Remind me again how many flavors of ice cream there are at Baskin-Robbins? Looking at all those tubs of ice cream reminds me of checking out the well-stocked rifle racks at a big gun store for AR rifles. New peppers or survivalists getting into the gun game must be overwhelmed by all the choices, not to mention the toppings.

Wow, this is a new one on me – and I’ve been a student of the gun for most of my life.

Catch and release fishing… it’s good for the fish because it lets them grow up – and ensures there are plenty of them in the water. And it’s good for folks who fish, because fishing is such an enjoyable activity.

When a fisherman is first starting out, though, releasing one’s fish can be difficult…

In this video, a young angler casts like a champ and hooks a fish. When it comes time to release his catch though, he just can’t bear to take it off the hook. Even after his father unhooks it, he has a tough time grabbing the fish – but in the end he “mans up” and gets the job done. Bravo!

I can’t help but grin when I watch this.

Yes, I know… gasp, someone still likes a pistol that is not striker fired. I have owned and carried a wide variety of hammer fired pistols, including the H&K P30 line, Berettas, Smith & Wessons, Sig DOA 224SAS, and even some of the hybrid pistols like Walther PPX which “feel” like striker fired pistols even though they have most of the attributes of a hammer fired gun. I have grown to love these great pistols in a different way similar to the way I still regard revolvers.

When and if the next SHTF occurs, a preppers top priority besides food and water is going to be security. Top on that list of concerns is the protection and safety of your survival weapons. Trust me, during the hustle and bustle of a bug out or temporary relocation every piece of gear you haul with you is going to be subject to abuse, damage, and extra wear and tear. It is important to plan in advance to have protective cases to secure and guard your firearms.

Experienced dove hunters know dove decoys are deadly effective for attracting birds, and innovative models with moving wings are the most appealing of all dove decoys.

Sometimes too many choices can make things confusing. This seems to be the case with picking just the right concealed weapon holster carry. Carrying a concealed weapon on your person is serious business. Most people probably hope they never have to draw a pistol out in self-defense, but yet want to be able to do so effectively if the dire situation should arise.

Okay, this is pretty cool.

The USA’s National Park Service turns 99 tomorrow, and to celebrate they’re waiving the fees in a bunch of national parks and related sites such as national monuments. That’s August 25, 2015 – and yeah, that’s tomorrow. Not a ton of warning (and it IS a weekday), but there are two other fee-free dates left in 2015: September 26 (National Public Lands Day) and November 11 (Veterans Day).

It’s summer and American sportsman are out and about in big numbers. With so many millions of people covering lakes and rivers, tidewaters and oceans, hills and dales, mountains and valleys, accidental encounters with beasts big and small are sure to occur.

Wildlife food plots are a huge investment. Knowing this all hunters playing with the idea of becoming a mini-farmer are justifiably nervous about producing high quality food plots. After all there are a whole bunch of factors that can easily contribute to food plot failure and some of them are totally out of our control.

Muskie anglers should have a wide assortment of lures that enable them to properly work various types of water.  In the early season small bass-size diving plugs like the “Hellbender” and original “Bomber” are excellent.  But from mid-summer to late-autumn, large spinner-baits, giant bucktail spinners, big diving plugs and huge surface lures called “jerk baits” usually are most productive.

There’s a new target darting into America’s dove fields, and it looks as if it’s here to stay, much to the delight of many wingshooters.

Field and Stream guns writer David Petzal bought up an interesting issue recently. Are rifles that promise half-MOA groups at long ranges all that useful to most shooters or hunters? It is an issue that I have explored for several years. Today some rifles can shoot a tight group at 300, 500 or even more than 1000 yards, but so what?

The longer your hunting, fishing or camping gear sits up the worst condition it gets in. I learned this the real life way growing up in my dad’s flying business. During the off crop dusting season our three airplanes, countless pump engines, and all kinds of other gear sat idle and deteriorated in the hanger or storage buildings. It took a month to get everything back running in the spring.

It happened on Deer Lake, in Polk County, Wisconsin, while fishing with my good friend and bona fide muskie hound, Spence Petros of Chicago. Somehow the moon and the stars were properly aligned, and we were into muskies, big time. Schools of fish, in fact.

Stainless steel has become the go to materials for everything from stoves, kitchen outdoor appliances, automotive, architectural materials, throughout the firearms industry and pretty much everything in life… so many asked why there was not a stainless steel Desert Eagle amidst every other conceivable finish.

People are often misguided. They want good things: Safety, security, comfort. But they often ignore common sense in the pursuit of those things.

It’s no mystery that Hillary Clinton often acts as if she is above the law, and when accused will follow her hubby’s example of playing dumb. And when asked pointed questions, her responses (“What difference does it make?”) fall flat and fail to inspire confidence.
