An interview with M.L. Rowland, author of ‘Zero Degree Murder’
Babbs interviews author M.L. Rowland about her debut search and rescue based book.
Who better to pen a novel based on a search and rescue team than M.L. Rowland? For 10 years, M.L. volunteered on a search and rescue team based in southern California. She’s encountered situations from lost children separated from their hiking parents to dangerous survival situations.
Her first book, Zero Degree Murder: A Search and Rescue Mystery, published by the Penguin Group, captures a reader’s attention immediately, with the introduction of protagonist and extremely likeable Gracie Kinkaid, a search and rescue volunteer who is on a mission with her team to find a lost British film star. She winds up stopping a cold-blooded killer. Throughout the adventure, which I read cover to cover on a 3-hour flight recently, Gracie and the team educate and entertain readers in search and rescue methods and techniques.
In fact, anyone who hikes or hunts or spends time outdoors in remote locations, should read this book for the safety techniques alone. M.L.’s advice on safety tips and techniques may apply to an extreme adventure or even walk through a park.
M.L. took time recently from a European vacation to answer these questions. Take a look and see if you don’t sense the real deal pushing the
Bone hunting: The difference between antlers and horns
Mia Anstine explains the difference between antlers and horns in her latest blog post via Beretta USA.
It’s that time of year! The weather is getting warmer, snow is melting, and hunters are preparing for spring turkey hunting. Part of this is deciding which gun, choke and shotgun shell you will use. Another part of this involves scouting and locating turkey habitat. Springtime is a when we head out to look for those gobblers for upcoming seasons. While we’re out there, we can seize the opportunity to teach our young ones about wildlife and the outdoors. It’s also the time when bucks and bulls lose their antlers. This is a perfect time to drag our families, young and old, along to do another type of hunting: shed hunting!
Shed hunting is an activity that gets us away from the TV and outside to enjoy God’s creations. It is quite similar to the Easter egg hunts we had as kids. Regardless of your desire, or lack of, to hunt animals, anyone can enjoy it.
I often hear people say they are going “bone hunting” or “horn hunting.” Although some know that antlers are not horns or bones, o

Colt-sponsored shooter Maggie Reese won the High Lady Open division distinction at this weekend’s Superstition Mountain Mystery (SMM) 3-Gun. The match was held Friday through Sunday at the Rio Salado Sportsman’s Club in Mesa, Ariz. This was Reese’s third time winning High Lady at this competition.
“All of us at Colt congratulate Maggie on her outstanding performance at the Superstition Mountain Mystery 3-Gun competition,” said Joyce Rubino, Vice President of Marketing for Colt’s Manufacturing Company. “We are proud to have such a strong and skilled female shooter representing the company.”
Reese relied on her Colt LE6920 for the rifle portion of the SMM 3-Gun. “There was a lot of accuracy involved in this particular match,” said Reese. “Having a dependable rifle made all the difference in trusting my shot placement.”
The stages also included distance targets up to 350 yards, along with some unique challeng
5 things I learned from tactical yoga
She Shoots Too: Michelle Cerino describes her experience in a tactical yoga class.
Recently, while attending my second International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association (ILEETA) Conference and Expo, I had the opportunity to attend a course titled “Tactical Yoga, Preventing Injury to Knees, Backs, and Necks.” Remembering how I felt after the Blueridge 3 Gun match last year, I hoped to gain some information from this course to help me survive another year of competition. Whether spending a day training on the range, or competing in a match, there are times when, the following day, I feel like I have been run over by a truck.
I arrived at the class early, along with several other students and the instructor, Tracy Ciepiela. Frankly, the ratio of women to men surprised me. You see, the conference is made up of roughly 97 percent males attendees. When class started, the room co

Benelli USA welcomes Janna Reeves to 3-Gun team
ACCOKEEK, MD — Team Benelli welcomes Janna Reeves to its roster of top 3-gun shooters. Reeves discovered her penchant for shooting when she completed the shooting requirements for obtaining her concealed carry license for a handgun. A quick learner, it wasn’t long before Reeves earned her NRA certification to teach several nationally recognized firearms courses. She spent several years instructing at an indoor shooting range with a special focus on helping women become confident and capable with their firearms.
She has also become a respected voice in the firearms community, contributing informative articles to various websites and magazines and has created a social media following of more than 300,000 for her gun and 2nd Amendment themed pages.
In 2013, she stepped into the ring of competitive shooting, entering her first shotgun match, which was soon followed by her first 3-Gun competition. Reeves won High Lady at the Rockcastle ProAm; Amateur Division, a major national match and has raced down the path to

