Century Arms C39V2 AK-47: 100% American Made Perfection
I reviewed the first Century International Arms American made C39 Centurion rifle when it was first introduced and I loved it. That same C39 has been the base for many upgrades and reviews, and along the way has been a perfectly reliable AK47. That first C39 was well made, but it still did not “look” like a pretty high-end AK47.
...Smith Model 58: A Collector Behemoth
The .41 Magnum is a bit of an anomaly. It was introduced in 1964 squeezed in between the .357 Magnum and the .44 Magnum. Some might have wondered then and even now what it was really created to do. It was never never wildly popular, and that’s a shame, because the .41 is a grand balance between the other two powerhouses and is a sheer joy to shoot.
...Inlet Safety Tips: Coastal Boaters Beware
With the recent story of two missing young boating anglers in southeast Florida, it seems appropriate to offer tips on running tidewater inlets, of which there are hundreds throughout America.
...Bump a Stump for Summer Bass
Fishing is tough when it is 100 degrees with a humidity to match. Most anglers with any sense are probably at the house hugging the recliner in the cool air watching golf or NASCAR. If summer fishing is in the blood though, some good bass can still be snagged early in the morning and late in the afternoon before or after the blaring sun pitches high in the sky.
...One to Watch: Muyshondt Aeon Mk. III
It seems silly to bond with a tool. But gear guys and gals know that this definitely happens. Over time you know what it can do, how it works, and you come to rely on it. Its your ready companion. You can tell, just by weight, that you have that tool on you. Enrique Muyshondt, one of the best custom light makers in the world, produces these tools exclusively.
...If You Could Only Have One Knife
On the heels of the “only 5 guns” post comes the other most popular question on the gear Internet, the “only one knife” question. This question recently popped up on Reddit, and there’s also a relatively new video up on YouTube where British survival guru Michael “The Roach” Sanderson shows off his personal “one knife”.
...One to Watch: Smock Knives SK23
We all know the pattern by now. Guy starts out collecting knives, then he busts out a Dremel and modifies one he owns, he throws it up on a forum, gets some praise, and then people starting asking him to mod their knives. From there he creates as small side business modding production knives. The business grows until he is at capacity with orders. Then he realizes that he is doing all of the work of MAKING a knife but getting paid much less than he would if he was selling his own, handmade designs. Spurred by that economic logic, the guy slowly works on his own design until one day he debuts it to the public. Sometimes there are cheers, other times curious stares.
...50 Critters to Avoid this Summer, Part 2 of 5
It’s summer and American sportsman are out and about in big numbers. With so many millions of people covering lakes and rivers, tidewaters and oceans, hills and dales, mountains and valleys, accidental encounters with beasts big and small are sure to occur.
...For Handgun Shooting, Get a Grip
What criterion do you use to purchase a new handgun especially a concealed weapon? Is it by overall size of the firearm, the caliber, the barrel length, magazine capacity or what? Do you have a ranking system you use to make the best final decision for the “right” gun to buy?
...If You Could Only Have 5 Guns
I wouldn’t call it a meme or an ice bucket challenge thing exactly, but there’s a spate of “if you could only have five guns for the apocalypse” articles going around right now. It looks like it started with the Iraqveteran8888 video below, about selecting five guns for a “Red Dawn” scenario, then spread to Guns.com.
...Rockstead KON: A $3,000 Production Knife that Cuts and Cuts and Cuts
The other day I had the temerity to reveal that a $4,000 1911 is just not an item that exists anywhere on my personal gear wish list. I didn’t say that people who buy such a gun are crazy (thought I did say that anyone who carries such a gun for self-defense is nuts–please read the original post before responding to this point in the comments). All I said was that kilobuck 1911’s aren’t my flavor of man-bling. Of course, some people went ballistic, which is to be expected when one questions JMB’s creation, but that’s ok, because I have thick skin from many years spent writing things on the Internet.
...Build a Minimalist SHTF Cook Kit
If you had to “throw” together a quick, down-and-dirty and out-the-door SHTF cook kit, what would you put into it? I am talking bare minimum here to get you by in the very short haul. This may mean just a day or two in travel from your primary home to a Bug Out location or perhaps maybe even an in-between stop or two on the side of the road or a rest area.
...Catching On at Lake Calcasieu
Lake Calcasieu, Louisiana has always been a light-tackle saltwater fishing Mecca, located just inland from the Gulf of Mexico west of New Orleans and about 20 miles east of the Texas border. It’s 8 miles wide, 21 miles long, mainly shallow, somewhat off the beaten track, and it has some of the best, most reliable spotted seatrout, red drum and flounder fishing in America.
...A Good Vehicle Gun Hides Within Reach
Gun concealment inside a vehicle is essential at times. If you travel a good bit, especially in areas of town that are not particularly safe, then it may be a regular practice for you to keep a loaded gun in the vehicle. Having that firearm in a regular waist holster may not always be the best choice. Let’s take a look at some other considerations.
...The Case for a Ruger American Rifle in 7.62x54R
From Michael Bane comes a bit of prepper advice that I mostly agree with, but with an important qualification.
...Knife Review: Mora Companion
Its taken me a long time to get to this point, but I think I can finally write an objective-ish review of a Mora knife. I have now had experience with two–the Companion, which is the subject of this review, and the Pathfinder.
...SHTF Backpacks with too many Pockets
I know of many preppers that are proud as punch of their multi-pocketed Bug Out packs. That is until they try to find something in one of the many zippered or Velcro® hidey places some of these humongous packs have designed into them. Sometimes too many pockets, pouches, and slip sleeves can create efficiency problems during a SHTF.
...Harbor Freight Prepping
What if you could go to a single source outlet for a great deal of your prepping equipment and supply needs? It can definitely a hassle to shop numerous shops, stores, and outlets to find everything you need or want for your SHTF prepping and/or a formal Bug Out plan. It is nice to have just a few places to go where much of the gear and stuff you need can be bought at one place. This place could be Harbor Freight.
...Hunting Dogs: Working Out With Man’s Best Friend
Summer heat puts a special burden on some gun dog owners who want their pups in shape for early hunting, like doves. It’s so hot that only in early mornings can working dogs be exercised, unless they head to water.
...High Fence Texas Elk Hunt: For or Against?
Have you been high fence hunting before? We found this video and couldn’t help but ask around to hear your thoughts on the subject.
