The Way It Had to Be: A South Carolina Hog Hunt, Part Two
Click here to read part one of this story.
My mind was made up on swine after just a few pages into George Orwell’s Animal Farm. You know what they say about first impressions. I can’t remember the year I first read the book, which grade I was in, or the lovely teacher who required it. But I do know that I was quick to realize the deceitfulness and cunning ways of Snowball and Napoleon and paralleled those thoughts with reality. Yes, yes. I am now all too familiar with allegory. But in the mind of a...
Video: How to Hone a Knife with a Car Window
There are a lot of neat tips and tricks when it comes to keeping your tools in prime condition, but not all are exactly convenient. Take for example the fact that you can sharpen a knife using a coffee mug---if you bring a mug with you to the field, you might as well bring a dedicated sharpening tool. In the following video, Deer Meat for Dinner explains how you can use a car window to put an edge back on your knife.
Don't knock it until you've tried it. Depending on the roughness of your window's edge, it can easily...
Florida Angler Catches, Releases Rare Piebald Tarpon
Captain Clark Wright has been fishing for 20 years and runs Wrightstuff Charters out of Sarasota, Florida. But before June 5, he had never seen a piebald tarpon before. On that day, he helped George Seibel bring in a bright orange-spotted creature that looked more like a koi fish than a tarpon, which are normally silver with green or blue backs.
“The first time I saw the fish jump I could see it had bright orange marks all over its head. I said 'Man, that’s different,'” Wright told OutdoorHub.
Along with mate Matt Smithman, Wright and Seibel were fishing near the coast of Anna...
Isla Vista Killings Spur New Gun Bills in California
On Wednesday, California State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara) introduced two new gun-related bills that would change how law enforcement approaches mental illness and gun ownership. The first of the bills, SB 505, will require police officers to search through California's database of gun purchases and the Automated Firearms System when investigating people who may be a danger to themselves or others. The second, SB 580, will provide millions of dollars in additional funding for law enforcement to enforce existing gun laws.
“Both of these bills are about making better use...
Lawmakers Urge USDA to Halt Interstate Transport of Captive Deer
Last Friday, six members of the Congressional Animal Protection Caucus sent a letter to Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and leading US Department of Agriculture (USDA) officials, urging them to consider "immediate action" against the interstate transport of deer. In the letter, which was obtained by The Indianapolis Star, the lawmakers pointed to concerns...
Frugal Muskie Fishing
Paul Anderson is as resourceful as he is passionate about his favorite pastime: trolling for big muskellunge. I shared the boat with the Ohio Huskie Muskie Club president last week during the club’s annual outing when members offer to guide outdoor media professionals and the Ohio Division of Wildlife to promote the sport. Over the course of the day, I received instruction not only in muskie fishing but in finding ways to cut out-of-pocket-cost corners while pursuing what can be an expensive angling endeavor.
For example, Anderson eliminates the cost of installing a traditional...
Michigan Brown Trout on the Muskegon River
We’d been catching brown and rainbow trout in that seven- to 10-inch range (this year's stockers) steadily when something stopped my lure cold. There was no doubt that this wasn’t one of those; I could feel the bite all the way down to my elbow.
The fish came out of the water, head-shaking. It was a tall brown trout, what we in the trade call a “picture fish.” It came up a second time and threw the Rapala right at me.
“That was a 20-inch fish,” said Denny Bouwens, who was hosting this Muskegon River safari below Croton Dam.
Sigh. The big one always gets away.
Minutes...

Video: Jerry Miculek “Quick Scopes” a Grape in Half a Second
This is little doubt that Jerry Miculek loves his job and that always comes through in the enthusiasm he brings to the camera. Although the speed shooter is more well-known for his rapid-fire trigger finger, Jerry is also an impressive marksman and quick on target. Here he performs a feat familiar to Call of Duty fans: the "quick scope."

Changes for Alabama’s 2014 Alligator Hunting Season
Alabama residents who have participated in the state’s alligator hunting seasons in the past will find several changes for the 2014 season.
First, for the first eight years the season has been in existence, people could apply for an alligator tag as many times as they wanted as long as the application fee was paid each time.
This year, there will be only one application per person per zone allowed. Because the number of total applications will be reduced, Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries (WFF) had to raise the application fee to $22 ($20 application fee and $2 processing fee)...
Mobile App Aims to Make Archers More Accurate
Full Flight Technology, maker of the Velocitip electronic arrowpoint, has plans to build a mobile app for iPhones that will make sighting-in a new bow much easier and faster. The company recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise $25,000 for the project, which Full Flight Technology CEO Bob Donahoe calls the "UNO." The idea behind the app is simple: shoot the bow at a set distance, plug the bow's specs into the app, and set sight pins to match the positions the app shows.
"Today, sighting-in a bow...
