Catching Cantankerous Crappie

Tue, 06/03/2014 - 13:37

Crappie are finicky. Maybe not to the level of trout, but certainly close. One day they are biting red hooks, not silver, only hungry for black jigs with flecks of white hair. As Arthur Farrell pulled in his eighth slab of the night, he leaned back against the rocky bank and stared at the stars overhead. The Milky Way was in full bloom and the cold, flat wind that steadily blew off the water seemed to make the night that much more clear. A few boats drifted around the causeway where Arthur fished. It was growing colder as midnight neared and from the little he’d paid attention to the...

Two Delicious Venison Burger and Roast Recipes

Tue, 06/03/2014 - 08:20

We are half way to the fall hunting season and you still have some venison in the freezer. Here are two recipes--one for burger and one for roasts--that will have your mouth watering for more, and help you clear out the freezer for the next round of fine eating. Many people have venison in their freezers for long periods of time because they really do not know how to fix it properly. That doesn’t happen at our house, and the venison goes fast. I have a handful of recipes that I use a lot. My family, and occasionally my friends, rave over the venison dishes I prepare. So if...

Mon, 06/02/2014 - 15:39

Scrounging for food can be a tiring process, and one black bear in Daytona Beach decided to sleep off its recent meal by taking a rest in a hammock. According to WESH, local photographer Rafael Torres shot several pictures of the bear as it tried getting into the hammock and finally got comfortable last Thursday. "He got in the hammock like he was a tourist or something," said Vincent James, who owns the property and the hammock. "Then something spooked him and he ran right...

Boy Scout Auction Sells $200,000 Worth of Elk Antlers

Mon, 06/02/2014 - 15:17

Visitors to Wyoming's 25,000-acre National Elk Refuge may find a strange sight during certain times of the year: hundreds of Boy Scouts combing the woods in search of elk antlers. Visitors are normally barred from shed hunting inside the refuge, but the Boy Scouts have a longstanding agreement with the refuge's managers. The deal allows the Jackson District Boy Scouts free roam across the refuge to pick up any sheds they find. The Scouts do all the hard work (more than 2,000 hours of gathering, preparing, and auctioning off the antlers) while the refuge keeps about 75 percent of the auction...

False Alarm: Eggs Found in the Upper Mississippi River Not from Asian Carp

Mon, 06/02/2014 - 14:12

In March, the US Geological Survey (USGS) announced that Asian carp eggs were discovered as far north as Lynxville, Wisconsin. The discovery would have marked the furthest expansion of the invasive fish, more than 250 miles from the closest documented population of Asian carp. For states still preparing preventative measures---like Minnesota and Wisconsin---it meant that time was running out. On May 22, the USGS stated that they had made a mistake: extensive genetic analysis proved that the eggs instead...

Safe Envy: What to Look for When Buying a Gun Safe

Mon, 06/02/2014 - 12:35

I had never seen this strong, confident man jealous of another man’s anything. The day we opened a friend’s safe, though, I saw it. Definitely safe envy. The strong door opened with all the long guns organized just so, and all the handguns were properly in their place. I watched his eyes glisten, his mouth drop open just a tad. No Barretts or Lapuas were inside, either, just run-of-the-mill hunting rifles, shotguns, and pistols. The envy was in the organization and the structure that housed them---a big, beautiful, fireproof gun safe. Here are five things that might be helpful...

Ten Tips on Teaching Kids How to Fish

Mon, 06/02/2014 - 07:52

Studies conducted by the American Sportfishing Association show that 90 percent of today’s anglers got their start in fishing before they were 20 years old; 70 percent were introduced to fishing by the time they were 12. Most of us started fishing even earlier than that. Many education experts agree that age 10 is a good time to introduce a child to fishing, and that kids as young as five can pick up the sport---and benefit from it---with a little guidance. With National Fishing and Boating week coming up in June, there are events organized from coast to coast to offer opportunities to...

Injured Deer Enters North Carolina Hospital

Fri, 05/30/2014 - 16:21

Employees at the Carolinas Medical Center in Concord found themselves dealing with a rather strange patient on Thursday: an injured buck. According to WBTV, the deer had apparently come from a nearby wooded area and jumped over a hedge into the hospital parking lot, straight onto a parked vehicle. The buck shattered the car's windshield, injuring itself in the head. Surveillance cameras then caught the deer sprinting through a loading dock as workers looked on in surprise. Hospital staff...

The BAREBOW! Chronicles: The Longbow Does It!

Fri, 05/30/2014 - 16:15

September, 1997. It had been three years since Karen accompanied me and my two sons on a “family” big game hunt to Mackay Lake, courtesy of Gary and Bertha Jaeb of True North Safaris. When I discovered in the spring of 1997 that my younger son, Reagan, would be free to join me for another late-August/early-September bowhunt up there in the Northwest Territories, I called Gary right away and asked if he could possibly squeeze us into his Warburton Bay camp for the hunt that began around August 30. I had always wanted to try a hunt out of that smaller camp, because it was down near...

Vemont Bowfisherman Catches Largest Fish in State Records

Fri, 05/30/2014 - 14:58

In the 45 years that the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department has been keeping track of record-sized fish, nobody has ever seen one heavier than Darren Ouelette's 44-pound, six-ounce common carp. Ouelette first sighted the massive fish swimming near some flooded trees in Lake Champlain on May 20. After the bowfisherman arrowed the carp, it took him 20 minutes to bring it in. “When Darren finally got it in close, I tried to net it but I could only fit its head in the net,” said Taylor Patterson, who was bowfishing with Ouelette at the time. “I ended up just grabbing it in the mouth by...

Government’s ‘Operation Choke Point’ Under Scrutiny for Targeting Gun Sellers

Fri, 05/30/2014 - 12:19

An initiative by the United States Department of Justice that targets banks that work with businesses at a "high risk" for fraud has included firearms and ammunition sellers in its list of "dangerous" merchant categories, leading some shooting sports retailers to claim they're being politically discriminated against. The effort, known as "Operation Choke Point," was ostensibly begun in 2013 to investigate banks associated with businesses involved in get-rich-quick ploys, Ponzi schemes, and other "questionable" pursuits. However, in the past several months firearms retailers and companies...