Questions to ask before hunting abroad
Mia & the Little Gal: Mia Anstine shares tips on how to prepare for a hunting trip overseas.
LG and I dream of hunting abroad. In our downtime we chat about where we would like to go. Can you imagine how long the list is? We’ve all had those, “If I won the lottery” chats, right? The “where” question really isn’t the hard part because we’d be happy to see the entire world. That is, if money, safety and time weren’t issues. Now we just have to figure out how to get there.
LG and I chatted with a few of our friends who are experienced world travelers and accomplished hunters. Their answers about hunting abroad enlightened us.
Experience worldwide hunts
This advice comes from 5 women who have hunted Africa, New Zealand, Spain, Ireland, Mexico, Australia and much of North America. These ladies have the world covered, as far as hunting experience goes.

The April Fool’s Rule: Why the International Game and Fish Association’s new gender rule is for fools
Gold is a chemical element with the symbol Au and atomic number 79. Gold is one of the few metals that remain shiny, without tarnishing, when exposed to air or water. In popular culture, gold is associated with phrases like: “heart of gold”; “that’s golden!”; “golden moment”; “then you’re golden!” and “golden boy” (Wikipedia).
Iron pyrite, on the other hand, also known as “fool’s gold,” is a brassy yellow mineral that is often mistaken for gold. Basically valueless, it is used to make sulfuric acid.
It stinks just as much as the International Game Fish Association’s (IGFA) new gender rule that is sure to have men and women fishing on opposite banks for the foreseeable future. It’s known as the April Fools’ Rule because it takes effect as of April Fools’ Day 2014. The untimely announcement of the new rule was made on International Women’s Day … wow, does that stink!

7 questions with IDPA’s Joyce Wilson: Part 2
In Part 1 of “7 Questions with Joyce Wilson,” I learned how Joyce discovered the shooting sports and later found herself at the helm of IDPA. Driven by a desire to be able to protect herself, Joyce’s interest in firearms evolved into having fun on the range. There’s so much more to this ladies national champion – raising cattle, dreams of flying to Alaska and a little embroidery on the side. Let’s pick up where we left off.
JG: Joyce, you went from shooting your first match to running a national championship in just six years! I think it speaks volumes of your natural leadership and as a result IDPA has seen huge growth during the past couple of years. One thing I admire about you is that you listen and take things in, yet you aren’t afraid to make a decision when ne

5 ways to customize your handgun
ShootingStarr: Britney Starr shares 5 ways to add a little flair to your handgun.
If you’re going to carry a handgun on a daily basis, why not add a little customization while you’re at it? Who knows, maybe you’ll eventually have a different gun/accessory combo for each outfit, just like you have a different pair of shoes.
Here are 5 ways to customize your handgun with aftermarket accessories.
1. Extended magazine release
I recently installed an OD green, aluminum, extended magazine release for my Gen4 GLOCK 19. It gives my gun a small pop of color, without going overboard, and also allows for the magazine release to be more easily accessed. I found the installation easy enough to do on my own, after looking up directions online. Ah, the power of Google.

Secret Women’s Business Barramundi Fishing Challenge
In this guest post, Rocky Edwards shares her experience while fishing the Secret Womens Business Barramundi Fishing Challenge.
I recently fished in a ladies-only fishing tournament called Secret Womens Business (SWB) Barramundi Challenge. Every competitor and team managed their own boat, gear and fishing. This tournament is held on a billabong (small lake) that is located on the edge of the world heritage listed Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory of Australia. Thirty seven boats and 123 competitors descended on the lily-lined waterway that is bursting with birds, fish and menacing saltwater crocodiles. It’s a semi-tropical climate, and at this time of year, it is hot and the conditions are extremely humid. It is a hard slog for any angler.
When I signed up to fish this event, I suspected it would be a tough fish. I based this on reports filed from right across the top end of Australia that
7 Tips for introducing young girls to shooting
Marti Davis Afield: Marti shares ways to get young girls interested in shooting.
I grew up in a family that has always enjoyed the outdoors. To be honest, I can’t even remember my first time shooting. I can tell you this; it has been at least 30 plus years ago, probably closer to 35. My dad introduced me to shooting with a .22 rifle, target — plinking and coon hunting. He definitely didn’t push me into it, but then again he didn’t keep me from it. I always had the opportunity when I wanted to try shooting.
What age is the right age? That’s up to you and the youngster you’re introducing to shooting. Every child is different, only her parents can make that determination. Please internally link Julie’s column here.
Below are 7 tips for introducing young girls to shooting. (They probably will work on boys, too!)
1. Don’t be pushy
Ask your child often if she wants to learn to shoot. If she turns you down, don’t give up. But,
