Urban Planners and Wildlife Conservation Experts Convene to Connect Cities with Nature
Less than an hour’s drive through the scenic Mississippi River towns north of St. Louis sits Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), home to one of the largest concentrations of wintering bald eagles in the U.S., and thousands of birds as they rest and refuel during spring and fall migrations. Many refuge visitors come from the St. Louis metro area to hike, bird-watch and simply connect with their natural world.
Like Two Rivers NWR, many national wildlife refuges are within just an hour’s drive of one or more major metropolitan...

Earlier today, The IFW’s advisory council accepted the department’s recommendation to reduce the number of moose permits available for the 2014 season. This fall, the department will issue 3,095 permits statewide, down from the 4,110 that were available last year.
“Based upon the research of our biologists, I feel it is prudent to decrease the number of female moose permits...
Always the Bridesmaid: The Walleye Side of the Fishing Industry
Cursed with a passion to catch sharp-toothed, white-spot-on-the-tail, glass-eyed fish, a serious walleye angler will have to settle for a rough ride. To make it big in the fishing industry, all the money is on the bass side. However, some anglers can’t shake the chase of the walleye more than big money or fame. If that is you, here are stages to cross---if you're ready.
The National Walleye Tour (NWT) is the biggest stage for the pro-angler side of walleye fishing. Title sponsored by Cabela’s, the circuit is only in its second season...
Belgian Angler Hooks Potential Record Golden Mahseer
The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) recently announced that it will be reviewing a 44-pound golden mahseer for the title of all-tackle world record. Golden mahseer are known to be among the best fighters of freshwater fish, and can be incredibly fast for their size. The golden variety is the largest of the mahseer genera of carp and can generally be found in the Indian Himalayas or Nepal. The...

Video: Great White Shark Chomps on Inflatable Boat
A film crew on an inflatable boat got a surprise when they attracted a great white shark off the coast of South Africa recently. That surprise soon turned to concern when the fish began biting---and deflating---the vessel's rubber sponsons. The crew, which was filming for the popular YouTube channel MaxAnimal, were able to pilot the partially-deflated craft back to shore without injury. While the encounter may have put the filmmakers' boat out of commission for that day, it did net them a firsthand recording of a shark attack.

Bassmaster Elite Series Season Turns the Corner Next Week at Lake Dardanelle
Mark Davis shines as an odds-on favorite in the May 15-18 Bassmaster Elite Series at Lake Dardanelle out of Russellville, Ark., the fifth of nine events of the 2014 season.
An Arkansas native, Davis lives in Mount Ida, less than a two-hour drive away from the 55-mile-long, 34,300-acre impoundment on the Arkansas River in northwestern Arkansas. A home-state angler is always a favorite to win.
But surprisingly, Davis has a short tournament history on Dardanelle. He doesn’t even fish it just for fun.
“With 40,000-acre Lake Ouachita in my backyard, I’ve never had much reason to go...
