Photo: Hauling Elk Home in a Car Trunk

Wed, 11/16/2016 - 17:01

Well, that’s one way to do it.

I have an uncle who has never owned a pickup truck, although he was an avid hunter of deer and other big game for decades.

He has hauled big game on and in station wagons, a Suburban (rarely), a Chevy Citation, a small Saturn sedan, and various other cars. And in every case, he managed to do it an, um, cleaner manner than this.

But hey, whatever does the job, right? The worst I can say about this photo is that it makes me a tad jealous, since my only elk hunt didn’t work out well for me.

What do you think? Sound off with a comment below.

Watch: Glock Fishing for Lionfish

Wed, 11/16/2016 - 17:01

This is cool. But turn off the sound before you play the video.

Using a pistol to slay fish is pretty awesome. And slaying lionfish–an edible invasive species that multiplies quickly, devours native fish, and has few if any natural predators–is always a great idea.

This video demonstrates the effectiveness of using a handgun with an adapter to kill these fish, which are then gathered up, taken home, and eaten.

Lead-free ammo is used, and the hunters/fishermen lure the fish away from reefs so their bullets don’t damage the coral.

Very nice.

The Rut is Rocking — Buck Making Scrape

Mon, 11/14/2016 - 16:47

Cool autumn weather is turning on whitetail deer throughout much of the country, as bucks are making scrapes, seeking does, and about to square off to other bucks crowding in on their territory.

Gun Shot Wound, Self Inflected, Viewers Beware

Fri, 10/21/2016 - 09:27

Firearms use requires great responsibility. One careless mistake can cause irreparable harm and injury, which is show here by a veteran gun owner and shooter, who had a short lapse in safety precaution and paid a huge and painful penalty.

Team Bowfishing for Sting Rays

Tue, 10/18/2016 - 08:42

By Bob McNally

Bowfishing in saltwater is a fun and target-rich environment, and sting rays are one of the most popular fish that can be taken in the Sunshine State.

Rays are not easy to hit with an arrow, and they are good table fare, too, tasting a bit like scallops once they’ve been skinned, cut into portions, and fried.

Here’s a short video on the wild fun archers have chasing sting rays in clear water.

Night Lights Shine for Autumn Fish

Tue, 09/20/2016 - 17:19

Autumn baitfish and on the move, massing and preparing for winter. Gamefish populations in saltwater and freshwater are taking advantage of the “push” of bait. But it’s still hot and warm in much of America, and this makes for some unusually good night fishing around lights that shine down into the water.

Lights around docks, bridges, marinas, even roadways near water all can be superb places where gamefish concentrate and waylay baitfish schools.

Here’s a video showing how schools of sportfish can hover around lights, offering anglers some of the best fishing of the year.

Video: Sniper Dog Targets the Wrong Squirrel

Spoiler alert: This is not a serious video. But it IS funny.

Not sure what else I can say without giving it away… so, just sit back and enjoy.

Watch: Swiss Müller 1895 7.5mm Curved-Recoil Pistol

Thu, 09/01/2016 - 17:00

Another interesting old gun, this apparently experimental pistol by D. Müller of Zurich, Switzerland is pretty impressive. The bolt is curved, and when a round is fired, it rotates back into the grip of the gun, cocking the hammer and allowing a round to feed from the magazine — if the magazine guts were in place, which they are not.

The hammer — and most everything else, for that matter — is pretty massive on this 1895 popper, which seems to be chambered for 7.5mm ammo.

It’s definitely a solidly-built old piece, and the way the bolt works is sort of intriguing.

Video: Bottle + Coat Hanger = Humane Mouse Trap

Mon, 08/29/2016 - 10:05

This is a pretty neat little homemade trap, in case you don’t have the heart to kill a mouse.

Personally, I don’t have any use for “humane” mouse traps because when you turn them loose they’ll still be pests. But some folks think differently.

And in a survival situation, you might need to keep mice alive as a source of fresh protein, but let’s REALLY hope it doesn’t come to that!

Anyhow, it’s an interesting, simple idea that seems to work.

