Savage Adds Two New Color Options to the Model 42 Takedown
I’ve long been a fan of the Savage Model 24 over and under rifles. They’d been made since the late 30s, and were available in a myriad of rifle and shotgun caliber and gauge combos. Most of those old Model 24s were blued steel with wood stocks. The idea of a compact rifle/shotgun combo as a camp or survival rifle is appealing, and Savage hasn’t forgotten that. Their current over and under combo rifle is the Model 42.

No News is the Expected News as Carry Comes to WV Colleges
Concealed carry permit holders may now possess firearms on West Virginia public college and university campuses following implementation of the Campus Self-Defense Act. The act went into effect July 1. The bill began moving through the legislature in 2023, now joining 11 other states that have passed similar laws.
The new law allows institutions to implement exceptions, such as restricting the carrying of firearms in areas where mental health services are provided and locations where faculty or student disciplinary proceedings are taking place.

Freedom Gets A Boost In California Nonresident Carry Case
A federal judge has granted a preliminary injunction in the case challenging California’s ban on nonresident carry of firearms, thanks largely to the 2022 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen.
According to the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF), U.S. District Court Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California granted in part and denied in part the plaintiffs’ motion for preliminary injunction in the case California Rifle & Pistol Association v.

Guns We Love – Astra Constable
The Walther PP and PPK have reached legendary status. When people say Walther, most people will picture a PP variant. In reality, there was nothing superbly revolutionary about the PP series. These were high-quality firearms that were sleek, slim and good-looking. They are also the guns of James Bond. They remain in production with Walther. That level of popularity led to a ton of clones. Clones from Mauser, Bersa, and a company called Astra. Well, the Astra Constable isn’t necessarily a clone but a Spanish adaption of the Walther pistols.

FPC Sets Maine Governor Straight On Freedom Of Speech
A squabble between the Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC) and Maine Gov. Janet Mills is growing increasingly strange.
The battle stems from a video in which Gov. Mills told a liberal reporter that she was considering a ban on popular semi-automatic rifles as a response to last October’s mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine, which killed 18 innocent people. FPC, a pro-freedom organization specializing in fighting unjust, unconstitutional laws in the courtroom, responded to the video.

Safe Firearms Storage is Everyone’s Responsibility
While details of the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump and ensuing investigation continue to trickle out through the media, news on the actions and possible motivations of the shooter remain scarce. Initial reports indicate the AR-style rifle the 20-year-old gunman used was one that his father had legally purchased in 2013 from a gun shop that is now out of business. The suspect, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was still living with his parents in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, just over an hour away from the scene of the attack in Butler, Pennsylvania.

GOP Talks Guns At USCCA Gathering In Milwaukee
While the Republican Party has taken most of the references to firearms out of its official Party Platform, a meeting hosted by the U.S. Concealed Carry Association (USCCA) at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Tuesday leaves little doubt that the GOP remains steadfastly pro-Second Amendment.
During his tenure in office, former President Trump was a staunch defender of gun rights, with a few exceptions like the recently overturned bump stock ban.

So, What’s Up With The Failed Assassin’s Demolition Ranch Shirt?
You know it’s going to be a bad day when you find out a failed assassin was wearing a shirt with your YouTube channel name on it. But that’s exactly what happened to Matt Carriker, founder of Demolition Ranch, a popular YouTube channel for gun enthusiasts that has more than 11 million subscribers.
Thomas Matthew Crooks, the would-be assassin that was killed by Secret Service snipers after shooting former President Donald Trump in the ear at a Pennsylvania rally on Saturday, was wearing a Demolition Ranch shirt at the time of the failed assassination attempt.
Gun Groups Support Trump’s Choice for VP
Following Donald Trump’s announcement this week in choosing one-time critic J.D. Vance as his vice presidential nominee and Vance’s own speech at the Republican National Convention last night, while some serious Trumpers may still have their doubts, Vance’s record has for now won the support of some of our country’s biggest gun rights organizations. Here is what they are saying:
From NRA-ILA:
Following President Donald J. Trump’s announcement of his selection of U.S.

YouTube Sets Sights On Hickok45 Videos
Retired English teacher Greg Kinman has one of the most popular firearm-related YouTube channels in the world with more than 7.5 million subscribers. If that surprises you, it’s likely because you know Kinman as Hickok45, one of the hottest figures in the shooting sports since Annie Oakley.
On Tuesday, Kinman, joined on video by his son and business associate John, announced that a new YouTube policy is making up to 95 percent of Hickok45 videos inaccessible to his fans.

