While you don’t have to be an accountant to be a retailer, it doesn’t hurt to have an understanding of some key financial tools. Here are some of the most important to keep in mind.

We have long known that the argument of gun control activists that 40 percent of gun sales in this country occur without a background check was bogus. Even the Washington Post zinged President Obama in 2013 for his frequent use of that ersatz stat, awarding three of four possible Pinocchio’s in a rating category that requires “significant factual error and/or obvious contradictions”.

The 13th Annual Firearms Import/Export Conference is under way with a comprehensive agenda designed to help ensure that members of the firearms, ammunition, hunting and shooting sports industry stay informed of and in compliance with the extensive federal laws and regulations governing the import and export of their products. The two-day conference is a joint presentation of the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and the FAIR Trade Group and is being held at the Renaissance Downtown, Washington, D.C.

In a move prompted by NSSF’s work with assistance from the NRA in getting the issue addressed by key members of Congress, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) last week reported that firearms retailers are no longer on a watch list of businesses deemed at higher risk for fraud.  The FDIC’s list was compiled as part of the Department of Justice’s “Operation Choke Point” and has now been withdrawn.

Last October, Pennsylvania resident Shaneen Allen was arrested in New Jersey after being pulled over for a minor traffic violation. When the police approached her vehicle, the single mother voluntarily disclosed that she had a gun in her vehicle and had been issued a concealed carry permit in her home state. Since Allen was in New Jersey, which has some of the strictest gun control laws in the country, and not Pennsylvania, she was arrested and spent 40 days in jail.
