Big ships having problems with menhaden

Thu, 10/08/2015 - 16:08

Vessels on the Houston Ship Channel faced big problems this summer from menhaden which showed up in record size schools and temporarily idled at least 17 ships

The young fish get sucked into the ships’ filter systems that suck in seawater to cool off the engines, causing a shutdown on the engines. Without being able to run their engines, the big ships hauling heavy loads can’t steer. No collisions were reported, but the issue has led ships to run aground in the past.

The menhaden problem was encountered from early July to early September. Dry winters followed by wet springs, plus high salinity, contributed to the menhaden population boom. Menhaden tend to stay in water depths of one to eight feet.

Thu, 10/08/2015 - 09:39

While I was out shooting this summer I noticed that my FNX Tactical had some crazy flex in the magwell.  It was so unbelievable I took a short video with it on my phone and was later accused of using an airsoft gun or computer generated graphics:

The Corcl: An All-New Kind of Boat

Tue, 10/06/2015 - 09:00

I’m betting you’ve never heard of the Corcl before. In fact, I’d bet a lot—because this is a brand-new type of boat, which was just introduced to the world this past summer. In fact, it’s so new that you’ll have trouble finding it in stores and if you decide to buy one, you’ll probably have to do it through the Corcl web site. Why should you care? Because these things are pure, unadulterated fun.

Giant Intake Vortex – Denison Dam, Lake Texoma (VIDEO)

Mon, 10/05/2015 - 13:40

Check out this drone video of an intake vortex at Lake Texoma:

The video descriptions explains what is causing the vortex:

“Here’s a very unique view of an intake vortex, created as water enters the Denison Dam spillway on Lake Texoma.

The vortex is approximately 8 feet in diameter and capable of sucking in a full-sized boat, so please heed all safety buoys and caution signs.

This is a normal occurrence when flood waters are released from the reservoir via flood control gates.”

Check Out This Rare “Sofa Shark” That Was Caught Near Scotland

Mon, 10/05/2015 - 12:27

Marine biologists off the coast of Scotland have caught an aesthetically challenged creature that has drawn derisive howls and pointed fingers from gawking crowds around the world.

It has been compared to a “blob” and beaten up on by cyberbullies who wouldn’t dare look this creature in the eye and utter such things.

But damn it, this animal has a name. He’s called the “sofa shark.” A little sensitivity, please.

Boat Hull Basics: Steps, Deep-V Deadrise, and More

Tue, 09/29/2015 - 09:00

When it comes to boat hulls, there’s a whole lot of misinformation out there. What’s a deep-V? Ask 10 different people, and you’ll get 10 different answers. What do steps do in a hull bottom? Again, everyone seems to have a different opinion. There’s just one problem: in reality, only one of the answers or opinions you’ll get are correct.

Oops! Wal-Mart’s ‘Gun Oil’ turns out to be something you won’t believe (VIDEO)

Wed, 09/23/2015 - 18:37

Accidental investigative reporter Jamie Lee Bracey was shopping in the guns section at his local Alabama Wal-Mart last week when he found “Gun Oil,” a water-based solution for topical use only.

The H2O piqued his interest because he’s always known water to be a bad thing to apply to metal. After reading the instructions he learned that “Gun Oil” wasn’t for a literal gun, it was for your … figurative gun.

His Facebook video has since garnered more than 1.6 million views.
