9mm or .45 ACP — which caliber is best for self-defense? It’s a debate that’s dragged on for decades. In recent years, there has been a definitive shift in preference toward the 9mm as shooting instructors, armed professionals, and even the FBI have abandoned larger calibers like .45 ACP and .40 S&W. But there was a time not too long ago when 9mm was frowned upon by those “in the know.” While looking through the company archives, we found an old, forgotten, unmarked VHS tape with a clear example of this bias against the lowly nine.

There’s only one reason to carry a small gun like the Glock 43 instead of a larger and more effective pistol: convenience. We don’t carry small guns because they’re the best to have in a fight, but because they’re easier to conceal and more comfortable to carry around all day. The Glock 43 was designed with convenience in mind, but even so, is not a fashion accessory — it’s a tool made for fighting your way out of a life-threatening encounter.

Since publishing the results of our huge handgun ammo ballistic testing project on Lucky Gunner Labs, there’s been a flood of questions, comments, and speculation about which loads are “the best”. There’s nothing wrong with wanting the best, but our ballistic testing only provides insight into one part of the larger picture that should be considered when choosing a self-defense load. You could easily make the argument that some loads are objectively good or objectively bad based on the test results alone, but the best load can change depending on the gun and the shooter. A few days ago, we released the results of our epic self-defense ammo ballistic gelatin project. We ordered a truckload of synthetic ballistics gelatin blocks from Clear Ballistics and tested 117 hollow-point loads in the four most popular self-defense calibers: .380 ACP, 9mm, 40S&W, and .45 ACP.
