Stacy Moore caught only three keepers today, but those three largemouth bass were big enough to put him in the lead at the Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Northern Divisional on Lake Monroe.
The Huntingburg, Ind., angler had only five bites today resulting in three keepers weighing 10 pounds, 9 ounces and two short fish. The pickings were slim for the rest of the field as 30 contenders weighed in only one keeper each and 43 anglers blanked.
Moore has been fishing on Lake Monroe for more than 20 years and relied on a familiar pattern in the upper arm of the lake to catch his fish. “It is...

Yellowstone Officials: Super Volcano Eruption Rumors a Hoax, No Evacuation
Officials at Yellowstone National Park and the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory (YVO) find themselves quelling fears recently after rumors of volcanic activity in the park. The rumors originated online and were quickly picked up by social media posters, which reportedly concerned many visitors to the park.
"The park has not been evacuated," read a statement by the YVO on the US Geographic Service website. "This one is pretty easy to verify by everyone. If the Old Faithful webcam shows people, or if news articles are coming out about...
Massachusetts Governor Signs Bill Overhauling State Gun Laws
On Wednesday, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick signed into law a bill---H. 4376---meant to update the state's gun laws. The new law will bring sweeping changes to how the gun crimes are penalized, how the state handles background checks, and the power of local police to deny "licenses to carry." The law will also empower the state police to create a firearms tracking unit and increase security in schools.
“Our communities and our families are safer when irresponsible gun sales and use are reduced,” Patrick said in a Read more »
Shark Attacks 7-year-old Boy in Louisiana Lake
In most cases, sharks are rarely expected in a lake, unless you plan on visiting Lake Pontchartrain in southeastern Louisiana. Those who frequent the brackish estuary know that during certain times of the year, Lake Pontchartrain hosts a stealthy predator underneath its waters: the bull shark. According to The Times-Picayne, a seven-year-old boy from Lakeview became the victim of the lake's first recorded shark attack when he was bit last Friday while swimming near Southshore...
Luke Clausen’s Summertime Hot Spots: Five More Great Fishing Destinations
A few years back, I wrote an article about my five favorite summertime bass fishing locations. Since then, I've found many more great summertime vacation spots for bass fisherman. Here are five more to add to the list:
1. Lake St. Clair, Michigan – Located just a few miles from dowtown Detroit, Lake St. Clair is a regular on “top fishing spots” lists put out by many media services. There is a reason for it---big smallmouth bass. St. Clair is a shallow fishery with an
...Wind is Your Friend
A walleye never feels the breeze on its face. But rest assured, he loves the wind.
That's a fact too few anglers take into account---walleyes respond positively to changes in wind direction.
How many of you pull behind the nearest island or the downwind side of a point when the wind blows? Trying to present bait precisely while buffeted by strong winds can be a monumental task. Serious problems with effective boat control can result.
But, haven't you wondered why the bite died on a spot when the only apparent change from the last time you were there is the way the wind...
The Early Bird Gets the Lake Trout on Grand Traverse Bay
We were on the water, on the East Arm of Grand Traverse Bay, at first light. Within minutes of settling in over 100 feet of water, Chuck Emmert announced that he’d hooked a fish. I looked at my watch: 6 a.m., on the nose.
Emmert brought the fish up to the side of the boat and our host, Al Scott, slid the landing net under the lake trout and pronounced it a keeper.
About 10 minutes later, I felt something take my spoon, set the hook, and soon reeled in a laker that was smaller than Emmert’s fish, but still better than the minimum 20-inch size limit.
Not too much later, Scott caught...
Sig Sauer’s P226 Elite SAO: Love Child of the 1911 and P226?
There’s no doubt about the Sig Sauer P226’s status as a reliable and quality handgun. Hard-core gun users like Navy SEALs and Texas Rangers carry the P226 (or as the military calls it, the M11). Like most of the other Sig Sauer “P” models, the standard P226 is a hammer-fired, double-/single-action design. The first shot requires a 10-pound trigger pull to cock the hammer and break the shot. Subsequent shots only require about 4-1/2 pounds of trigger pressure as the hammer is cocked from the semiautomatic action. “Standard” P226s are available in multiple calibers: 9x19mm, .40...
Hunting Deer in the Final Approach
Those summertime bucks have been visible and you are looking forward to opening day in hopes of putting your tag on one---then suddenly, they just disappear. Here’s what went wrong and how to fix it.
