Survivalists vs. Preppers Highlighted in this Week’s “America Unplugged,” June 12

Wed, 06/11/2014 - 13:25

“I’m a survivalist, not a prepper. Prepping is replacing one dependent for another,” states Robert Allen, U.S. Army Combat Engineer, owner of Sigma 3 Survival School and featured on this week’s America Unplugged, exclusively on Sportsman Channel, Thurs., June 12 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Imagine a world where Americans no longer rely on local government for electricity, water, sanitation, heating, and cooling. This lifestyle of living “off the grid” is how more than 180,000 Americans choose to live every day. Hosted by former U.S. Navy SEAL/Sniper Cade Courtley, America Unplugged...

Radetec AmmoControl LED Round Count Advisor

Wed, 06/11/2014 - 13:23

I don’t have ice water in my veins. I have friends who do and I’ve always envied the quality, but under pressure, I often operate in panic mode. I simply don’t have the ability to hold the broad awareness under stress situations that’s often required in 3-gun competitions and tactical pistol shooting. I’m aware this would likely be a handicap should I ever get into a gunfight, so I try to improve my abilities by shooting competitive events that generate high pressure to improve my tendencies. In a gunfight (or a tactical match for that matter), you should never run your gun dry to...

Wed, 06/11/2014 - 11:45

Russell Nielson, a track and field athlete at Southern Utah University in Cedar City, caught his first wiper late last month. It also happened to be a state record. According to the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR), Nielson reeled in the fish from Newcastle Reservoir on May 21 just west of the college town. The wiper---a hybrid of striped and white bass---was certified by state biologists at 11 pounds and two ounces, beating out the old state record by five ounces. The fight only...

Video: Five Bear Cubs Scamper Up Tree to Avoid Male

Wed, 06/11/2014 - 07:38

In the video below, five black bear cubs quickly scale a tree to avoid a confrontation with a wandering male. Cubs learn how to climb trees beginning at about eight weeks and will retain the skill for the rest of their lives. Trees offer more than a temporary sanctuary for black bears---they are a source of food, a vantage point, a safe bed, and a message board. http://youtu.be/r2VwF-KhNz0 Black bears are excellent climbers. Their powerful hind legs and innate balance means that even large bears are able to scale trees, making it inadvisable to seek cover in one during a bear...

Fun and Games with the .257 Weatherby Magnum

Wed, 06/11/2014 - 07:35

I’ve got a thing for unusual calibers. Probably because I’m a reloading addict. I just don’t care that commercial rounds of 300 AAC Blackout cost over a buck each, that .357 SIG pistol ammo is crazy expensive compared to 9x19mm, or that no one stocks 6.8 SPC. I don’t know why, but these oddball cartridges are some of my favorites. When I had a chance to start some serious tinkering with a .257 Weatherby Magnum, how could I resist? Word is that the .257 Weatherby Magnum was Roy Weatherby’s personal favorite, and that’s saying something. Developed starting back in 1944, it’s a...

Chasing the Black Bear Grand Slam

Wed, 06/11/2014 - 07:34

Sheep hunters have their grand slam, archers have the bowhunting super slam, even whitetail hunters have the whitetail slam. Shouldn’t black bear hunters have a grand slam? I have no idea how many people have actually killed one of each of the four major color phases of black bears. I suspect it’s a very small number, and the number of hunters who have achieved a "black bear grand slam" with a bow is even smaller yet. I am trying to be one of those hunters and on May 19, 2014, I bagged a cinnamon color phase bear which gave me the third of the four colors. Here’s a little...

Up Your Odds for Michigan Muskie

Tue, 06/10/2014 - 22:19

With Lake St. Clair and the Detroit River officially opening for muskie fishing last weekend, the season for these freshwater monsters is now in full swing across Michigan. The cold winter and spring have fish in way-early-season patterns, which means your chance at hooking up with the so-called fish of 10,000 casts is pretty good. “We’re kind of just into early summer mode for these fish with our late spring so it’s all about weed growth,” said Will Schultz of Michigan Muskie Guide Service (616-490-0319). Find growing green weeds and...

Video: DemolitionRanch Roasts the Top 15 YouTube Gun Channels

Tue, 06/10/2014 - 15:46

The majority of firearm-focused YouTube channels exist because of a deep enthusiasm for and appreciation of firearms. Naturally, the most entertaining personalities on these have become digital celebrities in their own right with audiences in the hundreds of thousands. This week, DemolitionRanch roasted the top 15. Hopefully, they don't roast him back with slightly more vitriol. If anything, a number of popular YouTubers---such as MattV2099 and GY6vids---praised the performance. "Man I can't stop laughing," Colion Noir commented on the video. "I resemble those remarks," wrote...