“Feathering” Staging Areas for Game Near Food Plots

Wed, 08/24/2016 - 20:54

Staging areas designed and maintained around wildlife food plots are important for landowners and hunters to improve success of supplemental food sources for game. Brandon Bobo, a senior wildlife biologist with the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) explains how, where, and when to do this.

This type of food plot management is important in making sites attractive to all game, especially whitetail deer. But “feathering” areas around plots also makes them more suitable for a host of game, including bobwhite quail, doves, pheasants, even grouse.

Hunter Finds a Collection of Skulls in the Boonies

Mon, 08/22/2016 - 17:39

If you spend enough time in the woods, especially if you are alone, there will be times when you become freaked out. I’m talking about those moments when all your hairs stand on end, your adrenaline levels suddenly go so high that it starts to ooze out your ears, and you NEED TO HAVE eyes in the back of your head.

That’s how it was for the Australian hunter who came across this collection of skulls out in the middle of nowhere, which he recently posted on Facebook.

Freaky? Well, yeah. But at least it wasn’t accompanied by a bone-chilling screech just as night was coming on, like the one that almost ruined me years ago. That experience gave me the heebiest of jeebies!

What kinds of eerie situations have you survived in the great outdoors?

Watch: Convert an Angle Grinder Into a Chainsaw

Fri, 08/12/2016 - 19:55

Tired of stubborn gasoline chainsaws? Have a lot of time on your hands, plus access to a nice machine shop? Well then you, too, can turn an angle grinder into a safe and functional electric chainsaw.

What’s that you ask? Why not just get an electric chainsaw, which actually oils the chain automagically and is already built? Pshaw! Have you no imagination or sense of adventure?

But seriously, this is a fairly simple build and the result is a pretty cool attachment that does the job.

Video: Bowfishing With Bad Ass Slingshots Slingbow

Fri, 08/12/2016 - 19:55

Er… a slingbow? Hey, why not? But it seems like they changed their name somewhere along the way. They used to call the company Bad Ass Slingshots.

It’s pretty much a slingshot with a whisker biscuit arrow rest, adjustable for ambidextrous use, with a drilled and tapped hole in front for stabilizer, fishing reel, etc.

It looks pretty slick for bow fishing and is certainly much more compact than a bow.

Check it out:

Watch: Thermal Camera Captured Pistol Firing

Tue, 08/02/2016 - 21:02

Here’s another one that I find cool and interesting but don’t know much about. This animated gif produced with the use of a thermal camera shows a semi-automatic pistol bring fired.

One of the coolest things is how, when the empty brass cartridge case is ejected, the head (or rear) of it almost looks like a hollow-point bullet simply because the thicker brass there isn’t so hot, but the primer sure is.

Also check out the sparks flying out of the ejection port. Cool.

Video: 50 BMG (and Other Calibers) vs. Bulletproof Glass

Tue, 08/02/2016 - 21:01

Our old pal at Demolition Ranch got his hands on some bulletproof glass, which he put to the test, using multiple calibers from 380 ACP right on up to 50 BMG. And to me, the results were pretty impressive.

I don’t want to give anything away, so I’m not going to. Suffice it to say that even if you feel this video is a bit on the humdrum side, hang in there. It gets better.

Oh, and many thanks to the viewer who sent in that last round. I’d never seen a hunk of glass dance a pirouette while trailing a plume of smoke before.

Common Concealed Carry Mistakes

Mon, 08/01/2016 - 20:42

This article seems well worth sharing here. It covers some common errors made by folks who carry concealed firearms for self defense, as many of us do.

It actually makes a good bit of sense and is well worth the few minutes it takes to read. Topics covered include allowing your gun to be exposed, not staying properly trained, adjusting your piece in public, wearing appropriate clothing, carrying only every now and then, and more.

Read it, mull it over, and comment below to let us know what you think.

Watch: How to Make a Spring Pole Fishing Rig for Survival

Mon, 06/13/2016 - 17:51

In a survival situation, food is important. Fishing can be a great way to feed yourself, but if you spend all your time hunkered on the shore how will you find or build shelter, purify water for drinking, gather firewood, etc?

This video shows how to rig up a fishing pole so that when a fish tugs at the line, it triggers your setup, which yanks on the line to set the hook.

Pretty cool.
