Well I’ll Be a Fudd: The Orange Nation, Carry Connoisseurs and Tactical Bros Are All In on Conservation Together

Wed, 01/31/2024 - 08:00

As a lifelong hunter, former employee of the NRA (and still a member despite their current challenges), diehard 2A supporter, concealed carry permit holder and author of a book on AR-15s, and now editor of TTAG, I simply have to laugh at some of the arguments I see on hunting and gun message boards as well as sometimes in our own comments section baring all the animosity between hardcore gun guys and longtime hunters.

FN Announces the 509 CC Edge XL and 509 MRD Full-Size Pistols

Tue, 01/30/2024 - 16:00

FN just dropped two new pistols and they’re full, duty-sized guns. Compacts are great for concealed carry, but if you don’t need a compact firearm, perhaps for home defense or to keep in your vehicle when traveling, or you don’t mind toting a larger gun on your side, then a full-sized pistol has a lot to offer. It generally is easier to shoot with its larger grip and extra weight to keep recoil down. It also tends to have a longer barrel resulting in more velocity and a a longer sight radius, both of which can enhance accuracy.

In This Week’s WTF News: Mexico Lawsuit Against Gun Makers Greenlighted by U.S. Court

Tue, 01/30/2024 - 14:00

It has to be one of the most clearly biased rulings by a court in recent history. Reuters last week reported the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, based out of Boston, overturned a lower court’s motion to dismiss a lawsuit by Mexico against U.S. firearms manufacturers. The lower court had dismissed the lawuit because it said it violates the federal Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA). Mexico is seeking $10 billion in damages from U.S.

South Dakota Lawmakers Push To Protect Gun Owner’s Rights

Tue, 01/30/2024 - 12:00

While gun owners in many states face a legislature hostile to their rights, pro-freedom lawmakers in South Dakota are pushing to protect gun owners’ rights in the Mount Rushmore State.

In the past week, lawmakers have passed two pro-gun bills—House Bill 1035 and Senate Bill 39—and the measures now go to Republican Gov. Kristi Noem for her consideration.

House Bill 1035, introduced by Rep. Kevin Jensen, extends the renewal period for those holding enhanced carry permits.

Video Of A Shooting In My Neighborhood Shows The Value Of Mindset

Tue, 01/30/2024 - 10:00

A few months ago, I took the dogs out to pee at oh dark thirty as I often do. In the middle of wishing they’d hurry up and pee, I heard several gunshots in the distance. That might alarm somebody from a nice place, but in New Mexico, it’s almost completely normal. I figured the shots were around a half mile away, so I didn’t worry about it too much. But, in the following weeks, I learned a lot more about what happened.

Maryland Bill Would Force Gun Owners Who Carry to be Insured

Tue, 01/30/2024 - 08:00

As if Maryland didn’t already suck enough as a place to live if you’re a gun owner, it looks like Delegate Terri Hill (you guessed it, a Democrat, from of all places, crime-riddled Howard County) wants to make it even worse for her constituents who only want to protect themselves. According to Fox News, Hill has proposed a bill that would require gun owners who wish to secure a concealed carry permit, to also buy at least $300,000 in liability insurance in order to do so.

Mon, 01/29/2024 - 18:00

The 46th Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade Show (SHOT Show), owned and operated by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), concluded last Friday, Jan. 26, and by all measures was deemed a resounding success. This year’s show set new benchmarks for industry engagement with an expanded show floor, a record-high number of exhibitors and an array of new features and networking opportunities. NSSF reports the 2024 SHOT Show was the largest to date.

More than 55,400 industry professionals packed the 13.9 miles of aisles over four days at The Venetian Expo and Caesars Forum, eager to view new, innovative products used for target shooting, hunting, outdoor recreation and law enforcement.

Dressed to Kill: 5.11 Tactical’s New Blazer Redefines Carry Style

Mon, 01/29/2024 - 14:00

One thing I have come to recognize over the years is gun owners, and more specifically people who carry guns for self-defense, come in all shapes and sizes and certainly hail from all walks of life. Let’s face it, not all of us care to rock the 80s dad fanny pack nor does every occasion call for donning today’s ever-popular tactical pants with their 27 utility pockets. It’s not necessary to always look like you’re about to teach a firearms class.

How Should Gun Owners Respond To The Threat Of “The United States vs Itself”?

Mon, 01/29/2024 - 12:00

There’s no shortage of doom and gloom to be found online. Every election year since at least 2008, there have been people who stoke fear of a coming civil war. Obama was going to take everything over, enact martial law and kick off the apocalypse. Again, in 2012, we were told that unless Mitt Romney won, Obama would kick his plans for tyranny into high gear because he wasn’t facing another election. Again, in 2016, similar predictions were made about both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.

States Move to Protect Gun Owners’ Credit Card Data Privacy

Mon, 01/29/2024 - 09:35

In response to the International Organization for Standardization approving a Merchant Category Code (MCC) for firearms retailers a little over a year ago, pro-gun lawmakers in three states are currently pushing forward legislation to protect the credit card data privacy of gun owners.

MCCs are used by payment processors (like Visa and Mastercard) and other financial services companies to categorize transactions. Prior to the creation of the specific code for guns, firearms retailers fell under the MCC for sporting goods stores or miscellaneous retail.

