Testing the Remington 20/20 Rifle

Mon, 01/13/2014 - 20:00

Remington unveiled their new 20/20 rifle a few weeks back, and for the first time we’ve been able to put our hands on the gun and see how it functions. And while it might just be that TrackingPoint’s real deal has spoiled me for life, I’m not a big fan . . .

The rifle I shot was a long action Remington 700 in .30-06 Springfield, and the only difference between this rifle and the bog standard Remington 700 is the scope. Just like the Burris Eliminator that came out years ago, it gives you a range to the target and adjusts your point of aim accordingly.

The only real difference between this scope and the Eliminator is that (A) the ammo is matched to the gun, so you have a more

Hands-On with Sword International’s Semi-Auto .338 Lapua Rifle

Mon, 01/13/2014 - 19:30

First and foremost I apologize — we could not, in fact, shoot it. The guys running the booth had no ammo for it, or so they claimed. However, we did get a chance to heft it about and fondle the rifle, and it feels pretty damned good. For a semi-auto .338 Lapua rifle, that is . . .

There’s no doubt that the rifle is lightweight. In fact, I’m pretty sure that the scope is the heaviest component on the gun. Ever

Judge Strikes Down Gun Ban on Army Corps of Engineers’ Land

Mon, 01/13/2014 - 19:00

“The Corps promulgated a regulation generally forbidding possession of a firearm and other arms (with exceptions for hunting and use at authorized ranges) on land it controls, including 700 dams and associated recreation areas,” armsandthelaw.com writes re: Morris v. US Army Corps of Engineers, D. Idaho, Jan. 10, 2014. “The court strikes down the regulation on 2A grounds. The court reasons that the regulation affects the core Heller right of self-defense, and that possession in a tent is as protect

BREAKING: Tori Nonaka Dyes Her Hair Blue

Mon, 01/13/2014 - 18:31

We ran into Team GLOCK member Michelle Viscusi (left) and the colorful Tori Nonaka (right). The ladies told TTAG they loved the GLOCK 42. No surprise there: it’s an incredibly soft-shooting, pocketable pistol. Sure it’s a .380 but if anyone has a chance of proper shot placement during a DGU it’s these competitors. At least in theory. . .

Demo: MGI Hydra Modular Caliber-Changing Rifle

Mon, 01/13/2014 - 18:00

Think that the AR-15 rifle isn’t customizable enough? Well good news! The guys at MGI have come up with a rifle that allows you to swap barrels, calibers, and even magazine wells with only the aide of a small tool such as a golf tee. It’s not technically new — they were at SHOT last year — but it’s still cool and we haven’t tested one yet. But we’re working on that.

BREAKING: Man Shot and Killed for Texting at Lone Survivor Movie

Mon, 01/13/2014 - 17:21

“A filmgoer irked that other audience members were texting at a Mark Wahlberg war movie opened fire [with an as-yet-unidentified-but-definitely-not-a-GLOCK .380] in a Florida theater Monday, killing a man and wounding a woman,” nbcnews.com reports. “The Grove 16 Theatre in Wesley Chapel, north of Tampa, was evacuated after the shooting about 1:20 p.m. ET. A male suspect was in custody thanks to the quick thinking of a good Samaritan who detained the man until authorities arrived, said Doug Tobin, a spokesman for the Pasco County Sheriff&#82

New from Surefire: Dedicated .22LR Silencer and Pistol Slide Assembly

Mon, 01/13/2014 - 17:00

At long last, Surefire is introducing a dedicated .22LR silencer designed solely for the consumer market. Previous silencer products had been commercial runs of military contract silencers, but this one is designed from the ground up for anyone but LEO/MIL. The can comes apart for servicing and runs about $450 . . .

Also being introduced is a replacement slide assembly for the Block handgun, by Zevi. With Surefire’s branding, of course. No word on price or availability yet, but stay tuned.

LaRue Tactical Updates Pricing

Mon, 01/13/2014 - 16:30

I was I working this weekend and I got a call from the good people in Leander, Texas. They said they had a 16 inch 7.62 OBR in the works and they wanted money. Okay, no big deal. I can sell that.  But what he said next made me think that you probably won’t see many LaRue rifles for sale in the near future. . .

FC: what’s my price?
LaRue: 3399.95
FC: but I’m a dealer
LaRue: we’re not doing dealer pricing anymore
FC: thanks but no thanks.

Now, let’s get something straight.

I like Mark LaRue. He’s in business to make money as am I. They make a fine rifle at a price some people would consider insane but I appreciate a well built firearm and I love selling high end guns. It separates the men from the boys. I have nothing against their company.

The net effects to consumers and retailers are the following:

With the elimination of dealer disco

Looking for a Review? Search the Database!

Mon, 01/13/2014 - 16:00

Reliably, every single day, the Gun Reviews section of the website is in the top 10 for most pageviews. Which makes sense, since that’s what we’re known for. Almost a year ago I wrote and implemented a program that would let our readers parse through the massive reviews database to find the specific review they’re interested in reading, and it has been a massive success so far having been used literally millions of times. And it gets better.

Today I’m releasing the latest version, which includes a text based search function. You can now narrow your search to only specific models and manufacturers and find reviews even easier. You can find it under the heading “Search Reviews” on the Gun Reviews page. There are also a ton of optimizations that have gone on behind the scenes, but I

New from Caracal: Precision Bolt Action Rifle in .308

Mon, 01/13/2014 - 15:00

Caracal, the company in the UAE who makes Robert’s favorite carry gun, is extending their line of firearms. After introducing a 9mm carbine last year, they’re back with a bolt action .308 rifle. And man, is it nice.