The buck in my spotting scope was not a giant by any means. His thick, stubby 10-point frame would maybe go 130 tops. But for this part of north-central Minnesota where more than 80 percent of bucks are shot when they are yearlings, just seeing a four-year-old buck was a rare occurrence indeed. What made this buck appealing was the predictability of his habits. I had seen him more...
Video: How to Cook “Swamp Cabbage”
Odds are, if you live near Florida or South Carolina, you've seen a sabal palm before. After all, it is the state tree of both those states, and can grow just about anywhere. What you may not know is that the sabal palm is edible, and was highly valued by both early Americans and settlers for its cabbage-like bud. Also known as "Florida crackers," heart of the palm can be eaten raw or cooked with meat. In the video below, Deermeatfordinner shows us how to harvest a sabal palm and make a rich stew out of it.
Be aware that harvesting a sabal palm's terminal bud will kill the plant because...
Rising Likelihood of Forest Fire Endangers Caribou Range
New research by the US Geological Survey (USGS) and the University of Alaska, Fairbanks finds that caribou ranges in North America may be on the cusp of a drastic change. According to the study, which was recently published in the journal PLoS ONE, the increasing chance of wildfires in rural Alaska and Canada's Yukon may soon force caribou to move their wintering grounds.
“We project that the Porcupine caribou herd will lose 21% of winter habitat to fire by the end of this century, with the majority of this loss driven by increased flammability in spruce forests in the Yukon,"...
Seattle-based Company Launches Salmon to Safety with “Fish Cannon”
Earlier this summer, Whooshh Innovations helped the Yakima Nation Fisheries transport hundreds of spring Chinook through the Roza Dam using an experimental process many have dubbed "fish cannons." Of course, the "cannons" in question are actually long, flexible vacuum sleeves. When a fish swims near or is placed into the tube, the suction will transport the animal through the sleeve at approximately 10 meters per second to the desired location. Whooshh Innovations CEO Vincent...
Florida Police Catch 12-foot, Cat-eating Python
Burmese pythons are becoming an ever-increasing problem for Florida, but the residents of Port St. Lucie had little idea that they would encounter one of these large snakes in their own backyard. According to WPTV, officers from the Port St. Lucie Police Department captured a 12-foot, 120-pound python last Friday after it wandered into an empty lot. Residents told the police that it had been there for some time, eating any cat unlucky...
Ten Tips for Successful Surf Fishing
With the final days of summer upon us and fall right around the corner, looking to the surf for some great fishing action should be on every outdoor enthusiast’s list. Great opportunities to catch both numbers of fish and numbers of species abound. Salty seas, still-warm waters, and diminished crowds also await---so it’s a great time for a family outing, too.
When I think of surf fishing, my friend Angleo Peluso immediately comes to mind. He’s a fly and surf fishing expert and author of the book Fly Fishing The Surf. I turned to Angelo for some advice on successful surf...
Video: Plucky Elk Confronts Bison Trio
Elk herds and bison often frequent the same habitat, and in areas like Yellowstone National Park, the two species can be found migrating together. So it's not a big surprise to see these two large animals occasionally duke it out. The young elk in the video below, however, may have bitten off more than he can chew after challenging three bison to a staring contest. The video was posted by photographer Bradley Orsted on Facebook earlier this year, showing a spike elk confronting what appears to be three female bison. One of the bison eventually returns a short charge from the elk with one of...
Demand for Russian-made Guns Increases Following Sanctions
Collectors of Russian-made firearms may be finding their favorite products harder to come by---not to mention more expensive---after the Obama administration introduced another round of sanctions against Russian companies last month that included Kalashnikov Concern.
The corporation owns the major Russian factories that manufacture the ever-popular Kalashnikov series of rifles, alongside Saiga shotguns and other firearms. July's sanctions, which were part of the United States' embargo against Russia over the latter's support of anti-government separatists in Ukraine, have effectively banned...
Energy for Hunters: HuntNdurance
As we walked through the aisles at the International Sportsman’s Expo (ISE) this year, we checked out the latest and greatest products coming to market. Jana and I had traveled from Montana to Salt Lake City, Utah to meet and greet the thousands of ISE attendees at the Sportsman Channel’s booth. Over the three-day event we visited with many manufacturers, who had the latest gadgets they were bringing to market. Halfway into the show we were headed to grab a bite to eat when we came upon a vendor that had a super-cool display featuring new energy drinks, bars, and shots.
We were both...
