Trapshooting growing in popularity in Minnesota schools

Thu, 06/11/2015 - 12:22

Jennifer Cruz for Guns.com reports:

The fastest growing sport among high schoolers in Minnesota isn’t necessarily a conventional sport and certainly doesn’t have the conventional rules of most high school sports, which quite possibly may be part of its appeal.

In 2008, there were only about 30 students across the entire state that were involved in sanctioned trapshooting competitions and even fewer teams, but seven years later, the sport has seen a massive increase, with now more than 200 teams statewide hosting some 8,600 students.

….And unlike other school sports, having the opportunity to be on the team isn’t dependent on your current skills. There are no tryouts and anyone can join the team. The only prerequisite is completing a Department of Natural Resources-sponsored gun safety course. From there, students are divided into different tiers, according to skill level.

….But while the sport has grown in leaps and bounds over the years, selling the idea to the school board initially wasn’t such an easy thing to do.

Thu, 06/11/2015 - 11:00

In a world in which schools suspend second graders for eating Pop Tarts into the shape of a gun, California Senate Bill 456 would create a dangerous new statutory vehicle for anti-gun school officials to attack firearms-related speech that are not “true threats.”

Guns.com: Gun lock laws proposed in New York, Delaware

Wed, 06/10/2015 - 18:41

Chris Eger for Guns.com reports:

With a Supreme Court challenge to mandatory gun lock laws rejected, cities and states are moving toward implementing similar requirements to lock or disable firearms not in use.

Proposed this week is a bill in the Delaware House of Representatives and an ordinance in front of the Albany Common Council in New York that would require gun owners to secure their firearms under penalty of law.

“Really, who I hope to address with this are those people who are now going out to go buy guns who are not part of the NRA, who have not gotten the training, but buy guns and forget that this is a really dangerous instrument and they really have to do everything they can to protect it and not just leave it on their table or leave it in their glove compartment,” said Delaware state Rep. Michael Barbieri, D-Newark, of his bill introduced Tuesday to the opposition of the National Rifle Association.

Armed robber stopped after store clerk open fires

Wed, 06/10/2015 - 11:37

Jennifer Cruz for Guns.com reports:

Attempted robberies just days apart at two different smoke shops in Houston left the clerks at both businesses firing back at the suspects, resulting in the death of one….

“They pulled in. They made a U-turn and they parked right there and he heard them yelling, ‘Go, go, go,’” the store owner, who did not want to be identified, told a local ABC affiliate.

Four suspects got out of an SUV wearing masks and carrying guns, but the clerk, a veteran who served in Afghanistan, was also toting a 9mm. One of the suspects aimed his gun at the clerk, and the clerk subsequently fired three shots, striking the suspect.

The injured suspect attempted to run away, but collapsed outside near the vehicle. The remaining three suspects got into the getaway car and sped away, leaving their injured comrade behind.

…The injured suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, and authorities are hoping that the images captured by the video surveillance system will help to identify the remaining suspects.

Wed, 06/10/2015 - 11:22

Paul Schankman for Fox KTVI reports:

A gun rights advocate from Ohio is threatening to lead an armed walk through the St. Louis Zoo to challenge its ‘no weapons’ policy.

The zoo has long had signs posted at several entrances letting people know to leave their weapons behind.

But when a security guard allegedly threatened to throw a visitor out over the Memorial Day weekend for simply carrying an empty holster into the zoo, some gun rights advocates decided to challenge to zoo`s policy.

The man leading the charge is Jeff Smith, 56, of Cincinnati. He is the same man who led an armed walk through Downtown St. Louis last fall.

NY Senate votes to tweak landmark gun law

Tue, 06/09/2015 - 10:29

The Associated Press reports:

The New York Senate has endorsed changes to the landmark gun control law passed in the wake of the 2012 elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

The revisions passed by the Senate Monday would allow a family member to inherit certain types of semi-automatic firearms when their owner dies and make pistol permit applications exempt from open records laws.

