I’ve been thoroughly enjoying the experience of test-driving, or rather test-paddling, a soon- to-be-released kayak from Pelican International.

Check Out the Fall Issue of ‘ADVENTURESS’ Magazine, a free digital publication tailored for the outdoor woman and country lifestyle. It is intending to inspire women to try new things and inform them for greater skills in anything outdoors, from hunting and fishing to nature and gardening.

You know we like to feature outdoor blogs that highlight women who live the outdoor lifestyle. At Outdoors Women, they’ve chosen to feature Erika Ochs. She hunts and fishes and is working on a degree in Conservation Management.

Writing about early female big-game hunters, aka historical huntresses, was not as easy as I thought it would be. I chose 2 women, Delia J. Akeley and Mary Kingsley, who I feel exhibited strength and who pursued their dreams despite what society expected of them. And although these ladies wrote many books, there is very little information available about them.

Washington Women Outdoors will be kicking it into high gear this November with several events, including bike rides, backpacking trips and hikes. Washington Women Outdoors (WWO) is a non-profit organization that is run almost entirely by volunteers. We engage in outdoor activities in the Washington, DC area where women share skills, experience, strengths, and support to enhance and expand each woman’s world. We welcome women of diverse ages, races, and lifestyles. WWO provides instruction by women for women. Activities are available for all skill levels to inspire the beginner and to challenge the more advanced.

ISLAMORADA, FLORIDA- This year’s Islamorada Light Tackle Tournament was not totally blown out! As it is each year, the tourney was based out of the Islamorada Fishing Club and it brought in most of the usual International Women’s Fishing Association (IWFA) members that love being a part of this tournament every year. These ladies sure do know how to have fun even when presented with the bad news of cancelling two consecutive fishing days out of the three day tournament. The winds were gusting making conditions unsafe for fishing. We were all pretty down about not being able to fish those days but we made up for it by spending time with each other doing different activities and playing tourist for a day. Some of the ladies went shopping, others went to Key West and some just relaxed around town. Tuesday was a more eventful day as we all got together after our Social Director, or so was the title we gave her after coming up with such fun activities, Connie O’Day rallied up the troops and we all met at the Fishing Club for card games and the surprise activity belly dancing lessons. I sometimes wonder if I am the only person unwilling to open my door to an unexpected visitor. I actually go beyond just not opening my door to strangers: I also don’t make a sound and stay completely out of sight. I won’t even look out my window to see who is at my door just to make sure I am not spotted. That might sound paranoid, but who just shows up at someone else’s house without notice? The only possible (and acceptable) response is the mailman–and truthfully, I even get advanced notifications of upcoming deliveries that require my signature. So really, the answer is nobody.
