We review a ton of gear here at AllOutdoor, and as a last-minute “thank you” to our faithful readers we’ve put together this list of what is essentially our “Greatest Hits of 2014.” The list below represents some of our favorite review items, with an emphasis on out-of-the-box suggestions that you might not have thought of on your own.

You’ve been hunting hard, and the big buck you’ve been after finally shows up. Every hair stands on end, and shivers chase themselves up and down your spine.

Then he hops up on a doe and starts giving her the business.

Would you shoot the buck off of the doe? Many would; with a steady rest there’s not much chance that you’d hit the doe. Would you wait until the deed was done, and risk him running away afterward? Or would you let him go?

What would you have done?

There is one and only reason that I own a Walther PPK: because of the Bond films. Every boy eventually wants to just like Bond, and the Walther PPK is a cool and sexy pistol, but hardly a modern defensive firearm. The allegedly underpowered and supposedly unreliable PPK, with its goofy operational requirements, is still the embodiment of of a “10” on the hotness scale.

Well, it has happened–PDW has released their first folder. I covered their dog tag OPMT here and it was a herald of things to come, but I would have never predicted this–a traditional, multi-bladed folder. After all, PDW is the brain child of Patrick Ma, among others, and he is the progenitor of the Dauntless Project–a series of ultra modern folders. So to see a bailed, bolstered, and bone-handled folder as their first release was pretty stunning.

Here’s another one for your AllOutdoors bucket list. If you get anywhere near the Knoxville, Tennessee area for business or pleasure, let me highly recommend this side trip to a super unique definitely one-of-a-kind retail store. Furthermore, if you are a dyed-in-the-wool knife person, either for practical use or as a collector, then a visit here is an absolute must.

Ah, guns. They can make the world so much more civil.

Like when a 28-year-old crook reportedly decided to enter a Red Lobster restaurant, use a gun to threaten customers and employees, and steal the cash drawer from a cash register.

Wait, that’s not the civil part.

After he took the drawer and fled out the back of the restaurant, he reportedly confronted a customer who was attempting to flee the area.

Oops.

The customer was armed with a concealed handgun. He drew his gun and fired one round. The robber, understandably shaken, dropped the cash drawer and fled.

Police later arrested the baddie.

If the customer hadn’t been armed, it’s possible that nobody ever would have taught the crook any manners. Now he knows that there are consequences to his actions. Bad actions generally beget bad consequences.

Most of us learn that lesson without having to be shot at. It’s the rest of the population that cause us to own and carry guns.

As you can see in the video below, the young lady behind this video means business. And she’s seeking funding to make a 90-minute motion picture “intended for all audiences that will serve as a wake-up call to all Americans.”

I recently saw this thing called a solar air lantern, and thought it looked interesting. The more I look at it, the more I think it’s a cheesy, gimmicky product that won’t be around for very long. But hey, I’ve been wrong before.

I recently ran across this knife online, and had to share it here. Most of us have seen the cheesy credit-card-size multi-tools – heck, some of us even own one or two. But unlike those, the Cardsharp looks like a quality piece that actually works well.

Few things create more excitement on the part of deer hunters than getting that first look at their prized buck mount back from their taxidermist. The result is either one of ecstatic pride, or sometimes dreadful disappointment. It need not ever be the later if the proper procedures are taken to prepare a buck’s head for the mounting work.

Recently I reviewed the Heckler & Koch P30L, and frankly am in love with the pistol — the quality and the features are all top of the line. As a defensive pistol it has a level of refinement that can only be seen on Sig Sauers, but with features unique to H&K.

Many would wonder how you could actually upgrade the already feature loaded P30 series of pistols, but more than a few believe that the P30 series can perform even better with just a few tweaks.

Savannah went on her first deer hunt with her father. She shook hard for about five minutes after because of pure adrenaline. Watch her excitement in this video! Have you taken your children or grandchildren out to hunt recently?

Sometimes fulfilling an item on the bucket list takes time. It took me forty years to lay my hands on a rifle chambered for the venerable old .358 Winchester. I actually did find one at a gun show once, but the walnut stock still had the halftrack tread marks all across the wood. I passed.

More than 13 years ago, I wrote an article about the Remington Model 700 and a CBS news segment that alleged the trigger could be fired by switching the safety to the “fire” position. At the time, I concentrated on the sad case of Gus Barber, who was killed when his mother switched a Model 700 rifle from “safe” to “fire” and thus fired a round through a horse trailer and into her son.

Tallahassee, FL – Two weeks ago, a young attorney and Florida State University (FSU) graduate whose name I refuse to publicize reportedly entered the campus library and shot three people, sending students into a panic. Moments later, police killed the crook after he fired a shot at police.

Oklahoma City, OK – Kinney Glasson, 33, called the police around 3:00 AM. He told them an intruder had come into his bedroom, he’d grabbed a gun to defend himself, but shot his wife instead of the bad guy because the intruder jostled his arm. Police searched the neighborhood for suspects, but never found any.

While mountain biking in Jasper, Alberta, a man was chased through the woods by a massive grizzly bear! What would you do this in this situation? Especially when you get to 2:18 minutes in the video.
