Massachusetts Lawmakers to Consider Partially Lifting Sunday Hunting Ban

Fri, 05/30/2014 - 07:55

Massachusetts is one of 10 states in the United States that still forbids hunting on Sundays, but that may soon change with a bill headed to the state's House of Representatives. According to The Patriot Ledger, the bill will not do away with the ban entirely but instead lift it for the last three months of the year---deer season. If passed, the bill will allow Massachusetts bowhunters to harvest deer on a Sunday like they normally would any other day of the week. "“It’s a great idea for...

Photographers Find Rare Harpy Eagle Nest in the Amazon

Fri, 05/30/2014 - 07:39

Despite being the largest and most powerful bird of prey in the Western Hemisphere, the harpy eagle is now threatened across its entire native range in Central and South America. Finding a harpy eagle nest in the Amazon is an event so rare that wildlife photographer Jeff Cremer immediately booked a flight to Peru after receiving a Facebook message indicating that two of his colleagues had spotted one of the elusive bird's treetop nurseries. The trip was a massive success, allowing the photographers to capture images and video of the evasive eagles. "We were incredibly lucky to be able to...

Your Role in the Access Problem

Thu, 05/29/2014 - 16:09

Spoilage. Remember that word from high school economics class? Spoilage refers to the goods or services we have but couldn’t or didn’t consume before they expired: the airplane that leaves the ground with empty seats or the hotel that lets a night pass with vacant rooms. It’s waste, like brown bananas in the produce aisle. The access problem in the outdoors is caused by spoilage, not a lack of acres. I propose we call the problem “Latent Access,” and that we get busy fixing it. “Access to quality hunting and fishing ground is the most significant challenge facing the future...

Prep for Fall: Spring and Summer Food Plots and Scouting

Thu, 05/29/2014 - 15:25

For many of us hunters, springtime and the approaching summer make us start to think about the upcoming season. Thinking about how great the fall will be is all well and good, but taking action in the spring and summer months to enhance your chances of a successful hunting season later in the year (and beyond) is even better. To that end, two of the main things hunters should have their minds on this time of year are providing nutrition for local huntable wildlife and scouting. Feed ‘em Have you ever been driving through cattle country and come across a feed lot? You’d know it...

GUNVOTE 2014: Don’t Risk Your Rights

Thu, 05/29/2014 - 12:39

REGISTER TO VOTE, STAY INFORMED AND GUNVOTE The 2014 elections, particularly the most closely contested races for U.S. Senate seats, offer two possibilities. The first is for our industry and consumers to join forces with other pro-Second Amendment groups and individuals to lead the way in electing enough new pro-gun lawmakers to ensure that the anti-gun agenda can't pass in either chamber of Congress during the final two years of the Obama administration. The alternative is the very real prospect of anti-gun candidates succeeding in enough close races to provide the handful of votes needed...