Monday’s Senate vote was 35-26. The legislation has little chance of passing the Assembly, which is controlled by Democrats.

Gun control laws emphased in Wisconsin Assembly

Tue, 06/09/2015 - 10:00

Andrew Hahn for the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports:

The state Assembly is expected to reload Wisconsin’s gun control laws Tuesday, taking up bills to repeal the state’s waiting period to purchase a handgun, increase minimum sentences for some gun-related crimes and allow licensed former cops to carry concealed firearms into schools.

The first bill would eliminate Wisconsin’s mandatory 48-hour waiting period to purchase a handgun, a law that Rep. Scott Allen (R-Waukesha), a lead sponsor of the repeal, said restricts the rights of gun owners without reducing gun violence.

Allen said a main reason Wisconsin enacted the waiting period was to accommodate the time that it once took to perform a background check. That can be done in minutes with today’s technology.

“The antiquated waiting period law simply creates an unnecessary burden on law-abiding citizens wishing to exercise their right to purchase a handgun,” Allen said.

NRA-ILA: Everytown loses big in Nevada

Mon, 06/08/2015 - 17:55

The NRA-ILA reports:

…On Monday, Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval signed Senate Bill 175, abolishing Clark County’s “blue card” handgun registration system while ushering in a host of other pro-gun changes to state law.

Michael Bloomberg’s anti-gun group, Everytown, tried hard to defeat the bill. The bill contains several provisions that expand and protect the right to carry and use firearms for self-defense. First, it extends Castle Doctrine protection to people who use firearms to defend themselves in their vehicles. Next, it provides greater protection against civil lawsuits, to those who use firearms to defend themselves against certain violent criminals. It also extends Right-to-Carry permit reciprocity to a greater number of states and strengthens state preemption of local gun control ordinances.

The Hill: Dems move to ban plastic guns

Mon, 06/08/2015 - 17:06

Tim Devaney for The Hill reports:

Congressional Democrats are proposing to ban plastic guns, following reports of major security lapses at the nation’s airports

Plastic guns can be even more dangerous than traditional firearms because they’re harder to detect, says Rep. Steve Israel (D-N.Y.).

The Undetectable Firearms Modernization Act, backed by Israel and several other Democrats, would prohibit the manufacture of entirely plastic guns. The legislation would require a major component of every gun to contain enough traces of metal to be detected.

Israel plans to unveil the legislation Tuesday during a press conference at LaGuardia Airport in New York City, where he will draw a connection between his bill and recent high-profile airport security lapses.

Breitbart: Rev. Michael Pfleger claims NRA ‘will pay for the murder’ of Chicago children

Mon, 06/08/2015 - 10:54

AWR Hawkins for Breitbart reports:

On June 6, Reverend Michael Pfleger listed recent shootings in heavily gun-controlled Chicago then said the NRA “will pay pay for the murder of our children.”

He was joined by Reverend Jesse Jackson and the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence president Dan Gross.

P[f]leger, Jackson, and Gross rallied outside of Chuck’s Gun Shop, where Jackson recently rallied for the ban of guns already banned in Chicago.

P[f]leger began his speech at the rally by pointing out that ten persons were shot and three were killed on the night of June 5 alone. He then said, “I’m not a gun grabber, I’m a life lover,” after which he pointed to Chuck’s Gun Shop and said, “And I love life more than the death that they are perpetrating.”

Sun, 06/07/2015 - 13:06

Hundreds of women gathered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial Saturday for their annual “Standing for Peace and Justice” rally.

They said they’re outraged by the gun violence in their communities and they demanded what they called “common sense solutions.”

There was a sea of faces in the crowd – photos of deceased loved ones held by mothers, grandmothers, sisters and widows. Most of these lives were lost to gun violence.

….Many of the rally’s participants represented anti-violence groups from across the country. Some were local, many were from the Philadelphia area and some traveled from as far as California to attend.
