10 North American Animals You Definitely Can’t Outrun and Why

Tue, 06/09/2015 - 10:52

Odds are that you already know that the average human can’t outrun the animals on this list. More than likely, you’ve heard from other hunters or hikers what you should do in case of an encounter. You’ve already been told how mind-blowingly fast a 1,000-pound grizzly, with its winter weight no less, can be. Yet there’s a difference between hearing and seeing it for yourself. Telling you that a brown bear can run over 30 miles per hour is simply giving you a number. Showingyou a bear running alongside a car, however, is pretty enlightening.

Texas Game Wardens Arrested the Whole NORML Boat at Red Bull’s Cliff Dive Event

Tue, 06/09/2015 - 10:41

Every year, the energy drink company Red Bull sponsors a touring cliff-diving competition. (Cliff-diving, for those unfamiliar, is the sport of jumping off a cliff). The Texas stop on the tour, late last month at Possum Kingdom Lake, sure looked fun, the type of event where you might expect to find people partying. Among local participants was a group of five volunteer wake-boarders from the Dallas-Fort Worth chapter of NORML, the marijuana advocacy group. But, if officers from the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife are to be believed, there are some people at the cliff dive who do not approve of the stench of marijuana.

Mon, 06/08/2015 - 10:25

After more than an hour fighting a halibut larger—and probably older—than he was, Swedish angler Erik Axner jumped into the freezing waters off Norway’s Loften Islands to release his catch. The 24-year-old hooked the massive fish during a recent trip to northern Norway and called it the catch of a lifetime.

“It was a dream fish—almost two meters long and incredibly well fed, thick and wide,” he told the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet

Video: This Is the Craziest Turkey Headshot You Will Ever See

Mon, 06/08/2015 - 08:32

Turkey hunters always want to aim for the head so they can dispatch the animals as quickly as possible and so they can save as much meat as possible. There are even companies that make braodheads specifically designed to “decapitate” turkeys. This archer was using a Bullhead broadhead, and let’s just say it made an extremely clean cut.

The turkey’s eyes are still blinking on the ground after this mind-blowing shot.

This video is pretty graphic as it shows a turkey decapitation and the aftermath, so please be advised…

CCA STAR Tournament: Second Tagged Redfish Winner Confirmed

Sat, 06/06/2015 - 10:00

On Saturday Morning, May 30, 2015, Hemphill resident Michael Gibbs was hanging out at a beach house he and his wife rented for the weekend on the West side of Galveston. Gibbs was waiting for his cousin to pick him up in his boat to go fishing. While he waited on the cousin who was sleeping in recovering from the long drive down the night before, Gibbs decided to do a little casting off the pier behind the beach house. To his delight, he managed to pick up two nice flounder right off the pier. A few casts later, he hooked into another fish. After a good fight, Gibbs flipped the fish onto the pier. He gained control of the fish flopping along the dock, and low and behold, he noticed it was redfish with a tag in it. Being over forty, Gibbs couldn’t quite make out the fine print so he carried the redfish up to the beach house to see if his wife could read the tag for him. Gibbs first told his wife not to get excited just yet because he had caught fish before with tags that were for research. Gibbs’ wife responded, “Whatever” and proceeded to examine the tag. After close inspection all Gibbs’ wife could say was “STAR”!!! Still a bit skeptical, Gibbs told his wife, “Don’t mess with me.” His wife said, “Mike, I promise!” “OMG!” said Gibbs, “If I had only known this fish was worth a truck and boat package, I think I might...

CCA STAR Tournament: First Tagged Redfish Winner Confirmed

Fri, 06/05/2015 - 12:56

Hempstead resident, Scott Hajovsky set up a fishing trip, Thursday, May 28th with some friends. They met up at Eagle Point, Galveston Bay around daybreak. The weather was fair with moderate winds. After a week of rainstorms, the water was so fresh that the bait camp was adding salt to the tanks. They managed to get some live shrimp and croaker, then launched the boat, headed to their first fishing spot, dropped anchor, and casted there bait assortment. Fishing was slow. Hajovsky only managed to catch and release an undersized trout and lose an undersized flounder at the boat so the friends decided to head across East Bay in search of clearer water. The next fishing spot looked more like chocolate milk and yielded no fish, so they decided to head southeast to a more attractive spot where the water condition was better. The sun started to encroach on high noon as they dropped anchor to give it another try. The bait was slowly starting to die from the lack of salt, but worked in one of Hajovsky’s friend’s favor loading the boat with black drum. Hajovsky managed to catch rocks and snap lines, while his friend continued to pull in the fish and talk smack. Hajovsky finally hooked up and got a fish to the boat, but it turned out to be a rat red. Meanwhile, the other friend caught a black drum, a slot redfish, and a...

Fri, 06/05/2015 - 12:19

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission announced on Thursday that a new state fishing record has been broken.

Over the weekend, Bill Stewart of Weeki Wachee landed a 69-pound, eight-ounce blue catfish from the Choctoawhatchee River. According to Walton Outdoors, the catch came as part of the third annual Choctawhatchee Catfish Roundup tournament in Caryville.