Andddd There He Goes: Biden Wastes No Time to Attack ARs
So, when Democrats and Republicans alike all called for a softening to the hate and vitriol used in the run up to the current election following the assassination attempt on Donald Trump, we wondered how long it might be before it was again politics as usual. Looks like for Joe Biden, who just days before the assassination attempt, urged his fellow Dems that “it’s time to put Trump in a bullseye,” it took less than three days.

Media: Stop Calling Idiot Shooters “Snipers”
In the aftermath of the attempted assassination of Trump, one thing happened that didn’t surprise me at all: people calling the shooter a “sniper.” There was also plenty of other dumb stuff said by “experts” on social media and in the media, as usual, like saying that an AR-15 is especially deadly at long range, that it takes special training to handle the round and that Eagle Scout is an elite paramilitary group.
Yes, I stole that last one from a movie, but you have to admit that it’s an equally dumb statement that would have fit right in.

S&W Announces the .380 ACP Bodyguard 2.0
The engineers at Smith & Wesson have apparently been busy this year, as evidenced by their flurry of mid-year new product drops. The latest is the .380 ACP Bodyguard 2.0. The original Bodyguard was released back in 2010 and was similar in size and capacity to the Ruger LCP. The new Bodyguard 2.0 looks to be a whole different creature with a different frame and slide design and a double-stack magazine accommodating 10- or 12-round magazines.

Convicted Rust Armorer Asks For New Trial
Following last week’s dismissal of manslaughter charges against actor Alec Baldwin in the shooting death of the cinematographer on the set of the movie Rust, the movie’s armorer, who is currently in prison, is asking for a new trial.
On Tuesday, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed filed an expedited motion for a new trial or dismissal of the charges in the killing of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. In March, Gutierrez-Reed was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in Hutchins’ death and sentenced to 18 months in prison.

Louisiana AG Shoots Down New Orleans Illegal Gun-Free Zone
After meeting last week with Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill, New Orleans officials quietly removed the 1,000-foot gun-free zone they had established illegally smack dab in the middle of the city’s popular French Quarter.
“I had a productive meeting with NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick and District Attorney Jason Williams, and Councilwoman Helena Moreno on Thursday in which I shared my concerns. They are working on a solution that would comply with the law,” Murrill said in a short statement following the meeting.

8th Circuit Court Rules Minnesota 18-20 Carry Ban Unconstitutional
We’ve reported several times over the past year how 18- to 20-year-old gun owners in many states are denied their Second Amendment rights despite being considered “adults” for other constitutionally protected freedoms. It’s a travesty, and many such laws have been taken to court.
The tide is turning, however. On Tuesday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit saw things our way, ruling that a Minnesota law banning 18-, 19- and 20-year-olds from carrying a concealed firearm is unconstitutional under the Second Amendment.
Infinite Defense: Self-Healing Infinity Target Review
In the world of shooting targets there’s no shortage of options. Paper targets are great for zeroing, with some offering a little reactivity as well. Steel targets are fantastic for shooter response, but mostly gives hit/miss response with little chance for after action diagnosis and can be a safety hazard at short range. Infinite Defense is producing a line of reactive rubber targets that advertise a shockingly long lifespan. Do the Infinity Targets hold up as promised?

Gun Review: Springfield Armory’s SA16-A2—The M16A2 All Over Again?
The M16 was as iconic a military weapon as there ever was. When introduced in its original version in 1965, it was a game-changer. We went from the M14’s 30-caliber round to a much smaller .22-caliber round. Some loved it, some didn’t. The rifle was new and basically untried; in some ways, it didn’t perform. But the powers that be worked on it and brought out the A1 and A2 versions, which increased reliability. To this day, it is a rifle that provokes discussion wherever such things are talked about.
Hawaii Working to Write the Second Amendment Out of the Island State
Hawaii might be the picture of paradise with swaying palm trees and sugar-sand beaches. Beyond the postcard-worthy landscapes, though, there’s a troubling trend by state officials to write Second Amendment freedoms out of the island state. In Hawaii, lawmakers are taking the approach that Second Amendment rights are a problem to be tamped down and not a freedom to celebrate.
It’s almost as if Hawaiian lawmakers are working to re-establish a kingdom in the island state, one where the U.S.
