ranger. Plus Ten. But, Common Sense? Minus Ten [Bleep]ing Thousand.

This stunt is probably not coming to an action movie in your metroplex next summer, because producers (and directors, and, especially, audiences) nowadays are accustomed to laws-of-physics-bending CGI “stunts”.

But then, anybody can be a hero in green screen. He did this stunt hanging in real space over real man-eating rocks. You’ve got to admire his guts, even as you question his brains.

The story doesn’t seem quite straight, but then it is California, where lots of guns are outlawed but people still manage to get hurt somehow. In this mass-casualty incident, 11 were sent to hospital, 5 of them in critical condition, when a speeding limo slammed into another car, driving it into a third car. All three cars were totally destroyed.

From time to time, my dear Watson, a train derails, somewhere in North America. You only hear about it if it’s near you, or if people are hurt or killed (in most derailments, they’re not), or, sometimes, if it’s a petroleum train.

Getting your foot stuck in your lawnmower is most people’s idea of a very bad day. (Although, he and his foot seem to have made it to the hospital, so perhaps he’ll be OK. But for one New York man, There His Troubles Began. A Good Samaritan who came to his aid apparently was a graduate of the Howard, Fine and Howard school of human assistance. Or maybe the Wile E. Coyote Academy of Genius.