The rifle hits all of my needs for a good precision gun, and then some. Not only is the stock fully adjustable, but the trigger adjusts too. And you can dictate the amount of roll in the second stage independent of everything else, even. Its a level of customization that one normally doesn’t see in rifles.

The gun also take

ATF Uncovered Counterfeit Colt M16A2 Rifles and M203 Grenade Launchers in Mexico

Mon, 01/13/2014 - 14:00

This report dates back to 2009; approximately the same time our friends at the ATF launched Operation Fast and Furious. But it’s new information to us and top secret too. “LAW ENFORCEMENT SENSITIVE. DO NOT DISSEMINATE OUTSIDE ATF WITHOUT APPROVAL.” Yeah we’re going to assume a web page available to the public is OK for release. Quite what it means – where did these counterfeit Colt M16A2 Rifles and M203 Grenade Launchers come from? – is another story. One which will probably never be told. But it’s not without humor. Specifically, “Analysts noted . . . the word ‘government’ stamped above the magazine well was missing the letter ‘n.’” So that’s why the ATF analysts get the big bucks. Click

Chris Dumm Shoots a Machine Gun for the First Time

Mon, 01/13/2014 - 13:00

Our man Chris had never fired a machine gun before. Last night, he fired a full auto SCAR-H and SCAR-L. It’s a hell of a way to kick off your machine gun shooting days. You can feel the smile, even though you can’t see it. Enjoy.

Airport Security Theater Revealed

Mon, 01/13/2014 - 12:00

We caught sight of this Vice video over at everydaynodaysoff.com. It’s so last year, but it proves what we’ve been saying since inception: airport security is a a joke. Actually, it’s worse than a joke because it lulls millions of people into a false sense of security (not to mention the billions of tax dollars pissed away on the overweight, under-educated blue shirted unionized goons charged with enforcing it). In an alternative world where things are as they should be, Americans would be “allowed” to exercise their natural, civil and Constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms whenever and wherever they travel within the United States. Self defense doesn’t end at airport security. Disarming people only makes them more vulnerable to attack. As we have seen time and time again.

Gear Review: Bradley Adjustable Cheek Rest

Mon, 01/13/2014 - 11:00

When I reviewed the Bradley Cheek Rest, I liked it. It was a simple and effective solution for my one major complaint about modern rifle design, and it performed its job well. The only thing missing was the ability to adjust the height of the cheek piece, since the rest was fixed in place. Now, Bradley has come out with a new cheek rest that can be adjusted to the user’s preference.

The cheek rest is, in almost every way, identical to the old one. It’s made out of the same material, uses the same solid mounting system, and feels exactly as solid as the old mount. The difference is in the cheek piece.

With the old cheek rest, there was no way to adjust it. The thing came set from the factory to a given height and that was it. But with this one, four screws hol

New from Cabot Guns: Damascus Steel 1911

Mon, 01/13/2014 - 09:57

Cabot Guns makes some of the world’s finest pistols. The company is also home to some of the world’s best PR. When it comes to gun pron pics, Cabot is second to none. And their new-for-SHOT gun is a genuine eye opener. Yes, Nick, I know that changing materials makes this a new gun like changing shoes makes me a new man. And yes, it’s a 1911 (which leaves no doubt as the advanced age of JMB’s timeless classic design). But Cabot’s Damascus 1911 is a world first! Maybe. “To our knowledge the Cabot Damascus 1911 is the first traditional folded steel Damascus pistol ever produced. Other pistols described as Damascus are formed from powdered Damascus, not the real thing. Born from a 50 layer block of American artisan made stainless steel by master Damascus craftsman Chad Nichols, the Cabot Damascus 1911 represents a new achievem

OMG! Concealed Carry in Public Buildings! OMG!

Mon, 01/13/2014 - 09:00

Keeping Public Buildings Free of Guns Proves Too Costly for Kansas Towns the nytimes.com headline proclaims. The idea that public buildings must either provide metal detector-style security theater or drop their gun bans must really rankle the pro-gun control folks at The Old Gray Lady. This is happening in government buildings! That’s where beneficent statists government functionaries work, for God’s sake! It’s not the enemy at the gate. It’s the enemy inside the gate! While savoring the schadenfreude, the paper reveals that “out of several thousand local government entities across the state, only about 160 places had sought an exemption

FPS Russia Is Back! And He’s Bad!

Sun, 01/12/2014 - 23:57

FPS Russia has been on hiatus for nine months. His unexplained absence/radio silence may or may not have anything to do with the still-unsolved point blank assassination of his business manager. Kyle’s on-cam mea culpa makes no mention of his brush with “gun violence.”  The most famous faux Russian since Yakov Smirnov claims his business troubles prevented him from producing his work. Yeah, right. ‘Cause these videos are so complicated. And YouTube rights are so difficult to manage. Anyway, slo-mo bullpup shotgun action on jars of paint is the dish of the day. Every time I critique this guy I get flame broiled. So I’ll just say this: I hope FPS gets his mojo back from whoever stole it. Know what I mean?

Hands-On with the FN-15 Rifle and Carbine

Sun, 01/12/2014 - 22:00

As we reported, FNH USA is coming out with their new FN-15 series firearms. The 16 inch carbine and the 20 inch rifle will retail for $1,149 each, meaning that it is perfectly positioned to give Colt a run for its money. And everyone else in the AR-15 market for that matter. We had an opportunity to test out the rifles at a special event held by FNH USA Sunday evening, and we have some slow motion video to go along with the commentary on the guns.

This isn’t a precision, high end rifle — this is an entry level AR-15. And I mean that for both the company and the c
