We took the past two days off, and turned away from the Internet to focus on what really matters: family, friends, community, smoked meats, fried food, pies, cakes… Ok, I’ll stop because I’m starting to get hungry again, and leftovers beckon. But we at AllOutdoors do want to take a moment to say that we hope all of you had a very merry Christmas, and you’re set for a happy New Year. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed writing for you and interacting with you this year, and we’re looking forward to a killer 2015.

A Gransfors Bruks tool is something of a milestone in your road to total gear addiction. You’ve passed the point where everything needs to be pristine satin finishes and gleaming carbon fiber. You’ve long since blown by the infatuation with FRN and its weight saving benefits. At long last you have come full circle–back to the hatchet or axe aisle at your local hardware store. Except now, you know what makes run-of-the-mill hardware store tools garbage, and you an appreciate the resplendent beauty of a Gransfors Bruks tool.

It might seem funny to dedicate an entire article to sharpness, but it’s the heart of a knife. And sharpness is not as easy a concept to define as you might think.

Brain Fellhoelter makes some of my favorite knives in the world. His Compact Dauntless was my grail knife for years until I snagged one in the spring of this year. It did not disappoint, even with the high expectations. TuffWriter makes some of my favorite pens. The Ultimate Clicky has the odd distinction of being the only pen I have ever had that has held up for longer than a year to the torture test that is my work week. Even now, two years later, it still looks amazing (even better, as the aluminum as worn in quite nicely) and, of course, it still works. And we all know 47s, a flashlight brand made for and by flashaholics. So when all three of these folks collaborate on a light you know it has to be great. And while only a few of them have leaked out, the Bolt Light looks incredibly promising.

The National Rifle Association is offering a “For Women – By Women” Basic Pistol Instructor Course in Phoenix, Arizona from January 16 to January 18.

As if I needed another reason to dislike plinking piano music, this moronic (and probably criminal) anti-gun video is rife with it. If you don’t wish to subject yourself to that (you can watch it down below), I’ll save you the misery:

In my last post about the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s announcement that comedian Bill Engvall would be the featured entertainer for the 2015 SHOT Show’s State of the Industry dinner I described the comedian as “pro-gun.”

A pro-gun comedian who enjoys hunting and target shooting will replace Jay Leno as the featured entertainer at the 2015 SHOT Show’s State of the Industry Dinner, the National Shooting Sports Foundation announced today.

Hunting is filled with lore, and hunters are always on the lookout for more information. But we have to realize that not every campfire story is true – and that many hunters are just plain wrong about some things.

I have been asked for a long time to lay out all of my EDC maintenance stuff.  I did this in a shorter form a long time ago, here.  Over time I have refined and upgraded what I use.  And then I found Kevin Kelley’s Cool Tools and I starting thinking about this stuff more carefully.  I tested and refined this set of things until I found the exact right tools for the job.  For example, I tried out three or four different formulations of Loc-Tite.  I did that so you don’t have to.

Targets should be cheap, right? I mean, you’re just going to shoot them full of holes, after all. And sometimes, paper targets can be affordable… but targets that let you see your shots, like Birchwood Casey Shoot-N-C and Caldwell Orange Peel, can cost more than $2 each.

I’ve been thinking recently about the way that the Satanists are having a field day with so many laws that Christians are passing under the “freedom of religion” banner: stunts like putting a statue of Satan next to the Ten Commandments, or Satanist plans to hand out literature to school kids in Orange County. What if, I wonder, certain groups were to take advantage of open carry laws in the same manner.

I was recently a guest on Austin talk radio, “Come and Talk It” with Michael Cargill. Michael is the owner of Central Texas Gun Works, and he just started this gun-focused radio show a few months ago.

When is the last time you saw a deer rifle without a scope on it? I am betting it has been quite a few deer seasons ago. I think it has been 1970 since I saw a deer rifle in the woods using only open sights. I remember this because it was my first deer rifle, a Winchester Model 94 in 30-30. I bought the rifle at J.C. Penney for $66.

What comes to mind first when you read “a rifle designed for female shooters” — pink furniture? With some gun companies, that would have been a good guess. With Spike’s Tactical Pure Estrogen model, the color is anything you want, as long as it’s black. It does have other worthwhile features to compensate for the absence of colorful hotness: an enhanced trigger pack with anti-walk pins, a thoroughly skeletonized free-float forend with full-length rails and QD receptacles front and back, Magpul telestock and Ergo grip. Recognizing generally shorter stature and lesser upper body strength of the typical female shooter relative to men, the barrel is 14.5″ with a permanently affixed, highly effective compensator. That, combined with a mid-length gas system, gives this carbine fairly mild recoil at the full-up weight around 6 2/3 pounds.