Glock Executives Indicted on Charges of Conspiracy, Money Laundering

Tue, 06/10/2014 - 14:54

Last week the US Attorney's Office for the District of Kansas announced that two high-ranking managers employed by Glock, Inc., along with their wives, had been charged with taking more than $1 million in bribes from 2003 through 2011. According to the indictment, Kansas-based firearms distributor John Sullivan Ralph secretly paid the Glock executives, James Dutton and Welcome D. Wood, to receive preferential treatment for his company, Global Guns & Hunting Inc. In addition to giving Ralph's business priority access to a limited stock of firearms, Dutton and Wood enabled Ralph to sell...

SCI Members and Exhibitors Cry Foul over Proposed For-profit Booking Agency

Tue, 06/10/2014 - 08:15

How did non-profit organization Safari Club International (SCI) manage to upset a lion's share of their loyal members and exhibitors? Via budget notes published by SCI as well as correspondence by prominent chapter members in opposition (and SCI’s official reply), a recent move to launch a for-profit LLC as a commissionable booking agency has members and exhibitors crying foul. The new business, based in Arizona, would earn a 15 percent commission on booking hunts worldwide with “top tier” outfitters. Rumor that Cabela’s is getting out of the booking business may have facilitated...

Massive 843.7-pound Marlin Caught During Gulf Coast Billfish Tourney

Tue, 06/10/2014 - 07:44

Deb Hebert has been involved in life-or-death situations and weathered the fury of hurricanes, but she has seldom been in a situation as exhilarating or draining as the one she faced during the Mississippi Gulf Coast Billfish Classic (MCGBC). Hebert, an emergency room doctor and lieutenant colonel who has flown with the Keesler Air Force Base’s famed Hurricane Hunters, hooked into the first blue marlin of her two-year fishing career on the Iona Louise, the boat owned by Joe Hudson, her boyfriend, based out of Montgomery, Alabama. More than three hours later, the petite Hebert...

Hunters Called to Manage 2,400 “Destructive” Mule Deer in Santa Catalina

Mon, 06/09/2014 - 15:44

Although it may not look like it, the island of Santa Catalina in southern California was originally a barren rock. All wildlife now living on the island arrived over the ocean, and not all species are welcome. The Catalina Island Conservancy spent years removing invasive wildlife and preserving the island's more traditional inhabitants---foxes, bald eagles, and plants that occur nowhere else in the world. The threats to the island's delicate ecological balance are many, such as a herd of bison brought over in the early 20th century for a film shoot. Conservationists have removed thousands of...

Video: Rare Video of Polar Bear Hunting, Finding a Mate Surfaces

Mon, 06/09/2014 - 14:57

The US Geological Survey recently released a video of a female polar bear hunting in the Beaufort Sea and interacting with a potential mate. The video is believed to be the first ever taken from a wild polar bear in the Arctic Sea and is part of a new study to see how the animals respond to sea ice loss. "We deployed two video cameras in 2013, but did not get any footage because the batteries weren’t able to handle the Arctic temperatures,” said USGS bear researhcer Dr. Todd Atwood in a press release. “We used...

Mon, 06/09/2014 - 14:56

A deer family was reunited late last month due to the efforts of Andy Wooten and Taylor Sinquefield, who rescued two newborn fawns from Georgia's Lake Oconee. According to WSB-TV, the men were working on a landscaping project in Putnam County when they noticed a distressed deer call coming from the nearby lake. They arrived to find a doe nearby and a fawn trapped in low-lying branches with its head barely above the water. “I believe what happened is it was probably born at...

Loss of Vermont’s Oldest Fish Hatchery Hits Anglers Hard

Mon, 06/09/2014 - 11:26

It has been three years since Tropical Storm Irene swept through Vermont and flushed nearly 90,000 fish from the Roxbury hatchery, yet the facility is still waiting on the money needed to restore it to working condition. The hatchery is the oldest in Vermont and raised about 70,000 trout every year---roughly 30 percent of the state's yearling trout production. Despite its importance to anglers in the state, hatchery officials are having a hard time convincing federal agencies to fund Roxbury's restoration. "We anticipated some sort of loss, but not to the extent of what we saw," Roxbury...