Two Videos Show Us How NOT To Deal With Shoplifters

Mon, 01/29/2024 - 08:11

Watching videos of robberies in California can be pretty depressing. Not only do we see a breakdown of the economy and the rule of law happening, but it just sucks to see value being taken from people who earned it (shareholders and/or people who pay insurance premiums) to people who didn’t. It’s unfair, it stinks and the people who do it seem to think society owes them luxury items like computers and phones.

But, sometimes I’m a little shocked at the comments I see on the interwebs.

How The FN P90 Became A Staple Of Science Fiction

Sun, 01/28/2024 - 14:00

When it comes to weird-looking guns, few can beat FN’s P90 bullpup. Most rifles and personal defense weapons have a fairly traditional layout: magazine up front, grip behind that, with the stock bringing up the rear. The P90 not only departs from that in just about every way possible, but it just looks like something an alien would carry (assuming they can’t shoot lasers out of their eyes or something).

But, the P90 isn’t the only weird gun out there.

SHOT Show 2024: Angstadt Arms Vanquish Suppressor

Sun, 01/28/2024 - 12:02

I was baffled by the baffleless suppressor that’s currently being produced by Angstadt Arms. Okay, I’ll admit that’s not my joke, but the guy at the Angstadt Arms booth hit me with it. The Vanquish did seem somewhat confusing to me. I’m no suppressor expert, but I thought baffles were kind of a requirement.

Luckily, the folks at Angstadt Arms were willing to explain it to me, maybe more than once.

SHOT Show 2024: CZ Releases A Rimfire Scorpion

Sun, 01/28/2024 - 10:00

I’m a big fan of the Scorpion platform. It’s the right combination of an effective firearm, a clean and aggressive aesthetic and it’s a fairly affordable firearm. I own three of them, and I’m betting I’ll be owning a fourth by the end of this year. CZ has combined the CZ Scorpion that I love with the affordable rimfire .22 LR. My first impression of the rimfire Scorpion exceeded my expectations.

The Rimfire Scorpion – A Stealthy One

Typically, when we see a rimfire version of a popular firearm, it looks kind of chitzy and cheap.

28 Pro-Freedom Attorneys General Push Back Against Stopping Civilian Sales of Surplus Lake City 5.56 Ammo

Sun, 01/28/2024 - 08:00

A couple of weeks ago, about 20 anti-freedom state attorneys general led by Letitia James from New York petitioned Joe Biden’s administration to stop the sales of surplus 5.56mm ammo from the Lake City Army Ammunition plant.  Each of those statist AG’s tried to score virtue signaling points with their hard-left constituents with the political stunt.  Not a single one of these AGs target gang violence, but rather save their anger and direct it toward law-abiding gun owners, blaming guns for the actions of violent criminals.

SHOT Show 2024: Lionheart Vulcan Lineup

Sat, 01/27/2024 - 12:00

I’ve never shot a Lionheart pistol, but lots of people I know really enjoy those firearms. After hearing how great they are for the umpteenth time, I marched down to their booth at SHOT and started peeking around. It turns out Lionheart had an entirely new handgun named the Vulcan coming out. It admittedly has nothing to do with Spock.

SHOT Show 2024: KelTec and Farrow Tech Make an MP7 (kind of)

Sat, 01/27/2024 - 10:00

KelTec always has something creative up its sleeve. As much as people often want to hate on the Florida-based company, you can’t say they make boring guns. As a fellow Florida man, I can’t help but think it’s something in our drinking water that makes their weapons so appealing to me. This year, we saw two MP7-like weapons, one from Tommy Tactical and another from PSA, but you might have missed the MP7 we have at home that was chilling at the KelTec booth.

Brady Campaign Gone From Promoting Gun Control Legislation To Complaining About a Video Game Release

Sat, 01/27/2024 - 08:00

Back in the day, the Brady Campaign’s predecessor organization used to be the most powerful force in promoting compulsory victim disarmament. Originally known as the Coalition to Ban Handguns, then Handgun Control, Inc., and then the Brady Campaign for Gun Violence, it’s repeatedly rebranded itself as it has struggled for relevancy.

Back when they were flush with money from dark money orgs, they used to lobby for gun control legislation both at the state and national levels.

Shooting in Las Vegas Shows The Peril of Disputes with Neighbors

Fri, 01/26/2024 - 16:00

On December 29th, a man was fatally shot by his neighbor in Las Vegas, Nevada, after a long dispute that started with an animal complaint. Now, new details are out in a lawsuit filed by the man’s surviving family, including his wife who was shot in the leg.

It’s important to note that details are still very sparse, and we’re only getting one side of the story here. The woman who shot the man did the smart thing and refused to talk to police and asked for a lawyer.

Nebraska Considering Stand-Your-Ground Law

Fri, 01/26/2024 - 14:00

Cornhusker State lawmakers are seeking to expand self-defense rights by introducing a Stand-Your-Ground measure last week.

The measure, Legislative Bill 1269, was introduced on Jan. 17 by Republican state Sen. Brian Hardin with 14 co-sponsors for the measure. While Nebraska law currently recognizes the right of citizens to defend themselves with a firearm at home or on the job, according to Sen. Hardin, Nebraskans “have a duty to retreat” if threatened in a motor vehicle or anywhere else in public.
